Callaway Apex 21 DCB Irons

The DCB's feel much better than the JPX's. The JPX's are very nice and I still have them but the DCB's feel better and are just as forgiving.

I have a combo set - Apex 21 stand PW-7, and Apex 21 DCB 4,5,6.

I was hitting them in my hitting bay today and really think the DCB's are perfect for your handicap.  I'm about a 12-14 depending on the day and I'm leaning towards replacing my PW-7 with the DCB because they are just easier to find the sweet spot and very forgiving on mishits.

I'm not sure they are any longer, although they are a 1/2 degree stronger lofts.  Just a really nice feel to them.

The other really strange thing is the 9i (which is Apex standard) has a noticeably different sound than the PW, 8, and 7.  Not sure what the deal is there.

I previously played the T300's from Titleist and still have them.  I'm going to switch off once the season starts and then decide which one works the best for me.  Right now, it's pretty hard to pick a winner.  I can say that the DCB's in the 4,5,6 are really solid and I'd have to give them the edge over the T300's in the same irons.  I believe they are lofted comparably.

@jjfcpa, any thoughts on this a year later? I’m considering the full set of DCBs vs splitting the set and getting 8-AW as regular Apex 21s…interested in your feedback.

I have a full set of DCB's (AW thru 6i) that I bought last November.

I Love them.

Glad to hear it! For my own context, would you mind sharing your handicap? Perhaps where it was and where it is now if it’s changed at all?

Currently at a 9.3.

I live in Upstate NY so we're just getting into golf season now.

But I spent all winter at my local Sim playing the clubs and just loved how I was hitting the ball.

Fully expect that to translate to the course when I head out this spring.

Awesome - seemingly satisfied with how the short ones hit/spin in the sim? Any reason you’d steer me toward the regular apex for 8-AW, or any reason you didn’t consider a combo? Forgiveness would be my guess, but thought I’d ask…

Yes, I'm happy with how the short ones hit/spin at the sim (I was actually "fit" into the DCB's at CC).

I picked up golf relatively late in life (my mid 30's, I'm now 64).

So I've always been about hitting the golf ball as straight as possible as consistently as possible.

And picking golf clubs that make that job as easy as possible has always been my goal (minimize the pain of my misses)

And 1) I liked the look and feel of the DCB's, and 2) I figured if they're more forgiving on the long irons, they're probably going to be more forgiving on the short irons too.

So yes, forgiveness is the reason I didn't consider any combo.

It's probably why I also play the Callaway Mack Daddy CB Wedges (which I also have absolutely fallen in love with - after initially having tried the regular Jaws Full Toe Wedges).  They're so forgiving, feel great AND great spin.  My confidence has soared with these wedges.

Hope this helps.

This is all helpful info, I appreciate you taking the time to share! I suppose I’m worried about the shorter ones since I also want to leave room to “grow into em” (the regular Apex’s) but maybe that’s not worth it at the cost of forgiveness.

I am still loving mine as well. I am a 12 handicap and they are so easy to hit and feel great. I have the stock Elevate 85 shaft (not a high swing speed player) and the shaft is smooth. Definately hits a high ball flight but not balooning, I really like the flight. I also have the Mac Daddy wedges and cannot say enough about how good they are....both on full shots and around the greens.

Yep, love the wedges.  I've never felt so confident with a wedge in my hand!

i use the standard apex 21, tried the dcb, but felt like i was getting the same capabilities with the standard apex while exchanging forgivensess for feel/looks/workability which i was fine with

Thought I'd give this one a little bump.

Currently have a set of Callaway Rogue ST Pros and am struggling a bit with the 4/5 iron and was thinking about adding either the Apex 21 DCB 4 & 5 or the Rogue ST Max 4 &5.

Is there anyone who could give a comment regarding the overall size/offset difference of these two heads?

Rogue ST Max are full-on chunky Callaway GI irons, if you have ever played those. Along the lines of Steelhead XR, Big Bertha, etc. Certainly forgiving, but very different from your ST Pros.

Apex DCB are outstanding irons. They are my current yang to the yin of my P790's, and I bounce back and forth between the two for my gamers. DCB are probably one of the most under-appreciated irons in recent years IMHO, as they are not easy to categorize. Forged, but not players irons, or players distance irons. Forgiving, but not Ping G series forgiving. But they are great for someone who wants a nice looking iron, but doesn't want too unforgiving or too shovely.

That helps a lot!  I definitely want to add something bigger than the current ST Pros as I'll be using the 4/5 iron mostly on short par 4s or par 5 layups and my DHY was very inconsistent.

It sounds like the DCBs would be a good add to the current set makeup.

Sure thing. Not sure what Axiom shafts you play in your ST Pros, but I have the Recoil Dart 105 F4 shafts in my Apex DCB's, and they pair wonderfully. They could absolutely be my every-day set, and still could be. If you can handle the ST Pros, you should find the Apex DCB's pretty easy to hit. Good luck.

I play Apex 19 and had the same desire for something more forgiving in 4/5 iron. I think the ST Pro you are playing are very similar in size/offset to my Apex. I think the DCB combos really well with these and I would highly recommend.

That's what I'm hoping.  I noticed that they had a trade bonus, so I traded in a Versa and DHY that I wasn't using this year and the net out of pocked was $17 (went with MMT 95s shaft, but will switch to Axiom when those come in).

I've tried hybrids a lot and they NEVER work out, so hoping that the DCBs will be a good addition to the set.
