Scotty Pro Platinum Mil-Spec Refinish

My gamer is a scotty 340g Mil Spec and I love it. It was refinished before I bought it with what looks like a carbon refinish. If you can see from the pictures in direct sunlight, there is some beautiful patina coming through. So I have a few questions. Has the pro platinum finish been stripped already? I'm thinking about sending it out to BOS for a patina oil refinish but I'm not sure how that finish looks since the website's photos aren't the best. Or if anyone has any other recommendations for refinishes.

also the shaft that it came with is a matte black graphite shaft. just wondering if the weight and flex of that affects putting at all. Normally I played with a steel shaft putter before gaming this and it does feel a little different. Not sure if that is all mental or not

Looks like the Pro Plat has been stripped and that is the raw carbon steel.

 

If you're used to one of the original cameron shafts, those are some of the softest putter shafts. So yours is likely stiffer than that (different feel for sure)

Thanks for the information! I haven't been oiling the putter since I thought it still had a plating, but I will start now. This is actually my first scotty so I haven't used the original shaft, but I might try out a few different shaft options this winter.

It does look like the Pro Plat finish has been removed (which is an extra cost to perform at BOS) so you could send this in to them for whatever finish you want.  Looks like it's in good condition as far as dings / scratches are concerned so you shouldn't lose much weight at all.  I would weigh the head prior to sending it in to see how much weight was lost from the first refinish.  Mil Spec's are known for weighing more than their advertised weight so you should be fine.
I have never seen one of these in oil can.  Might be cool!

Looks kinda like its been lightly media blasted to me, like you can almost see traces of the pro plat finish still in the little corners where the media didn't quite get to. I like the look as is, control the rate of patina by treating it with some kind of oil/protectant periodically.

BOS all the way. They’ve refinished two mil-specs for me and both turned out incredible. Did one in oil can / patina oil and the other in black oxide. Bunch of pics below trying to show the finish from different angles and lighting.

Here’s one BOS just did for me. Triple black oxide.

Weight before was 346

weight after stripping finish and clean up 343

They did not remill the face.

Now after looking at that oil can …….I should have done oil can 😫. It looks great !

Wow that oil can looks great! I'm tempted to make mine look exactly like that now. Have you gamed it? and how does that affect the look of the putter?

Beautiful putter. If you want a black oxide or oil can finish, BOS is the only place you should be sending it.  There are a lot of great putter refinishers out there but they are the absolute best for those two finishes (especially oil can).

Yup, I’ve gamed it a few times. It’s a raw finish on soft carbon steel, so it’s very tough to keep pristine if you plan on using it. Couple of small scratches on the sole of the putter from sand on greens. Most important thing is to keep it dry and oiled. Never use it when raining/wet/dewy, wipe down after every hole before it goes back in the cover, and get a silicone cloth to keep it oiled.

Mil Spec's are great to refinish because they tend to weigh more than their advertised weight to begin with.  That way if there is any weight loss due to sanding down dings and scratches, or remilling the face, they will still have good weight to them.  I have 3 Mil Spec's and I had 1 of my 33/350g heads refinished in Pro Platinum and it still weighed 351g when it came back.
I agree with deep18's statement above in regards to BOS.  If you want oil can or black oxide, I wouldn't send it anywhere else but them.  They did the original oil can and black ox finishes for Cameron back in the day and they absolutely do the best oil can finish in the business.  However, I don't believe they do the Pro Platinum finish any longer, and neither does Cameron - which is very sad.  It was a great finish for carbon putters because it made them much more durable.

Oil can finishes are one of my favorites. BOS has some nice variations - chocolate patina, 3x oil can, 2x oil can, all satin etc.

If I have a custom shop stamp on my Mil-Spec in the cavity and I get the pro platinum stripped to refinish will I lose the stamp?
