Personal Top-10

Recommended Posts

We've all dreamt of our perfect collection, but few of us will be lucky enough to find them all. So let's throw perfect out the window, and show our personal top-10 persimmon woods in our own collections. Mine will be drivers only, but don't let that stop you from going fairway woods as well!729290675_IMG_20201228_141217703_HDR3.jpg.e89fc18c2d493ca563572b85b5e2730b.jpg1710646835_IMG_20201228_1416523042.jpg.1d3f16323b7042e7a45f6e15437506ae.jpg559151350_IMG_20201228_1421573312.jpg.9b4c1088f9ce67d2add326c28d7c6d00.jpg

Lovely collection!

I will also stick with drivers only. I have gone with the thought of, if the house was on fire and I could only rescue 10, which 10 would it be?

I have gone for Harry Busson, Peter Broadbent, Joe Powell Limited Edition, Joe Powell Gleneagles, Toney Penna Mod 1, Powerbilt HBW84, Paul Gibson, MacGregor M43, MacGregor Tommy Armour 693 and, oddly, MacGregor Jack Nicklaus SEOM.

10th place was a struggle but the Jack Nicklaus SEOM was the first persimmon I ever bought / owned and so, although nothing special as a club and I have others of greater collector interest there is a story behind it and it has a special place in my heart. I played some of my best golf and hit some of my best drives with that club. I graduated up to be a (very) average golfer with that wood! 😁

My original Tiger headcover is also pictured! 12 years before someone came along and copied me!

Often wondered what happened to him but I have remained a (very) average golfer. 🙂

Nice collection.

I like the Fazer by Paul Gibson, I've never seen one of those before and have always taken Fazer to be at the more budget end of the market, obviously not!

Jiggered, I have the same recollection. Can't remember if it was a brand or a model called Fazer but as I recall it was budget end.

The Paul Gibson's tend to have quite good grain. Others aren't named and seem to have a numeric coding which I can't decipher.

I call the darkest brown one is "The Beast". 45" shaft which could hang of and not make deflect!

Great collection Foozle, a lot of really good looking clubs in there. You already know my feelings on your Harry Busson and the Powell's, I'm not surprised they made the cut! I actually swapped out my Joe Powell Limited for the Honma, but you could flip a coin over which is better.

Fazer was definitely a brand, they were active from the 1980s, maybe slightly earlier and continued for quite a while.

Most of the irons I've seen were cavity back, a few examples below, and the woods were generally metals.

Checking the iron pictures I'm sure that they were budget end but maybe they made a foray into the upper end with your wood, I wonder if there was a matching set of irons?

My top 10 woods for my collection would be:

1954-1955 MacGregor 945W (2 drivers, 2-4)

1950-1952 MacGregor 693 (1-4)

1953-1955 MacGregor M85W (2 drivers, 2-3)

1950-1955 MacGregor M09 LFF

1950-1951 MacGregor M43T (4 drivers, 2-3)

1954-1955 MacGregor Toney Penna TP Special (1-4)

1953 MacGregor 945W (1-4)

Wood Brothers Texan (driver, made for Gene Sauers)

1954 MacGregor Toney Penna WW

Wood Brothers Australian

The woods I have in bold are what I have in my possession.  I may have an opportunity to acquire a WB Australian some time in 2021.  The Unicorn of the bunch is the WW Special.  I am on the hunt for any WW Special wood.  It doesn't matter what WW Special I am able to get as long as I get one.  The hunt continues.

RobotDoc has shamed me into dragging my woods out.  I have most of what I'd like, given here are pretty limited options for lefties.  Late 40's thru to EoM 653's and EoM and SEoM M80W's.  The only Unicorn is a Wood Bros Texan.  A lefty popped up in 2020 but I hesitated because the map of Texas was reversed.  By the time I found out it was real it was gone.  Not sure I'll ever see another pop up.

I have tried to do this and all I can say is I’m so lucky to have a top 101 with 97 persimmon woods, 1 persimmon putter, and my 3 all-time favorite laminated woods. As much as Sam likes my ‘50 LFF Dave Wood restored I can’t rank that ahead of any other LFF in my collection. The other 4 can all make good arguments for #1. The DW LFF remains the only one not hit and if it did out hit the others(that would really be saying a lot too) then yes it would be #1.

Tom, your LFF collection is outstanding!  I love seeing them any day that ends with a "Y"!  I am part of the group that believes that any great collection contains at least 1 MacGregor LFF.
