Women's All Pro Tour (WAPT)

My home club is hosting a WAPT event for the 3rd year. For those not familiar with the WAPT, it is the Official Qualifying Tour for the LPGA's Symetra Tour. The top two finishers each week get exemptions into a Symetra Tour event and the top 5 points finishers at the end of the year get exemptions into Stage 2 of Tour Qualifying. Several players who have played on the WAPT are now playing regularly on the Symetra Tour and one, Sarah White, has won on the Symetra Tour. And both Yealimi Noh and Matilida Castren played on the WAPT.

Play got underway yesterday with 93 players in the field. Included are numerous players who played in the recent NCAA women's championship and the ANWA at Augusta and have since turned pro. Olivia Mehaffey, from Northern Ireland who rose to as high as the 10th ranked amateur before turning pro, is in the field as well as 16 year old amateur Alexa Pano. Mariel Galdiano, from Hawaii who played at UCLA, is also in the field. At age 22, she has already played in 4 Women's U S Opens. She qualified for her first one in 2011 when she only 12 years old and played in it as 13 year old!

Keep an eye on this tour as it appears to attracting more and more up and coming players especially out of the college ranks and is growing. The field size here has gone to 40 or so the first year to 60 something last year and now to over 90 this year. And that's been the case with pretty much all the tournaments on the schedule as the purses have also grown accordingly.

There is a fair amount of foreign players here.  Not sure how many are based in U.S. but just holding different passport though.  I have been checking in every now and then to see how Genevieve Ling from KL, MY has been doing (@JungleJimbo posted her story before).

Anyways, hope the tournament is a success and that some of these players can develop further/advance to the next level.

as 16 year old amateur Alexa Pano.

Have fun.

Pano has been on a downward spiral for some time....she is now 97th in WAGR.

It's not scientific....based on past results....I feel a gal needs to be in the top 5 WAGR for a while....to have any impact on the LPGA....assuming they do qualify for membership and keep their card for more than a year...obviously there are exceptions.

I hope Pano has some private investors....even so....gotta believe dad (Rick) is quite in debt travelling to events....but there are many families in the same boat...not just golf.

I spoke with the parents of a Symetra tour pro...they took out a 2nd mortgage.

Jesus. Are they for real? Regardless whether the ruling is correct, that’s the hand you got dealt with. Move on.

They travelled all the way there just to WD...just let the kid play.

Pano is still so young...but hopefully she can break away a bit from dad sometime .....if indeed she has a LPGA future.

Some parent/child golf relationships just aren't good.

Well, first group is fixing to tee off this morning and I'm fixing to head out there and watch a little bit of golf before I have to do my "volunteer" job. I'll be watching the final group for a few holes since one of them played for my Texas Longhorns and one of my friends is caddying for her.

@North Texas: Enjoy, and thanks for sharing these updates! I’m hoping Genevieve Ling (T32 after R2) does well... please say hi to Gen if you can!

Genevieve Ling:

..p/s: Seems like the overnight leader Grace Kim (-12, leading by 6) is playing a different course/ game vs everyone else playing for 2nd place? Wow!!

Well, Grace Kim got the trophy but it got a little rocky for her. Goes out in a hum-hum 3 under 33 to increase her lead to 8 shots. Then on the back nine she has two bogeys, a double, a lost ball triple. one birdie, a two inch tap-in eagle, and wins by two.

She is remaining an amateur until after the US Am. She won the Australian Am earlier this year and wants try to add the US Am to it before turning pro.

All in all, a great week and thanks to you guys for indulging me in this thread. Wife and I are just huge fans of women's golf especially when we get a chance to be actively involved in some way.

Final results.

Ohio gals had a good showing, too!
