Srixon ZX5 irons? Are they for real?

I've only played a rental set of the ZX5 irons but they really impressed me.  Although they are a comparable iron to the G425 irons they have been designed to look more like a players iron instead. Very impressive topline appearance and good forgiveness too. I currently play a mixed set of ie1 and G irons and could see playing a similar set of ZX5s and 7s. From what I've been told the ZX5s were designed to be in between the GI and players irons too.

ZX5s are a cheat code. I gamed them for a season and were by far the least frustrating set I've ever hit - very consistent and very easy to hit. They also feel amazing. I regret selling those irons. I have them now in a combo set with ZX7s as my backup!

What shaft did you have on them and what is your 7 iron SS? Thanks

Regarding rust on ZX5s: I have rust appearing on the backs of several irons, just as shown in the picture. At the rear of the emblem, some partially down the channel. What concerns me is:1) I've never had irons do this before; 2) I can't tell what is happening behind there that may cause a loss of performance or, ultimately, failure. 3) my irons are one week past the one year warranty; 4) I was told by someone up my Srixon supply chain, that it was caused by fertilizer on the golf course. Plausible or not, I've not had this issue before. I clean my clubs after each shot and use club covers to keep them from beating each other ugly. I shouldn't have to use a blow dryer or de-rust potions; and if that is a characteristic of these irons (WHICH ARE THE BEST PERFORMING IRONS I HAVE EVER HAD- and I'm 67) we should be told. Makes me leary of considering the MKII version.

I’m considering a zx4/zx5 combo set of the mkii. Should I be concerned about rusting in the zx5 cavity and therefore just combo the zx4 with zx7? Obviously I would have to consider lofts but it might help avoid issues like rusting?

I got rid of my ZX5s a few weeks ago after getting fit for Mizuno Hot Metals. They lasted less than 2 weeks in the bag.

 

I returned them under the Playability program and have a set of MK2 ZX5s with my beloved Modus 105 shaft on the way.

Yeah, a bad decision all the way around. Sometimes you get excited by something new and realize it was a mistake.

 

Got notified the Mkii's should be in on Friday. They let me keep the HMs until they come. I played another round with them last Friday and said at least a dozen times "I hate these irons."

I went with the HMs instead of the HMPs. I did a session with the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer a couple of weeks earlier. They asked what I played and I told them ZX5s. They used an HMP head saying it would be the most similar. It was only 3 swings, but I liked the head enough to go down the rabbit hole and go back and make the switch. I thought I'd with the HMs as they were supposed to be a bit more forgiving and the size difference in the bay didn't seem huge. But once I got out with them, they seemed bigger and a lot more offset. And I didn't hit them nearly as well as my ZX5s. I had a lot of low hooks with them. The optimizer said the DG105s was a the best fit (4.9). And for some reason the overall club just feels heavier than my ZX5s.

 

I had high hopes.  My fitting bay numbers were great (for me). But I couldn't replicate it on the course.  My iron play had been the best part of my game. In 3 rounds and 4 range sessions, I had no faith in the 6-9 irons.  I should have left well enough alone.

I’m very surprised why didn’t you try the HMP more compact, players look, less offset as today they would still be your irons

923 HMPs are really, really nice !

You probably should have bought the irons you demo’d that you liked but hopefully it wasn’t too big of a financial mistake. 

have the HMP’s and like them a lot due to smaller head/low offset but I still want to demo the new ZX5’s.

I 100% should have. I let the 'Pro' in the title scare me off. The guy who did the MSO fitting a couple of weeks before I got them said 'don't let the Pro' in the name fool you, they are very forgiving - just smaller.

I was able to swap them under the playability program, so I just had to pay the difference. (about $100)

do you have the same shaft in the zx5 (dG105 S)? I’m just about the same swing speed and I have the dg105 S shaft in my HMP and love them, but always been curious to try the zx5’s too.

I went back to the Modus 105 in the new ZX5s. A part of me was curious bc they were far and away the best match on the MSO. But I decided to go with what I was familiar with in the ZX5s.
