New to golfing in the South - tips/tricks to survive the summer?

Georgia I find to be hot and muggy. Very little wind. I just keep stuff you need in your bag...ride, walking is nuts in this kind of heat.

As a northerner who has relocated to the South, my best advice is to get a cooling towel. They are clutch in the summer months when the dewpoint is in the upper 70s. You can get a good one for under $20. After that, drink lots of water and reapply the sunscreen.

@MichiganMan I'll have to look at cooling towels. It's a foreign concept to me. Sounds like you wet it before your round and wear it?

Lots of good comments. As for the "boys" - get you some 2Undr underwear and throw all the powders, ointments, etc. away. They're about $20/pr and worth every damn penny in hot weather. I wear them year round. Buy a size smaller than you normally would. I wear Kentwool socks exclusively. They're made mostly of wool but my feet never feel hot. I drink lots of water during the round. If I'm not stopping to use the bathroom at least once/side I haven't drank enough. After the round I drink a sports drink called Biolyte. It can be hard to find but it has more electrolytes than your average sports drink and keeps me from cramping at night. Welcome south brother and enjoy your golf.

Correct. Get them soaking wet with cold water and then you wring out as much excess water as you want and then drape it over your neck. Great for walking or riding. Just don’t let it ever dry out.

I have a bad time with cramping. Bananas and highlands leg cramp tablets really help me out. Also a pedialite sometimes the night before I know I’m going to be walking.

Can only tell you for Southern California. It's not humid here so it's pretty pleasant. That being said it's all about sun protection - bucket hat, umbrella on push cart or actually take a cart. You also need to hydrate non stop because you rarely see a cloud until November.

Play really early....or really late.

Bring multiple gloves and a towel.

I have played in GA and FL for a long time. Here is what I do:

-if its over 85*, ride don't walk

-drink water, add NUUM or electrolytes

-rotate gloves

-don't play from 11-3, that is for tourists

-absolutely wear a white hat, absolutely wear sunglasses

-don't wear anything with cotton in it

-use aquifor or vas for potential chafe areas

-play FAST, don't dawdle

-build in some cool-down time afterward, like couch time, shower, pool, etc.
