Best wedges of 2021: Discussion thread

I still really like my scratch 1018 wedges I picked up. Nice and heavy swingweight without having to use tip weights or anything like that

BEST lists are useful since they’re search-bait. Wedges may be better served with sub-categories though IMO.

BEST for partial shots - Vokey SM8. Their array of lofts and grinds are obviously unparalleled.
BEST for full shots - Cleveland CBX2. In good part because they aren’t wedges in the classic sense. The reduction in spin and distance fall off is useful to the majority of players in any case.

BEST sand wedge -

Ping Eye2’s. Still making bunker shots easier for the average player.

Vokey D grind. The best mix of dedicated sand profile that remains useful for a variety of other shots and lies.

Driver - SIM2 MAX / Ventus Blue 5S

FW - SIM2 MAX / Ventus Blue 6S

Hybrid - SIM2 MAX / Ventus Blue 7S

Irons - ZX5 / C-Taper Lite S

Wedges - SM9 50/08 56/10 60/04

Putter - Odyssey Ai-One Milled #7 T

Have two MD5 Jaws 54* and 60* on the way with S400 shafts.  54* is S grind and the 60* is the new T grind.  Can't wait to try them out.

What is the closest retail grind to the one Phil uses? Gets hit some help for bunker shots but when he lays it open it doesnt add bounce?

I have a Rotex 3, Low Bounce currently and looking to tweak my setup when I upgrade but really want to be able to lay a low bounce L wedge open without adding bounce...

T or low bounce K probably. When grinds get this “targeted” for lack of a more positive term, it’s very much in your best interest to be able to demo them in the conditions you’ll be using them in. I attended the Vokey fitting fair and what came out as best for me was not what I anticipated going in. Just my experience...

as a somewhat relevant aside... I’m not a Callaway junkie but I’ve purchased and played both the Jaws and Jaws forged wedges. While the forged are a beautiful looking wedge, I think the standard MD5 Jaws are a better product for myself. I’m able to produce consistent and higher spin numbers with the standard and I think they feel almost as delicious on full shots.

Thanks! Looks like the Zipcore Low also has a bit of all round relief for opening it up?

I gamed a bunch of different Vokey’s over the last year testing out grinds, different loft pairings/gaps.  Did the special edition black head/shaft ones, traditional finish, sm5/6/7/8 and ultimately decided they’re not for me.

Ended up getting a set of barely (I mean barely) used Jaws in 50/56/60 for $200 with DG TI s400 shafts - all 10 degree bounce - and I’m really digging them.

The Vokey’s felt oddly heavy and - for lack of better scientific term - “clicky” and hard.  Even well struck shots never felt good.

While the Jaws were a major improvement vs. the Vokey’s for me, I’m still playing around with the right wedge setup.  The wedges are really the last piece of the bag I’m not 100% sold on but I’m feeling more confident being even 80% sold on the Jaws - because way better feeling for me than the Vokey’s.

I think if you want the best feeling wedges out there, go with Mizuno. If you want the most solid feeling and consistent distance, SM8 is hard to beat. Just my opinion. I know there are a ton of great options out there but for me, Vokey just always performs the best. I’ve tried a little of everything over the 30 years I’ve been playing and always go back to good old Vokeys. Just like I always go back to Mizuno irons!🤣

-Taylormade BRNR 11.5* set at 9.5* Ventus Red TR 7X playing 44.25”
-Mizuno STz 230 hybrid 16* set at 15* Ventus Blue 8X

-Mizuno STz 230 hybrid 19* Ventus Blue 9X

-Mizuno JPX 923 Forged4&5, Tour 6-PW Project X LS 6.5
-Titleist Vokey SM9 50F set to 51*, 56D, & 62M set to 61*

-Mizuno M-Craft OMOI Type 1 Blue Putter
