Srixon ZX5 irons? Are they for real?

Recommended Posts

Well I am now wondering if I have made a mistake. I got fit for the Ping I210’s which I really wanted at the end of the year. Of course I didn’t receive them till February and I truly like them so far. I went for a driver fitting on Wednesday and during the process I got the chance to hit the ZX5 7 iron....and OH MY!!!! I have never hit a iron so high(I’m a lower ball flight guy) yet so far as well. Wondering if anyone else is in my shoes, or should I just ignore and stick with what I have lol.

Great question!

I have been itching to hit the i210s. I am current ZX5 full set owner. I can tell you that that are so super easy to hit (for me). I hit them outdoors on a trackman and experienced the same; easy distance, optimal height, and great decent angle. Lower spin, but I hold greens no problem.
My only ‘gripe’ has been the sole widths on 7-PW. I hit them just fine, but usually prefer a little thinner sole on my scoring irons. The natural response is to combo with ZX7s, but I prefer to play a uniform set.

Having said that, from what I have read and seen, the i210s look like money as well.
If they have my preferred sole width, I would consider them for sure.

As someone who has been playing MP4s for a long time and mostly care about what the club looks like at address, the ZX5 absolutely blew me away with how freaking good it looked next to the ball. I've never seen what is basically an SGI look that good at address. The ZX5 looks like a players cavity, and the ZX7 almost looks like a blade

I used to prefer to play a uniform set, but the more and more I thought about it and seeing good players mix it up, decided to go to T100s 7-PW 5,6 T200 and couldn't be happier.

I am playing a combo set of ZX5/7.  4,5,6 are the 5s with rest of set being ZX7.  They are the real deal.  Specifically to answer your question they are super easy to hit and elevate.  I had given up on 4 irons but with the ZX5 it is back in the bag.  I am a high ball hitter and the Srixons do hit high but don't balloon on me.  I have game the 210s which are great irons but the feel (which I know is subjective) if better for me with the Srxions.

I used to dislike thick bottom irons too until I consistently starting hitting my ZX5 4 iron 210 yds off the deck.  I don't look at the bottom when I am swinging it anyway so I personally will take results over looks any day.  Certainly understand and respect how others feel about thick bottom irons (there are a lot thicker out there btw) but for me it's all about performance.

Agree.  For me, the ZX5 sole width is just fine.  I am a 6 index and chose to go with a full set of ZX5 - with a ZX4 4 iron.  Different strokes and all that but play what works.

Yes. The thinner sole and softer feel of the new Apex beats the ZX5 in this category IMO.

The ZX5 is more of a competitor to the Ping G425. The i210 is an iron played on Tour — like the ZX7.

That's why golf equipment is so weird DC. When I tested irons and chose the ZX5's the other iron I was testing and considering was the new Apex. I thought the Srixon's felt softer. You can't go wrong with either one.

I was a PING guy for years until I got on the Srixon bandwagon.  They are fantstastic. PINGS are great too, but just like Srixons.

The ZX5s have a thicker sole than the 565s. But it doesn't matter with the v-sole.  I play in Texas where this time of year is nothing but thin dormant Bermuda and they have been just fine.

Agree on comments about thinner sole but honestly not that much thinner.  My experience with feel was different and I actually prefer the feel of the X5s.  And feel with X5s beats Pings imo.

I just picked up a set of zx7 irons coming from apex pro dots and these irons are just so easy to hit and for me the v sole is so much better in the turf then the apex which has a narrow sole but is too rounded for me.

I got fitted on Monday for the first time, and the ZX5’s not only blew every other 2021 iron out of the water for me, but it’s also the smoothest and best feeling iron I’ve ever hit...period!

They’re so good to me that I put in my order for a set of 5-PW despite having to wait 4-6 weeks and not having irons while I wait because I sold my P770’s...and yet I’m still totally Ok with it!

You are scaring me lol that was a big leap but... its intriguing. Must be awsome irons.

Haha! Yup, it was a big leap alright. Just hope they’ll end up coming more quickly than 4-6 weeks.

In the meantime while I wait, I’m going to try an interesting experiment. Rather than buy a full backup set of irons, I picked up a P790 7-iron, so will try practicing and gaming with a D, 3H, 3 DI, 7i, GW, PW, LW...how’s that for gapping, Lol?

Wouldn’t argue with that. Neither of them feel as good as the V6, we both know.

Have had 5-7 in the ZX5s and 8-PW in the ZX7s since Christmas time. If I had my time again I would have just got ZX5s through out the set. For me there is zero drawback with the easier set.

Call me crazy but I prefer the feel of the ZX5 over the ZX7 as well 🤷🏻‍♂️

Good to know, thanks for the feedback.

Yeah, I see a few WRX’rs comparing the ZX5 to P790 or Apex etc, but to me the ZX5 looks and feels a lot more like a player’s iron and were most similar to my previous ‘17 P770’s...but better.

I thought the ZX7 looked a lot more blade-like (I’ve also gamed blades), and for me the ZX5 gave me a lot more confidence over the ball and are super fun and easy to hit!

I've heard of quarter, half, and full swing -- I think you'll have to dial in every hour on the clock face from about 7 around to 2 on that 7i 😀

Haha...yup, no doubt!

My range of shot-making ability with the Hybrid, Driving Iron, 7-iron, and GW are going to be off the charts after that 4-6 weeks...I might not even need the rest of the set, Lol! 😉
