Rules that ever kids needs to know and watch out for.

Here is the rule since a lot people have never read it. Notice this part

But if the player improves the putting green by taking actions that exceed what is reasonable to restore the putting green to its original condition (such as by creating a pathway to the hole or by using an object that is not allowed), the player gets the general penalty for breach of Rule 8.1a.

https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/rules/rules-2019/rules-of-golf/rule-13.html

c. Improvements Allowed on Putting Green

During a round and while play is stopped under Rule 5.7a, a player may take these two actions on the putting green, no matter whether the ball is on or off the putting green:

(1) Removal of Sand and Loose Soil. Sand and loose soil on the putting green (but not anywhere else on the course) may be removed without penalty.

(2) Repair of Damage. A player may repair damage on the putting green without penalty by taking reasonable actions to restore the putting green as nearly as possible to its original condition, but only:

  • By using his or her hand, foot or other part of the body or a normal ball-mark repair tool, tee, club or similar item of normal equipment, and

  • Without unreasonably delaying play (see Rule 5.6a).

But if the player improves the putting green by taking actions that exceed what is reasonable to restore the putting green to its original condition (such as by creating a pathway to the hole or by using an object that is not allowed), the player gets the general penalty for breach of Rule 8.1a.

“Damage on the putting green ” means any damage caused by a person or outside influence, such as:

  • Ball marks, shoe damage (such as spike marks) and scrapes or indentations caused by equipment or a flagstick,

  • Old hole plugs, turf plugs, seams of cut turf and scrapes or indentations from maintenance tools or vehicles,

  • Animal tracks or hoof indentations, and

  • Embedded objects (such as a stone, acorn or tee).

But “damage on the putting green ” does not include any damage or conditions that result from:

  • Normal practices for maintaining the overall condition of the putting green (such as aeration holes and grooves from vertical mowing),

  • Irrigation or rain or other natural forces,

  • Natural surface imperfections (such as weeds or areas of bare, diseased or uneven growth), or

  • Natural wear of the hole.

I already knew what the rule said, your post made it clear you really did not, just apparently unusually fearful of this sort of violation.  I mean how many kids, how many, are cheating and we can't catch them? And how much of this useless angst gets transferred in negative ways to the junior you want to succeed? Pretty much all of it, but no way you see that.

Watch out for those kids that never miss a fairway but use chapstick and never have chapped lips.  I think they're greasing the face of their driver.

No actually, chapstick with no cover that goes in their ball pants pocket, then playing pocket pool, greasing the ball, not the driver. Easier to get away with 🙂 Tiger needs to quit living thru his kid and enjoy the luxury they both have.

The kid who presses his club behind the ball and basically fluffs the lie.

I think a lot kids get in a Bad habit and in some cases just don't know this is basically cheating. It's hard to catch but some kids don't have a clue. Others do it on purpose.  You will see this on pretty much on any given weekend.   Move up on higher tournaments your going to get caught and they are not going to be able to hit lies they need to learn.

I've seen this quite a bit, especially at the younger ages when they are hitting out of thick rough.  I've seen multiple kids actually step on the rough behind the ball to improve their lie.

Well  greasing a driver does does get rid of a slice and is against the rules of golf.   Back in the day it was a big deal. Now however you have to have a pretty bad swing for it to matter with today's driver.

I think  that is where a lot this starts and when a kid is young under 12 most of us will look the other way.  I don't think anyone wants to call out a young kid who just trying to hit a ball especially in the rough where they have no chance.

But a kid who is in High School that is another story they need to learn to play as it lies.   Anyone who says it's okay do you really think a college coach is not going to see them press a club down and then hit a ball.   Last thing they want to see.

@tiger1873Don't be the parent ever other parent hates their child being in that group.

I am not going out and calling kids out on any of this stuff and I told my kids to not either.  Obviously is someone is going out there way to cheat you need to worry about that.

The big issue I see is the vast majority of kids have no clue about a lot things and some even think it ok.  If I see this stuff what it usually tells me the tournaments that you see this go on are simply not good.  The vast majority of these tournaments usually only have 1-2 tournaments officials you see when your playing.

A lot this stuff is not a big deal but take something as simple as a ball marker.  I don't see how it is a huge advantage if you place it in front or back of the marker and honestly who is going to call anyone out on it.  Anyone who plays tournament golf needs to be careful and mark the ball the same all the time.  You don't want to be in a major event and have someone call you out for something like that. Happens all the time.

We are now traveling to tournaments there is nothing worse then seeing a kid travel and because they didn't understand something and get a penalty or worse DQ.  It happens a lot out there.

This thread was never about calling people out when you are playing with them.  Despite what people are saying on here following strict rules on your own play may make golf harder but is exactly what a person needs to do to improve.

Tournament Officials aren't there to watch for kids cheating.  They assume everyone is playing be the rules.  They are simply there to help make a ruling or speed up play.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

A few tournament officials in some tours will randomly count the scores of players.   If the players counts on there holes are off when they turn the scorecards in they can and do DQ them.  I've seen it once happen when a group in front of my kid was turning in a scorecard and they gave the kid a lot chances.  I also heard of it happening an seen a few kids WD from tournaments who were being questioned about their score.

I like it when tournaments collect scores every few holes or mid round to me it just instills confidence in the results.  If your only reporting scores at the scoring table at the end of the round they are either understaffed or just don't care.  One reason people like FJT they collect scores mid round  and have tons of officials everywhere.

The better tours all watch the field and there is nothing wrong with that. The reality is just the mere presence of officials helps with the overall quality of scores.
