Hybrid users who also love driving irons

I’m bored but... I have a 2 /17 driving iron that I love hit it from all over. I’m thinking a 20 hybrid as a 3 iron replacement and I love long irons but want something a little higher and softer 

I’ve always hated hybrids and of course hook them . Any similar converts that found the holy grail after giving up on hybrids .

I do this exact thing! 17 degree Titleist u500 into a 21 degree Titleist TS3 Hybrid. Gives me a lot of versatility. The 2 irons is pretty much only off the tee, but the hybrid is great for par 3's that are over 200, and around the course. It's my first hybrid because like you i could never hit them. But after spending some time with it ive found a reliable straight and very high ball flight with it

Page 17, Section A, from the Holy Grail of Hybrids:

• Source a Callaway Apex 20*
• Add heavier shaft (85-100 grams, maybe even steel). Chop the shaft length down to an iron length. ie 3 iron is 39 inches, 3 hybrid is 40 inches, so chop 1 inch. 
• Add weight to the head to normalize swing weight.

 

now you have a flatter lie angle than wont go left. Much more control with the shorter shaft. Heavier shaft feels more iron like. This setup will let you have the option to bring the flight down. Great 'driving hybrid' off the tee club. But has that extra forgiveness and launch when you need to get it up with some more spin into greens.

I went from long Irons to Taylormade GPR seeing i could pick from hi,mid and lo i could get the look i wanted. They fit the bill for me, not saying you will like it but it is an idea.

I don’t have the swing speed for the really low lofts but I play a Mizuno CLK 4H and a ZU85 4i. The 4i is for off the tee and the hybrid everywhere else. Don’t sleep on the CLK, stock lie is really flat and the club sits neutral. I have no problem hitting a stock fade with it.

First two PXG hybrids are solid, haven't hit the latest. The PXG's on the flattest setting look perfect to me. Also liked the TS3 and first Apex hybrid (non jailbreak) version. Going with a heavier shaft certainly helps a number of people fight the left miss. The Ping hybrid set really flat is worth a try. 

 

Similar to you I prefer driving irons/ utility irons and there are certainly higher launch utility irons that may fit your needs paired with the right higher launch shaft.

Callaway Mavrik Pro hybrid is amazing and i'm not a hybrid fan.  Callaway can also bend them for you if you order direct on the website.

PXG Gen2. Put it in the PXG setting (3* flat) and put the weights in the fade position and you will not hook this club.

Tour edge exotics, exs pro hybrid is awesome. For a cheaper option look at the older CBX 119 line. Love my long irons and these are awesome underrated clubs. 85g or so shaft in there would

be ideal.

I often use a Ping Rapture DI (18*) in tandem with G15 20*, though if it’s dry windy and rough not too think I’ll swap the hybrid for a 21* Crossover.

here. just different purpose. sure they have similar distance, but pros & weaknesses respectively. result also varies depending on the course specifics. i do need, like using both.  

 

my setup:

hybrid: 18º JDM "Royal Collection" (i knon i know) + NS Pro 950FW X (yup steel shaft)

DI: Nike Vapor Fly Pro 21º #4 + Accra TourZ (prev gen) Hybrid M5

 

if i need to attend a 2 club challenge comp, these are the two.

The Titleist hybrids' SureFit allows you to dial in loft and lie to fight hooks, if needed. 

 

I am setting up my bag for next year along similar lines as you.  19* Sub 70 699 Pro U utility iron with my 21* Titleist 816 H2 hybrid set at 22.

 

I have to have at least one hybrid in the bag for long shots out of the rough, but I like utility irons off the tee.
