First Look: Sub70 699u Pro Utility Iron

Recommended Posts

(Not so) quick backstory: I was one of the lucky two selected to test and keep a set of Sub70 639 series irons. I went with a 639-CB 4-7 / 639-MB 8-P combo with KBS $-Taper lite’s. Go check out the member review thread for more on those but the end result after over a month of testing is that they’re staying in the bag. I hit up Jason late last week and told him I’m loving the irons but I’m thinking I want to try something different at the end of the set. Don’t want to move to a hybrid but wouldn’t mind something a little easier to launch/more forgiving in the 4 iron spot. After talking it out and getting a good feel for what I’m looking for, Jason told me that the new 699u pro they had coming out soon would be a perfect transition particularly because they reduced the offset considerably from the standard 699u. Told me just wait a couple weeks and they should start getting the heads in...cool. Then he stops and says....oh just hit me, we have two finished heads sitting here that we used for photos, and they happen to be 4-iron heads. One in satin and one in black. Next thing I know, we’re doing up a build sheet to get the shaft and specs I want as Jason chuckles and says I’m inadvertently getting the very first head in existence, haha. But..I did check and he said absolutely share the pictures when you get it. Final cool part of the story - it wasn’t till this past Tuesday that J and I spoke on the phone again and we confirmed what I wanted and I paid him. He told me give them about a week to get it built and sent out...sounds good. Then I get a UPS notification YESTERDAY telling me i have a package getting delivered the next day from Sub70 Golf. Sure enough, it shows up today...crazy.

I’m taking it out when I play tomorrow and would expect I’ll have a couple opportunities to use it. I’ll report back with some initial impressions. Enjoy the amateur photos and honestly, if you’re even remotely considering giving these guys a look, talk to Jason and get a demo....really good stuff at this price

Thanks! Yeah those protos sound like they’re gonna be nice. Jason was telling me how cool it’s been working with TA3 on those

Love my regular 699u... I’d have gone with the pro if it were available... I’m definitely watching the ta3 irons with great interest...

I wish there was some lefty options as I’m in love with a bunch of this stuff!

Although I get it from a business standpoint it’s always disappointing to put a company in the “can’t play” pile with all this amazing gear.

I'm in the same boat. I am still considering building a set of the 699's but its a bummer not to be able to get the Pros or the Utility.

I too joined the Sub70 group today.

I spoke with Jason and ordered this same set up.

699pro - 4i

639cb - 5&6

639mb - 7-pw

Disappoint part is I have to wait one week before the build.  MB are on back order.

Looking forward to trying them.  I’ve been at local PGA superstore everyday practicing with various MB just to get the feeling of them.

Congrats. That’s a nice build. I like the look of all 3 models. Look forward to your playing update!

Awesome to hear you're jumping on board!  Great choice in set makeup as well.....it's virtually the same as mine.  Only differences is that my 4 is the new 699U Pro and my combo setup has the 7 as a CB as opposed to an MB.  Either way, can't go wrong.....post pics when you get them!

Do you have any regrets going with 7i in CB vs MB?

I went with MB 7i.

No, definitely would not say I have any regrets on the makeup decision.  Couple reasons for that....first and foremost, I was selected to test a set and did not have to pay for them.  That kinda freed me up to choose what I thought would be best, but at the same time I knew that if I needed to buy a single iron separately....no big deal.  Secondly (and you might have read this from my or others' reviews of the 639's), the MB's aren't exactly your traditional "MB profile".  Particularly since you've been investing time going to the store and hitting other blades, I think you'll notice that these are definitely a little larger overall than your traditional MB and definitely have a bit more offset.  Nothing crazy....just more than you would expect in a blade.  The PW in particular really through me for a loop the first time I saw it....it actually has the most amount of offset of any of the 3 MB irons I have (I noted that in my review).  So as weird as it is to say, I find the CB's to have a more compact (possibly demanding) look at address than the MB's.  Now again, I'm not comparing apples to apples since we're talking about long/mid irons versus short irons, but it's for sure a different dynamic.  At the end of the day they're still muscle backs that are not going to be wildly forgiving, but you will almost certainly notice design aspects (at least in the shorter irons) that provide the visual of a larger, more forgiving iron.  So far, the setup has worked quite well for me!

I was ready to buy a SIM UDI until I stumbled on this topic. After a few conversations with Jason at Sub 70, I decided to try the 699U Pro and figured I would throw in a 639mb 9i to bookend my current irons (2016 TM M2 Tours). The 9i choice stems from the high success I have had this year with a Vokey 46 degree PW in place of the set wedge on terms of distance control - why not add that to my 9i as well? My thinking with this is if things go splendidly, I could always throw in the 8 next! I should note that I do still really like the M2 Tours, just seeing an evolution in my swing and starting to get a bit more capable of taking a bit off of a shot to hit a distance, and sometimes get an unexpected bomb with the M2 Tours.

Specs:

699u Pro 2i (bent 1.5 deg strong)

HZRDUS Smoke 90 6.5

Lamkin crossline

639mb 9i built to match my M2 Tour 9i

Project X black 7.0

Loft 40 degrees

Lie 63.5 degrees

Lamkin crossline

Jason was awesome to deal with, and turnaround to Canada was less than 2 weeks since order was placed! I can only imagine how many phone calls he gets, but he makes a point of returning all of them before the end of each day. The personal note in the box is a nice touch, too!

Anyway, the clubs arrived today! I will post a mini-review once hit, but thought I would at least add some pics to drool over for now. Some show comparisons to my M2 Tour (9i vs 9i and 2i vs 3i).

Happy to have heard about these guys when I was ready to buy something new!
