Congratulations! It is a big deal. I remember the first time I broke 80, I was on cloud frickin' nine for days. But like someone said earlier, now that you've tasted sub-80, you'll want it all the time now. It's like a drug.

Congrats! I'm typically low to mid 80s. Can't tell you how many rounds I've shot 80. Finally broke through this past November with a 79. Eagle on 18 to boot. I actually didn't realize my score, my playing partner was keeping score and kept his mouth shut. I was hoping once I broke 80 the mental hurdle would be out of the way. Haven't sniffed the 70s since!

Most do care. Well done. Tell us what it was that led you to do it. More putts dropped? Got up and down more? Hitting more greens?

I think one of the most important thing was no wasted shots.  No duffed chips, no dropped shots, no water balls.  Only hit sand twice. I replaced my driver in December (and hybrids and irons) and the dispersion is so much better.  Even my misses were in the first cut.

That is a great achievement, congratulations!!

Talk us through the 18th - how were you feeling? Did you know you had a good score on the go? Nerves?

I'm the kind of golfer who doesn't add up scores at the turn or keep track, I don't want any undue pressure.  But I couldn't ignore 3 over at the turn just looking at the card with 3 bogeys and the rest pars.  Between 8 and 13 I had 5 bogeys and 1 par so I thought maybe not today.  But I finished with 4 pars and a bogey, par on the 18th.  I knew it was going to be close going into the 18th.  Even after the round I didn't add them it until I get home, but I knew it might be special.

That's a huge deal - congrats!! What do you think made the biggest difference in your game to get your there? Technical - chipping, more FIRs? Or was it course management / mental?

I'm a big believer on the mental side.  I don't add up my scores as I go along, don't want the pressure.  I don't carry a second ball in my pocket, why should I expect to need it?  Zen Golf and Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect have helped me sort out the mental. I was also very aware of course management.  Where to place the shot to give myself the best chance of not making a big number.  That's been my downfall before.  You can't have 10 pars but two sevens or even an eight and expect to score well.  Big numbers have killed my rounds in the past.

I need to check out those books, I've never read them.

That's awesome to hear, sounds like you've got a great mindset toward the game and how you think through a round, and it's obviously showing in your scores!
