Maltby TSW wedge

Recommended Posts

I feel like I’ve read some reviews here but maybe they were buried in the 50 some page thread on maltby TS2.  I’m curious and hoping that there are thoughts on the TSW wedges from maltby.  I’m currently playing mizuno MP R-12 and s18 but I’ve put TS1 irons from maltby into play and the gapping on my wedges is off now.  Looking at a 54 and 58 but before hitting the purchase button hoping to get some ideas or comparisons to other wedges on feel, look at address, offset or appearance of offset, head size that sort of thing. Maltby isn’t very good with their photography.

Thanks in advance for anything!

My brother plays TSW's and had a hole-in-one last year. I will call him tonight and ask if he will review them.

He currently plays the Maltby TS1 and used to be a Cleveland 588 guy.

Ok that’d be great thanks!

I have the TS1 as well and the 54 degree TSW. It looks like they bent a 52 strong as there is a bit more offset than in my Vokey 60. Head size is smaller than Cleveland Zip Core or Vokey. The grind is nice as you can play straight or open up. Once I got used to the offset look, I really like it.

Yeah thats the kind of thing I’m curious about. I don’t mind some offset and I know sometimes it’s just the transition from hosel to blade that makes it look like a lot. Does it flow pretty well from the TS1 set into the TS wedges? Or does it give the appearance of more than the set gw?

Thanks

Hmm I’ve got the 54 and 58 TSWs, they don’t strike me as having much offset.

I think some players are used to seeing some wedges that have basically "zero" offset, or really close to it.  And some are really sensitive to seeing something that has...lets say 1-1.5 millimeters more than they are used to

I play the 50 and 56. The 50 is a 52 bent strong, so it has a touch of offset compared to the 56, but slots in nicely next to my MP18 MMC PW.  The grid is kind of like an exaggerated wider sole M grind, which I love.  Full shots have great turf interaction, and they easily get through sand and rough.  Easy to play open face shots. User- friendly bounce.  I highly recommend them to anyone who will listen to me lol.  I have them paired with DG S400's.

The chart says-

MA0313specs.jpg

That's all over the map for offset, does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to it; but in the narrative section below the chart, says:

A squared "tour rolled" leading edge and minimal .040" offset frames the golf ball at address for easy alignment and improved confidence.

Clear as mud!

The 50, 54, and 58 are the 52, 56, and 60 bent strong, with .04" offset extra from the bending.

Ok.  So they really have 3 wedges and are saying they have 6.  🤔

Not sure why it bothers me, but it does.  I suspect more will buy as advertised vs. going through the extra steps of ordering a wedge bent 2* strong if they only stocked and advertised the 3 lofts.  Bottom line if I ordered a new wedge and it came marked from the bending I'd be making a call.  Feels dishonest to me....and not sure I even believe it.  What happens when someone wants a 50 bent to 48?  They are then going past the 2* stated bending limit they have.

Can someone else verify this?

Wouldn't it be the 56 bent strong?

Also, is it stamped 54?

They're all stamped with the actual loft. My 50 says 50. They're also finished I guess after bending- there are no marks of any sort.  Being forged with long wedge hosels I wouldn't think an extra 2 degrees would bother them

Seems like a lot of extra labor. I'd love to know the economics of it and how much per wedge they saved by doing it this way vs. forging the other lofts; as well as how much per it would have been to offer 3 lofts!

Looks like a bunch of em are on backorder, so it's selling!  Have a great weekend!

The TSW is a great wedge, IMO. I've been gaming a 54 and 58 for over a year now. Currently, I only have the 54, bent to 56, in the bag. That's just me trying something new in the wedge setup.

They only have 3 wedges, and those 3 are bent to make the other 3 wedges. That is why the bounce and offset are all over the place. I would love to have a 58* with higher bounce, but I think the 56* bent to 58* with 14 degrees of bounce is too much. It's a simple lineup but the wedges perform, look good, and I enjoy the sole, wider with a lot of relief.

Plus, the new "raw" finish coming out looks good too.

Never noticed any marks when I ordered mine. I suspect they are bent before finishing, but I am not sure. I would reach out to JimY at golfworks. I'm sure he will give you the rundown.

The TS iron models have a really good sole design, that's what draws me to the TSW wedge.  Although I ended up with the STi2 over the TS models, I prefer a slightly wider sole with a bit of leading edge relief.  No sharp leading edges for me.  The TS2 was amazing through the turf.

I've had TS1 since March 2020. They're a good performer. They don't check all the boxes in the looks department, but I got over it. That is just a personal thing.

The manufacture that made these wedges started with 50, 54 and 58 degrees wedges. They adjusted the 50 to create the 52. They adjusted the 54 to create the 56 and adjusted the 60 to create the 58. This is why the offset move around.

So if I’m reading this correctly (it’s a little confusing but I’m assuming he meant the 58 was bent to 60) the 58 can be bent to 56?
TIA,

I copied and pasted the verbiage from a Golfworks question, but I believe you are correct as the offset on the 60 is less than the 58 and the bounce on the 60 is 8 degrees.  Typically they can bend 2 degrees.

Awesome. Tysm. That’s what I thought as well. Just gonna stop messing around and order a couple.
