Background noise on CBS PGA Championship broadcast.

Why can’t they filter background noise I assume drone noise from PGA golf screenings on cbc Kayo etc. should be that hard.

or turn up mics of commentators which will eliminate most of background noise.

LOL, I was shocked to hear the sounds of the surf while watching the action at Pebble, and seagulls! I agree there should be a filter, haha, but not for that stuff.

I was shocked at how often I heard loud leaf blowers in the background. You'd think there would be a blanket ban on using those around the nearby homes during the tournament.

Me too.  The golf course outfit controls those peoples' lives on their own property for heaven's sake --- they can't even publish pics out of their $12 million homes of the ocean unless the sun is shining, their dogs have to be trained to use indoor facilities, sounds of lovemaking have to be kept to below a maximum decibel level if they live within 400 feet of a green - how did they forget the leaf blower restrictions?  Somewhere along the course on Sunday, "Honey, a leaf blower is at it, they'll never hear us!"

I think a lot of it is dubbed because it sometimes makes no sense in the context of what's going on where they are televising.  I guess they think the Phoenix Open is worth copying (where the crowd noise is loud, real and constant), but it's not worth it, esp. if what they select makes the crowd sound like its a beer hall in Munich.

I don't think they dub in phony sounds anymore. There are hundreds of mics all over the course and an engineer in the trailer controls which ones you're hearing at any given moment. His job is to unmute the correct mics to match the action you're seeing on the screen. That doesn't mean they might not have a mic somewhere on Pebble Beach facing the ocean and collecting background that can be blended in at any point in the broadcast.

I attended my first pro golf event a few weeks ago, the International Crown LPGA event at Harding Park.  We spent a good part of Thursday parked at the 7th green.  I would walk down to the landing zone for tee shots, then walk back up to the green.  As a spectator, it was near impossible to hear anything going on, if you weren't five feet from the players.  I happened to be the only human standing just off the right fairway when Nelly drove her ball a bit wide right.  I was "this" close to her and her caddie, and could hear them.  Lilia Vu was about 30 feet away, and I couldn't hear anything.

While on the 7th green, we couldn't hear much at all of the players and caddies interacting.  Could barely even hear the official/scorer walking with them, who announced the scores (it was match play.)  "Team USA wins the hole, goes one up in the match."  Barely audible.

We watched the last few holes that afternoon on TV, and subsequent days.  Man do those mic booms work!  We were watching the same players on the 7th green and you could hear all of their interactions, and the same scorer we couldn't hear the day before, was loud and clear announcing the scores.

Which takes me back to the god awful sound engineering work on this past weekends PGA Championship airing.  They are trying to create a WM type vibe.  so they point mics at the crown off the greens and tee boxes, and crank everything up to 11.  So we get to hear the obnoxious brodawgs yelling 7 rows deep at a tee box.  Turn that down about 50-75%, and it still would have been plenty of volume to generate the kind of excitement people want to see at majors.

edit: Nelly so close

It seems to be the thing on telecasts of all sports.  Every once in a while they accidentally mute the noise and you realize how nice it could be.

I think it's noisy because they can.  They have all the mics and the producers nerd out on it.  It's stupid and annoying.

What's funny is Augusta piping in bird sounds while other tournaments have abundant natural bird calls going on throughout with no fakery needed. Can get a little wild, though. I think it was during the final leg of the Cali swing this year that there was a certain species screaming nonstop with the most jarring "tweets" I've ever heard. Made sparrows sound like dulcet tones from on high.

In recent news, seems like they're being overly cautious in the muting out at Colonial after all the fbombs that made it on the air during the PGA.

The thing that gets me is it doesn't have to be that way.  Golf Channel and NBC manage to broadcast golf without having the background turned up to 11.

IMO whoever is in charge of it at CBS thinks that the golf fan wants it loud like at a (insert team sport) game.  I don't and I don't think most golf fans do.  I may be wrong.

During Jim Nance’s farewell to Verne Lundquist, they played the music so loud I couldn’t hear Verne.  There’s something out of whack in their production.

Numerous times during the broadcast the background orchestra music drowned out the announcing. Time to fire sound a few producers, I cane believe a guy sitting at the controls say's " sounds good crew, lets keep it at that volume "
