Iron shaft lifespan

I did a search and came up empty handed. Lots of folks on here play irons 10+ years old. Would anyone have valid data on how long / how many rounds a reputable set of shafts should last?

It depends on where they are being stored. I have a buddy who plays irons from the 60's that have the original shafts in them.

They should last indefinitely baring damage. Mind you there are a few shafts, such as a few models by KBS, where the tips tend to bend. I've not heard of problems with True Temper or Nippon shafts. Relative to graphite shafts the same should be true.

They will last a really long time if you take care of them well. Don't store them in the trunk of your car or any other environment with extreme cold or hot temperatures. Best way to store them is in a non humid environment at room temperature to prevent the possibility of rust forming inside the steel shafts or weaken the epoxy bonds in in between the graphite layers in graphite shafts which will weaken it and cause breakage.

My current gamer irons have their original factory shafts and still working good after 20 years.

The above post’s got it right, depends on their storage. I’ve been paired with guys who kept the old sticks in a garage all four seasons and snapped an iron shaft easily. These guys aren’t compressing the ball or swinging that hard either.

I play my Palmer Standards I purchased in 1983, I think. DG S300 shafts. I recently started playing again after a 27 year hiatus. They seem fine to me.

Great feedback, everyone. I have three sets from the 2000s that I’m pretty fond of. Haven’t noticed any issues. Just wanted to make sure there wasn’t an expected expiration date!

when I went to get fit recently , I was swinging my seven iron 95 mph. I’ve had the clubs since 1997 and bought them used. I haven’t done awful at storing them, but they’ve been around. Honestly, I’m not confident I could tell you where they were the three years I lived in dc.

ive hit them off mats, tree roots... stupid things are built to last.
