Question for the equipment experts! What’s the best way to take weight out of the putter head?

Recommended Posts

So I have a putter I’d like that’s 350g and I’d love for it to be a little lighter... I know I could make the grip heavier and essentially it would feel lighter, but I’d love to just literally make it 345 or 340g. Would drilling a hole like some people do with wedges work? Or someone told me you could many file it down? (Sounds like that would take forever)

Thanks for the help!

This was discussed recently. You can try counter balance but that will increase the overall weight of the putter. you can always put on a lighter shaft and heavier grip to counter balance but keep the weight down. If you just want the head weight to 340g then sending it out to get weight ports drilled out will do the job.

Depending on the putter, you could also sand down the sole, make the cavity deeper, or just cut off a portion of the back of it.

This or all. Sand sole down, deeper cavity and even remill the face or go smooth face. One of those or all of those can probably get you at least 10-15g I would imagine depending on how aggressive you want to get

What putter is it?

Thanks guys. It’s a strokes gained rm4 I bought of here. It’s great, got great feel, I’m just picky and would love it to be lighter... I think sanding in might be the way to go... do you need a sanding machine or will a lot of elbow grease with some sand paper on the sole work?

I mean you can sand it by hand but it will take forever to get any amount of weight change. I would recommend somebody like Ken flanagan and have him get it exactly to the weight you want while still retaining cog etc. Not sure how much of a difference a few more grams taken off in the toe will matter then in heel etc etc

I’ve seen pictures of a similar putter (before and after) with the toe and heel slightly shaved off and hand softened to remove almost this same amount of weight while maintaining perfect balance. I wouldn’t try to do this yourself unless you know what you’re doing. The guy who did the work in the pics I saw is highly experienced.

Many years ago I stumbled upon this custom ‘Mr. B’ while browsing eBay. I recognized the neck as a potential Mannkrafted creation. Purchased the putter with little information. Turned out that it had spent time in Lamont’s skilled hands.  The head was heavier than I would have preferred (380+ grams). I had commissioned another putter from Lamont and asked if he would shave some weight off of this head. He was kind enough to take on the project. Shaved down the sole and softened the bumpers. Dropped 10+ grams. You can also see the ‘pull cuts’ he previously added (both of different depths). Could be a nifty way to remove the weight you desire.
