TIM929,

You didn't mention how your round went at Spyglass and what you thought about the course.

Ahh yes!

Spy glass was a blast! I feel it was more organic, lots of natural beauty to this course. it’s a harder play vs PB, but lots of fun.

I need to play it a few more times to really appreciate it, but PB was my fav by far lol.

Thanks for sharing the pictures and obviously you're happy that your trip was delayed as the weather was great when you went.

I really enjoy playing Spy and to me it's tougher than Pebble but there's only one Pebble.

Yes sir, it was def worth the wait 🙂

I also stayed a night at quail lodge which was interesting... there were putting greens at the front of the rooms and at the back door there is a pond, It’s really peaceful. I’m thinking of staying and playing at quail for one day on my next trip to play pebble. I just really enjoy PB/Carmel area.

As mentioned in a past PM to you, my wife and I have stayed at Quail several times and they have some really good room rates at times during the week.  I can see that your room overlooked the pond and the restaurant. It is a peaceful place to stay and a nice place to walk as well.

The putting green is 9 holes and it's not easy either. We always get a room that's called a cottage because it's on the first floor with no one above you. The room that we get is further away from Carmel Valley road so it's really quiet and the patio looks out at the 14th fairway.

The golf course is always in great condition and if you're staying on property you get a deal on green fees.

The temperature in Carmel Valley is much warmer than at Pebble

There's a restaurant that has a pretty good breakfast called the Wagon Wheel which is across the street from Quail towards Carmel Valley Rd.

I just played Spyglass today and holy hell it was tough lol. Pins were super tucked and the rain and wind didn't help either, was tough to hold greens. Definitely would love to come back and play with clear weather as the course itself was superb. Playing Pebble tomorrow and conditions supposedly will be better which will be nice. Will have a forecaddie tomorrow too so that will help a lot.

I can imagine that Spy was really tough today with the rain and wind. You should try to play Spy again without the rain and wind and I think that you'd really like it.

Have a really good time at Pebble tomorrow and hopefully the weather will be better!

Yeah I'd love to come back with nicer weather, I'm thinking April-May would be the ideal time. And thanks, I hope so too! Lol

That maybe a good time as I've been to Pebble many times in April - May with good weather but usually the best weather without worrying about rain or the marine layer is August - Oct.

That's a good point, I assume the course conditions around that time still would be pretty pristine.

There won't be any issues with the course conditions just remember that the Pebble Beach Concours is Sunday August 15th and the Pure Insurance Champions Tour event is Sept. 24th - 26th so you would have tournament conditions before and after the tourney.

Was this your first time playing Pebble and what did you think about the course?

Yup first time. Before playing I always knew Pebble was cool but thought it was somewhat overrated, especially considering the huge green fee. My opinion on that is totally changed, the green fee is worth every penny. I'm convinced holes 6-10 is THE coolest stretch of golf on the planet. Some heavy fog did roll in from 8-10 though but I got good views coming back along 13 and 14. I've also heard that Spyglass is generally considered better from a pure golf course layout standpoint. I agree with that, Spyglass is definitely a bigger test of one's golf game. But both courses were awesome in their own ways. I'll be coming back in the future for sure!

Quail Lodge & Carmel Valley Ranch are both pretty underrated courses, imo, and both have great lodging facilities. They're overshadowed by the courses down on the peninsula for sure.

I agree with you and we've stayed at both several times and I really like both courses and Carmel Valley is a Pete Dye course

I've been working remotely since the pandemic started and the company where I work is having us come back to the office starting this Monday.

Because I'll be going back Monday, my wife decided to take me to Pebble today for lunch at Stillwater Bar & Grill and it was in the low 70's and sunny so they had a nice table for two outside on the patio for us. Lunch was delicious as we had a glass of Champagne, Pacific Tartar and Monterey Bay Red Abalone and our server was someone that we've known for ~ 25 years. I think that I will take some friends down sometime to play The Hay as I have four free passes or maybe we'll play Spy first then The Hay.

Someone talk me into getting a caddy for Spyglass soon. I am thinking with the shortage of caddies I use one on Pebble but not Spyglass. Thoughts?

If you've never played Spy it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a caddy.  Just request a caddy when you make your reservation for both if you'd like.
