Ping PP59 Putter Grip equivalent?

Recommended Posts

The PP59 is a new grip so not sure if it will be for sale anywhere right now. You may eventually see it on GolfWorks or even Ping itself, but the grip is based on the PP58 which you can find anywhere.

Bumping an old thread because the PP59 grip really is nice. It's just slightly larger than the PP58 midsize, shape is the same. Construction is different. The one I have weighed about 85 grams. My guess is that it's made by Winn, I'm pretty sure they made some PING grips previously? But they don't offer a similar shape in their current line. Too bad.

PP59 Grip Info, Karsten Anser 5, Putter Refurbishing, and more...

1st post here on this site. This site has helped me in the past, so I hope this post helps others. I'm going to share some knowledge and opinions covering several topics I learned about during the past several months. All were topics on this site that I learned from, so thanks to everyone who posted that helped me.

First off, at the time of my posting, there are 2 more Heppler PP59 grips (with the white and copper stripes) available on ebay for $88 a piece, $94 after tax, free shipping. They are from Japan, but the seller said they'd be here within a couple of weeks, so we'll see. I bought 2 of them, but here's the link for the 2 remaining right now.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/353911329444

I had this PP59 grip on my Anser 2 that I'd been using for 10+ years.  As posts in this this thread suggest, the PP59 grip is desirable, and I must say it is truly a phenomenal grip! Feels great, looks great.

I originally purchased the PP59 grip at a Golf Mart about a year ago to replace my old grip on my Anser 2. They just happened to have one then. Recently I changed putters to a Karsten Anser 5, and wanted the same grip. Multiple shops said that this grip would probably be ruined by taking it off my old putter, and I ended up giving the putter to a friend anyway. They too loved the grip and didn't want to give it up, so fortunately for them it couldn't be swapped.  I had to find another!!

The Anser 5 is an amazing putter I'll talk more about, but with all the supply chain problems now, every golf shop I've talked to said they can no longer get the PP59 grips, or any individual grips from Ping. I've been looking for these PP59 grips for many, many months for my new putter, with no luck, until now.

I bought a PP60 for $75 through Ebay auction, thinking I might like it, but it just doesn't have the same feel. This is not to say the PP60 might not be a great grip for you, it's a bit fatter, with constant width, but just doesn't have the same countour and feel to my hands as the PP59. The PP60 grip is also a bit heavier, which seems to counterbalance my putter more, making the putterhead feel lighter, which I didn't want. So I have been determined to find the PP59.

I even considered buying a Heppler putter with the PP59 grip and swapping the shaft/grip for my putter head, and reselling the other putter, but that was a little too much, especially since most have the new adjustable length grips, which I didnt want, so I was patient. But I get it, some of us REALLY want this grip.

About the Karsten Anser 5; this addresses some topics from other threads, but I must say the Heppler grips with the copper stripes, PP59 included, look awesome on the Karsten putters with their copper putter heads!!

I'm a single digit handicap and have always been a solid putter. But I realized something wasn't quite right with my Anser 2 in relation to my stroke, pulling short putts, etc. After confirming through a putter fitting, I have a true SBST stroke. I highly recommend putter fittings as it was well worth it for the scientific knowledge about my particular putting stroke. (Probably would have saved me a bunch of money in putter experiments had I gone straight to a fitting and had some science behind my purchases.) Shaft length and lie angle are quite important, too. But I'm so happy now with the Karsten Anser 5, and I've turned others onto this particular putter, so maybe this putter help you too.

Experimented with a bunch of putters. One in particular worth noting was the Ping 1/2 Craz-E B, with a heavy 385g head. There's a lighter version, but the B stands for 'Belly' putter and you can find those heads with regular length shafts. I actually really did like this putter, so if you're looking for a significantly heavier head, this is worth checking out.

But as many have described in other posts, I wanted the same overall look and feel comparable to the traditional Anser 2. The Anser 5 has exactly that, but with a longer neck which makes it face balanced, but overall looks and feels almost identical. There are different Anser 5 putters with different weights. I found an Anser 5 Milled, but it is lighter than the Karsten Anser 5. The 345g head and may suit many golfers as this is a typical headweight. There is also an Anser 5 Heppler model, with a similar headweight, but it was only released in Japan, also rare but findable on Ebay. For my preferences, I wanted something a bit heavier, and the Karsten Anser 5 boasts a 365g headweight and feels absolutely perfect to me. Provides confidence on short puts, but not too heavy to make distance on longer putts less accurate. To me, and others, it's the perfect weight balance. Keep in mind, the grip weight can actually affect the weight of the putter. A heavier grip can make the head feel lighter. Also, some don't seem to like the copper head color, but I personally like the copper color, and this all gets back to the great look of this PP59 grip with the copper stripes matched with the copper head. Great combo!!

Putter refurbishing is also a great option for those that want it and can afford it to customize the look of their putters. Amongst other modifications, you can change the color of your putter head. If you happen to like the copper color, you could take your silver putter and change it to a copper-ish putter, which would look great with your new PP59 grip!

You could also just buy a Heppler series putter with the PP59 grip and get it all in one swoop.

Here's  a good article on putter refurbishing and places that do it:

https://www.golfwrx.com/573234/want-to-trick-out-your-putter-heres-what-you-need-to-know/

I spoke to a couple of these places and, unfortunately, the Karsten Anser 5 is a tricky one to modify. The places I spoke to were reluctant to touch this putter because of its composition with multiple metals, steel head with aluminum PING insert on the back.

I want to plug Ken Flanigan, who's not in the above article. He too does great refurbishing work on putters and clubs. He is also the inventor of Putter Butter. He said he could do almost anything to any club, and the pictures of his work on his website look great. My putter has a black and silver aluminum PING insert on the back. Amongst other things, he is going to make me my own custom insert to emulate the PING insert but with my short nickname. This is above and beyond what most other places seem to be able to do, so if your looking for true machine shop putter customization, check them out:

I actually have 2 of the Karsten Anser 5 putters. I bought the first one and it was a little bit worn, but once I realized it was the putter for me, I found one in mint condition and bought that too. The newer one is definitely more vibrant and fresh looking, and the color of the newer putter is definitely much different. Now that I've found my be-all-end-all putter, it helps to have a backup, like now when one is out for service at Ping, or when I send the other to Flanigan to work on, or if one ever got damaged, etc.

Right after I ordered the two PP59 grips from Japan, I came back to this article/thread remembering someone suggested calling Ping, and I did. To my surprise, Ping said they still have some PP59 grips, which they can regrip on my putter if I send my putter in to them. It cost $45 including sending it back to me and I paid an extra $15 for them to send me a preprinted shipping label to send it to them, so they billed me $60 for the whole thing and said the putter would be back in my hands within 2 weeks. Then an extra $8 for the box to ship it at FedEx, so $68 total. As opposed to buying from Ebay, you could actually save 20 or 30 bucks by sending it directly to Ping if they'll do the re-gripping for you, but you will be without your putter for a bit, whereas sourcing one, like from Ebay, might be worth the extra, as to not be without your putter for a while. Or, like me, you might want to hold onto an extra PP59 grip for the future if you ever get a new putter. In my case, I have 2 identical putters, and will now have an extra grip stashed away for the future even after I grip both putters.

I spent so much time on my quest both for the perfect putter and the perfect grip, I figured I might as well spend the time writing this to pass on my knowledge and experiences, and at very least hope this helps you finally find your very own PP59 grip.

I have finally found "my" perfect putter, and will never 3 putt again... otherwise I'll have to start the whole darn process all over again!!

Here's the ebay link again for the PP59 grips.

And here's the number for Ping, as they may be able to re-grip your putter with the PP59 as they are doing for me.
