I should mention I am a big fan of Carl Lohren's book **One Move to Better Golf** which talks about outside moveaways with the club while the left shoulder moves forward. He talks about many pro's that were premium strikers that did this ... Couples, Trevino, Nicklaus etc

Push down with the palm of your lead hand as you take the club back, feeling NO clubhead rotation at all. You're hinging without letting your right hand fold back. Do this while turning and the club shaft will feel very light on the way up.

I kind of picture a Rickie Fowler takeaway move when I hear this described. Not a perfect tactic, but I had a teacher suggest trying to point the face of the club at the ground going back while trying to put the handle of the club into your trail front pocket. Never ends up being like that, just a way to envision a feel that worked for me.

I personally got over the habit of rolling the club open and too the inside on the takeaway by doing this drill

Bringing this post back up again because of all the helpful material and videos here. I thought I could get away with my inside takeaway but it looks like Im going to have to make this change. My game is so inconsistent with the inside roll. I also discovered i am losing distance because of the face being wide open and adding loft. 

Starting now I will not be playing on the course for at least two months. Range sessions every weekend until I basically have a new swing. Going back to my old irons which are very forgiving (Ping Eye 2) to help with this. 

 

Despite being a 5 hcp, I am now realizing I never really learned the correct backswing. Back in 2000 when I started golf at age 16 there was little video analysis, no youtube, and I had limited access/ money for good instruction

It's weird how the wrong move (like rotating the forearms on the takeaway) comes to feel "right" over time and the new move (one-piece takeaway with a little wrist c0ck) feels so strange. Been unlearning this myself this season. 

 

One comment my pro made has helped me feel it more often. He said "imagine your trail elbow stays higher than your lead elbow on the way back, then your trail elbow gets lower than your lead elbow coming down."

you are correct, I played that way for 20 years without realized how bad this fault was. My takeaway felt fine, whip it to the inside, lift, use that lag on the way down and sent it out there 300 with mixed results. Played well some days, actually qualified for some events, but attributed my poor rounds to short game or mental woes but it turns out I was swinging incorrectly the whole time

I think that Malaska tear drop drill looks to be the exact OPPOSITE of how he usually teaches!
