Afterwards I could not help thinking how many 'we did not see it' breaches had been overlooked by this guy and likes of him. Even in a friendly competition the best of the day should win and not the one who had most breaches overlooked.

It also a funny line that people draw, they someone decide what penalties matter and what don't. I have to assume that line slides over time.

This is a funny topic. We have an inter company tourney twice a year. My buildings best golfers vs another locations best golfers. Based off of ranking I get paired against the head of the other location. This guy is three rings above me. I'm watching him mark, lift, clean and then replace his ball lined up for every shot. Like... I literally thought it was a joke. 3 holes in and he's replacing his lie on every shot like he's putting. 

 

So its 4 four balls out and we get backed up on a par three. My boss at the time, in the group behind us, is a PGA instructor and a complete ***hole. I loved this guy. We finally have a chance to chat and I tell him whats going on. The cheater is three rings above me and 2 rings above my boss. My boss didn't flinch. "Hey Mike... you know it's not Lift Clean and Place, right? I hear you do that 1 more time and you're pairing looses."

Pretty sure I would have walked through his line, jingled my change, stood uncomfortably close, passed gas in his general direction and done everything else I could do to make the rest of the day as miserable as possible for all involved. Win, lose or draw, this would have been a pleasant day for the jackwagon who needs to win at all cost.

Why was he not penalized with 3 strokes? Both you and your boss knew about the infractions and you let them go???

This reminded me of a conversation I had long ago with a corporate lawyer of a large multi-national forest products company I worked for at the time.

Ethics were becoming a matter of serious attention in the 90’s and companies were scrambling to get policy in place. Once posted, we were given copies. I phoned the call # to speak with someone on a clear violation by a senior manager. The lawyer, verbatim, I sh*t you not: “ Well, you know ethics are like a ruler, you can go so far one way and not fall off the end or so far the other way and not fall off. Everything in between is interpretation”.

 

I think her comment has infused itself into society.
