July Florida trip

boycer

Recommended Posts

So my wife and I are going with my buddy and his wife for there 5th anniversary trip to Florida in July. Wives don't golf but we are staying in Daytona beach shores for a couple days where my parents live and my buddy got married.

We were going to track up to tpc sawgrass and play it, but it is $400 per person ( a little expensive) and getting aerated. So debating playing LPGA. Then we are traveling down to the Florida keys. Debating stopping somewhere down the Atlantic coast (palm beach or south beach) and playing a round and possibly staying somewhere like on the beach or at a resort.

Thought and recommendations please.

Wow, no response? You guys are killing me. Honda classic? South beach areas? Playing in key west does not seem good after the hurricane.

Thanks for the response. I think I could possibly look for a place on the beach to stay then just play a public course.

Well actual beachside in my area are two courses. Both Executive style, Spessard Holland (par 67) and Aquarina (par 62) As of now they are both in excellent shape and both on highway A1A. I like Spessard a little better. If you were to go inland over the causeway the better conditioned public courses are Duran and Viera. Baytree is hit or miss pending the weather as it drains very poorly. Duran and Viera will have the fastest greens. Another hidden gem is a little further south in Valkeria called The Habitat, it is actually where Billy Horshel grew up. Conditions as of last week were excellent greens and fairways. Also IMO it is a very tough course. it makes you think what to hit of the tee.

Also to note in July it's hot and humid, and the difference in the humidity especially at night between being beachside (where I live) and just a mile or two past the causeways is amazing.

I spoke with them somewhat recently and unless you belong to a private course and have your pro call, are staying at the resort, or staying at a local hotel (they might be able to get you a tee time), there is no other way to get on there.

Nice. Hum. Do you have to be a Florida resident?

Will debate staying there. Course to hold there I almost need to stay two nights. I need to call them. If I do the golf package I think its adding the ladies in who wont be golfing.

I actually like that idea and my buddy probably would also. His wife might not be happy. It's his 45 bday present and 5 year anniversary.

Take a wedge and a putter and a ball. Drop a few singles in the honor box and play KCB links. Dress code is boardies, floppies and no shirt. No pushcart but you'll need a cooler with wheels.

Take a bunch of selfies to drive frozen friends nuts.

I'm not joking.

The girls won't even know because their ass are parked poolside with a mojito at the cabana club.

Works for me.

If your going to the Keys get there quick as you can. All other time is wasted. I'll probably be there in July too. We rent a house in kcb every year.

Kcb? They wanted to stay in the keys for 7 days. I cant handle 7 days of straight drinking anymore. 3-4 is enough.

July is a difficult time for golf in Florida. Many courses aerate their greens and some of the top courses are not concerned with making the courses in tip top shape. They'll let the grass grow so the heat and heavy rain doesn't kill the grass for the busier time of year.

That's why I would be skeptical of playing Sawgrass in July. Very expensive and I've seen it not live up to it's high price tag from a conditioning standpoint.

If you play LPGA International, the Hills course is the better of the two. But again, you may find that it is being aerated.

You may want to check out St. John's Club up by St. Augustine as well for better value. Then there's Hammock Dunes and the World Golf Village in the area.

Going down the coast there's a large discrepancy in the top courses being private versus public. Sandridge in Vero is good, but I'd recommend PGA Village in Port St. Lucie even more. I'm assuming you'll be going down I-95. If you do, GPS will try to get you on the turnpike and 9 times out of 10 the turnpike isn't worth it. Just stay on I-95 to get where you want to go.

In Palm Beach the big resort is really PGA National (where they play the Honda Classic). Turnberry Isle in Aventura, Jacaranda in Plantation, Osprey Point in Boca Raton, Then of course, Doral.

Depends on what you're looking to spend, but some of those places require you to stay at their resort, so look out for that.

There's some decent value options like LPGA International, PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, then courses like Duran in Viera, Habitat down by Grant, Atlantic National in Lake Worth. But again, have to make sure they are not aerifying the course.
