Palm Springs Teaser continued for 2024 Golf Vacations

Recommended Posts

Played my last round at Escena, Bty day 86F little to no wind until got to #17.  Course wasn't all that busy, most of snowbirds have departed.  Paid $79.00 got out ahead of my 1:00 pm TT & finished in 4.5 hrs, scrambled more than necessary, came home with same ball, was fortunate to break 80.  The course is starting to show some wear & tear, the greens were still in good shape but not as quick as back in January.

Too hot to golf the next few days, going to lay low & enjoy the pool/heat before we pack up & drive back on April 14th.

Signed our rental contract, back in 2024.

Happy Easter .... cheers

D.

Well I’m sitting at the airport on the way home back to Canada and thought I’d share a few thoughts and photos about our quick trip down to the desert.

First I’d like to mention the rental car pick up and return is extremely easy and quick compared to the 10 or so airports I have been through while renting a vehicle. Original plan was to go car less and just Uber everywhere due to the short stay but we were quite happy with the rental choice.

Pete Dye mountain course

I am still unsure how I feel about this course. The staff was great and the started was hilarious. The range was a bit of a let down being irons only but it could be worse. Now to the course. I’d like to mention that target golf is not something that I enjoy all that much so that definitely swayed my feelings about the course. Conditions were great, but rock hard somewhat small greens on a target golf course made for a grind all day. I hit 13 greens and only 4 shots stayed on the surface. Iron play is the strongest part of my game and it didn’t seem to matter. I spin my irons quite a bit but that didn’t seem to help. Not my preferred style of course but the views and conditions were great. We were surprised to see we were finished in 4:10 when the round felt like it was close to 5 hours. We waited on every shot and our group and the group in front would end up on the box of every par 3 waiting. Pace was fine the flow was not. Here’s a couple of crappy photos from my old IPhone.

Next up was Desert Willow Firecliff

What a gem! I will try to add this course to every golf trip down here if possible. Conditions were great greens were quick and the range was excellent. Only downfall to the range was the chipping and putting area was a little small but not a big deal. What a great course, very much my style of desert golf. Some more crappy iPhone pictures for you.

We initially had a round booked at silver rock but decided to cancel and head to LA for the Jays vs Angels game on Saturday. All in all I had a great trip for our first time down and next time will definitely be longer with more golf.

PS Airport is one of my favorites.  Good choice on getting a rental car.  And...

The correct term is "Greens Visited."

Funny (depends on your humor type) story about PS Airport.  We were waiting in the departure terminal and after sitting around for a bit we went for a walk.  Came back 15 minutes later and next to where we were sitting we saw an item on the floor that wasn't there before.  I'll let you zoom in on the pic and figure it out.  How do you lose those???

Played Escena yesterday, today we went back to Shields Date Garden on Hwy 111 in Indio. They have a nice out door patio for breakfast/lunch and their $7.95 Date Shake was delicious ... a must visit while in Palm Springs.

A few pic's ..... enjoy.

Do they still show the movie “The romance and sex life of a date?” When I was a youngster I learned that some things don’t live up to the hype of advertising due to this very movie.

We actually went in to watch the show .... no free popcorn for gray hairs, surprised to see the theater could accommodate 100+ guests. Some of the old B&W pic's of the area were priceless. I learned something new about sex, and the 49-to-1 Palm Tree ratio.

Not sure I would want the pollinating position & climb up those tree ladders or the date picking job, either, guess that's why they charge the prices they do.

Met a neighbor at the pool today who works at the Classic Club, he said as an employee in the Customer Support (guys who work outdoors at front, cart barn, range), he said he can book me a sliding tee time next year for 4 players for $120.00 or $30.00 each CASH or 2 for $60.00 each, 3 for $40.00 or I play as a single & pay the $120.00, it doesn’t matter.

He said it’s the last TT of the day after everyone goes out. Said, it’s best to book through him when the time changes in March so you have a better chance of finishing.

Looked at the CC booking website, there’s no one playing after 11:20 tomorrow & the green fees are $165.00 each …. Don’t thing it would be too difficult to find 3 others guys who would be willing to play at the CC for $30.00.

Told him it sounds too good to be true, he said it’s an employee benefit & he gets to keep the cash. Good deal, hope he still works there next year when we return.

Thats pretty wimpy. Some of my best golf came when it was well over 100. Just gotta preload with a lot of water, cover up with sunscreen and drink throughout the round. When I was in my 30's my buddy and I used to play the old Canyon South course (now Indian Canyons) in August. We'd be one of the first ones to tee off, take a break and play another 18. Only one time did we play 54 and we both were pretty beat up. Of course I couldn't do that at this stage of my life. There was only one time I couldn't finish a round because of the heat. I may have mentioned it earlier but I got an invite to play Tamarisk CC which was very difficult to get on. We only lasted 8 holes before turning back.

Guess I'm getting old & wimpy, at 67 my back & the heat has wore me out the last few days. Can't imagine golfin when it's 128F.  Packing up some stuff for storage in our neighbors garage then it's time to load up the vehicle and head back to the great white north, the home course still has some snow cover.

Cheers

Can't imagine golfin when it's 128F.  Packing up some stuff for storage in our neighbors garage then it's time to load up the vehicle and head back to the great white north, the home course still has some snow cover.

Cheers

D.

I did qualify that by admitting I was younger. At 71 I'll still play when its hot but I won't walk if the forecast is over 90.

Next month I'll be headed to the west side of central Idaho for the summer. Hopefully this year it will be cooler than last year. I did live in B.C. for a couple of years in the 70's and while it was pretty cold and wet in the winter at times it got pretty hot in the summer. At 90 it seemed like 115 in Palm Springs.

Thank you for all of your local PS-area knowledge and reporting this past winter.

I'm planning on playing both courses at Indian Wells and both courses at Desert Willow next month for the first time as the rates will be down into my acceptable range... I will give my report then.

Hope you had a great time David although I know the weather wasn't very cooperative and you didn't get in as much golf as usual.

But new custom fit irons was a pretty nice way to fill in a few gaps in the playing schedule!

As always I greatly enjoyed your posts and photos as my memories of the desert are beginning to wane a bit after three years of missed visits.

Have a safe trip home and a great season this year.

Thanks all ... for the kind words/replies.

That big wind pushed us into Salt Lake City and never let up. This morning got to ride a tail wind from Utah into Idaho & into Montana. Arrived at Great Falls for the evening, going to cross the border in the morning, 1,630 miles/2,600 km, later home tomorrow afternoon.  Miss Palm Springs already ....

Anyone got any tips for a month long stay in the area starting in May? I'd like to find some sort of a short membership deal to play golf as much as I can.

If there's an area that's not exactly in Palm Springs you'd suggest I'm also interested. Have about a month to have some fun in the area.

Love your reviews and have been reading it all. Not sure where you'd recommend to go in the summer since you tend to leave though. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Most courses offer a discount card/program normally during the peak months of Jan to mid/end April to try to get the golfers visiting the valley to stay & play at their tracks.  I buy the Escena short stay membership for $275.00 with 1 free round valued at $125.00 which ends up costing me about $150.00 for ability to book 3 days in advance and get reduced rates, however, they have to be purchased by mid-December, after that they sell out, after that they offer specials on green fees. Desert Willow had a Platinum Club Card for $399.00 but it sold out by Oct 01, same deal you could book on line at reduced green fee's. By mid/late April the snowbirds have departed and the courses aren't all that busy & they all start to reduce green fee's and some stop selling TT around 1:00 pm.

Regarding courses not exactly in Palm Springs, if you don't mind driving 1.5 hrs or a bit less, Rams Hill in Borrego Springs is worth considering, it's down Hwy 86 towards the Salton Sea other than that course, I suggest you hang out in the Coachella Valley, there's 125 other courses for you to play.

For a one month stay/play it may be to your benefit to just watch for specials and book different courses to take advantage of any specials/promo's. GolfNow is a useful tool to find good deals either the next day or 1 week in advance.  This approach will also help you plan your golf days around the wind, May can be very windy & it's not much fun golfing in a sand storm when the wind is blowing 25-65 mph, unless you book Indian Canyons South, due to it's location there's very little wind on that course. This also allows you to play a variety of the better courses at fair & reasonable rates.

Example .. May 01 PGA West "Stadium" has 3 Hot Deals noted below, during peak season these sell for $350. or more. Desert Willow - "Firecliff" also has a few afternoon TT that are discounted by 50% or more compared to Feb/March pricing.

Ok I just spend two weeks in Palm Springs and played twelve courses... my thoughts below.

Indian Wells Players - Loved this course, better players will like it for sure.

Indian Wells Celebrity - Pretty good, pretty course, tight in spots but good fun.

PGA Nicklaus - Excellent second shot course, grew on me after I thought the first holes were a bit blah.

PGA Norman - Surprisingly good for a Norman course and playable, just stay out of the fairway bunkers.

PGA Mountain - Don't get why some don't think much of this. Best public course that is actually right on the mountain. Yes some holes aren't great but that is easily overridden but 8 or so amazing ones. Unless you can get on one of the top private courses you won't get better views.

PGA Stadium - Still don't know if I like this or not. It's worth playing but outside of 16 and 17 there's nothing amazing about it. And it's not that hard unless you play it off the tips.

DW Firecliff - Solid course start to finish, top 3 or 4 to play.

DW Mountain - Not in the top 5 but it's enjoyable and worth playing.

SilverRock - I wasn't going to play this originally with all the commentary on the back 9 and hotel works. Glad I played, def play if you are visiting... and yes the back 9 is weird!

Shadow Ridge - Nothing great, not horrible but least fav of the ones I played.

Classic Club - Little disappointed with all the positive talk in here about it. Great if you love a dogleg around the water. Still not bad to play.

Was lucky enough to play Tradition, that place is amazing.

Basically I don't think you can go wrong with any of the above, maybe skip Shadow Ridge.

It appears SilverRock, now the Talus Resort is having difficulty securing loans to carry on with the construction project and very little work has been done since last year.  NEWS Channel 3 – May 30th Article suggested they may have secured the Millions necessary to complete the project, or have they? …. https://kesq.com/news/2023/05/30/la-quinta-issues-60-day-deadline-as-talus-luxury-resort-developer-claims-essential-financing-secured/

TALUS-SIGN-1.jpg

An I-Team Investigation reveals developers still cannot say precisely when La Quinta’s Talus resort development, formerly known as SilverRock, will get the money needed to complete its construction.

Construction crews have made little progress on the main resort since last summer. And the city has now issued a 60-day deadline. The Robert Green Company promises the Coachella Valley’s first five-star development, including two branded luxury hotels by Pendry and Montage, a spa and conference center, and 84 turn-key single-family homes and condominiums.

In a statement issued Tuesday afternoon, in response to our latest request for a hard date of financing, developer Robert Green indicated financing is imminent. "Through careful planning, strategic partnerships, and a steadfast dedication, TALUS has successfully navigated the complex financial landscape to secure the essential funding needed to bring the project to completion. Currently, the final loan documents are being processed, and we anticipate a smooth closing for the project's final funding," the statement from Green read.

This follows months of delays and continued questions surrounding the funding behind Green’s project on land south of Avenue 52, west of Jefferson Street. An occasional golfer, some weathered wood framing on a main resort building, and a water truck to keep the sand down were some of the few activities I-Team investigator Jeff Stahl saw at the site.

Some work continues on building private residences, but funding for the major hotel, spa, and conference center facilities has remained elusive.

In an emailed statement to News Channel 3 on May 24, La Quinta City Manager Jon McMillen said, “The City fully expects Green to have closed the funding for the commercial components of the project within 60 days.”

It was in December, News Channel 3 reported the latest construction timeline missed by the Robert Green Company. It wouldn’t be completed by this fall as required by the city in its latest contract revision, but instead early next year 2024 for portions of the resort. And that was if all went as anticipated.

Robert Green updated the La Quinta City Council in January saying funding might take until February to close. “I’d like to sit here and tell you I know exactly when we’re going to close the senior loan, therefore the PACE financing,” Green said continuing, “but it could lapse well into February.”

In January, Green described 3 vital loans he said he absolutely needed to build two luxury hotels, a spa and a conference center, along with private homes and residences.

One was a $60 million construction loan City Manager Jon McMillan confirmed to NewsChannel 3 on May 13, Builder’s Capital is no longer committed to. There is also $170 million in C-PACE Financing with a group called Lieef. Green this month said it's ready to fund, but won’t pay out until a third key loan also pays out first.

That third loan is a $100 million Senior Construction Loan. Green still hasn’t given the city a date of when that loan will close. In a May 12th email statement to News Channel 3’s Jeff Stahl, he did not give a hard date but stated lenders, “have verified their commitment to close our loans at the earliest possible date.” He’s faced soaring interest rates and construction costs ballooning the project from $450 million to an estimated $600 million. Then, add the lending turmoil following Silicon Valley Bank and other bank collapses.

City council members have had many questions. Kathleen Fitzpatrick said, “Robert, I’m disappointed. I think every single day, each and every one of us gets questions about what’s going on.”

The City of La Quinta purchased the undeveloped land for $42 million in 2002, created the SilverRock Golf Couse, then sold the same ground in 2017 to Robert Green for $1 a parcel in hopes of collecting future tax revenues from its commercial activities.

The 2017 agreement gave Green the project’s Transient Occupancy Tax for 10 years. That’s money guests pay normally to the city. City leaders pushed for progress, Mayor Linda Evan saying at that January meeting, “Get us the money” while also promising monthly updates to the council from Green. He last appeared before the council a month later.

In March, Green’s rep told Jeff Stahl a funding agreement was expected in two to three weeks. There’s no mention of Montage La Quinta, one of the site’s two expected luxury hotels, on Montage’s current projects webpage.  It’s the same for the other Pendry Luxury Hotel. A Google search of the Pendry website also fails to show any La Quinta mention. “We’re all anxious,” said Fitzpatrick. Evans said, “You are the developer. You are developing the project.” Council member John Pena said, “What’s going on with Talus / SilverRock?”… “Other projects have been built.”

Again, Green says the final essential loan documents are currently being processed, and he anticipates a smooth closing for the project's final funding.

The city’s 2021 default notice has a provision allowing La Quinta to buy back the land. Would it, if a 60-day notice came and went?  The City Manager told Jeff Stahl in a statement Tuesday, "If loans haven’t closed by the middle of July the City will be exercising remedies available under the Purchase Sale and Development Agreement."

Jon McMillen added it's not appropriate at this time to disclose any action the City may take. He also said the City is currently working with Green as loan documents from prospective lenders are being finalized and continues to monitor progress on closings. Actions will be implemented if and when appropriate, he said.

Stay with KESQ News Channel 3 for continuing coverage of the Talus La Quinta development.

Yup ... my buddy who has a house on the La Quinta Country Club off 50th & Washington & plays Silver Rock a lot said ..... "The construction has been an eyesore for more than five years and will be for at least another five. The town screwed up giving away the golf course to an incompetent & obviously not financially viable developer. The course is a mess. They should pull the plug but then they are stuck with an albatross."

I would agree with him.
