Titleist 620 Sales - Not Much Buzz?

I tested a lot of irons yesterday and the ones that impressed me the most were the new irons from Titleist (MB,CB and T100) and Srixon (z-Forged).

Michael Newton the Youtube creator has a video of himself being fitted for new Titleist irons. I think he has signed a deal wth them. Anyway the video title makes it seem like he’ll either be going with 620 CB or MB (he ha another video where he tests the MBs) or a combo set but during the actual fitting he only hits CB and T100. At one point he asks the Titleist fitter what’s most popular on Tour and the guy says CB and T100.

So, if the MBs are an elite players iron yet the best players in the world aren’t using them, who the heck is going to buy them and why make them?

Justin Thomas is the highest ranked Titleist guy in the world and uses them. I’d say it’s fairly split between CB MB and T100 on tour.

Being pedantic, I am not sure that he has actually made the switch over and it still using the 718 MB. Given that they are still relatively new, I am not sure how the numbers are quite playing out but the AP2 was Titleist’s most played iron at Tour level so I would suspect that the T100 would take that crown.

I have sold one combo CB/MB set of the 620s. My opinion is that there is nothing wrong with these irons. I think that 2019 was just a banger year for equipment. Everyone put out a lot of really good stuff. Titleist is just putting these out really at the very end of the season and everyone has already set up there bags just a few months ago. These are great clubs, there are just too many good options this year. especially in the players iron/blade catagory.

You have the Mizuno JPX 919 tour and forged that have been selling like crazy, you have to cally apex forged, and pro irons that have sold really well, The blueprints, the wilson staff blades, the cobra king forged cb/mb irons, the Mizuno MP18s that were still awesome. Just too much good stuff.

The **620** numbering was confusing to me. Initially I thought someone was selling off a dozen Titleist sets from circa 2006 they found in the warehouse. Titleist marketing created confusion, not buzz.

Re mp20 comment.I think its accurate many on here have played various brands and like me will have Sentimental Value attached to some clubs .For me the 681s. The FG62 The MP37 and 33.Hogan BH grind.......so when a 620cb/mb comes along..we start smiling.I missed a chance to grab some 680mbs 3 years ago!

I recently had a fitting at our National Titleist Centre in Scotland, since when I have ordered a combo set of 5-7 T100 and 8-PW 620 CBs. Whilst these are probably half a club shorter than my previous irons - apex/apex pro 19 combos - I am super happy with the Titleist irons. Much better feel in my view, particularly for half shots and soft shots into the wind, really happy overall. And the T100s look much better than previous AP2s in my view, smaller but still more than sufficiently forgiving. I do agree the MP20s look stunning though too, and may well have stolen a march here. Play well all!

It's important for potential buyers to evaluate whether a new iron is influenced by cosmetics or internal design improvements and cosmetics. Experience has taught me OEM's can't afford to do a total redesign of every model every year, not fiscally prudent. Also, some irons are not meant for the masses so marketing isn't as penetrating, like 716CB's or the original 670MB's, which I loved.

Don't get hooked by effective marketing campaigns.

Currently, I play 716CBs. I didn't jump to 718's because I wanted to see if Titleist reacts to the market and reinvents them. For example, I used to play the original Titleist 670MBs, considered very challenging clubs. At the time only twenty tour players had them in the bag, Els was one. I recall Titleist redesigning them and reintroducing them. I also played the original Callaway X-Forged from 2006 to 2014ish, still love them. A year after introduction Callaway redesigned them to make them more forgiving, and reintroduced them with the same name. I didn't like the second iteration.
