Chef likes to break my balls each year he works the Rocket Mortgage tournament because he says he worries he will get mugged at some point driving from the Detroit airport to the golf course. He travels through some rough parts of the city during his 38 mile drive. It is sad that metro Detroit has changed so much for the worse since I grew up there. The city and surrounding areas were alive and thriving when our family lived there in the 1960's thru the middle 70's. 

 

For the 5th year in a row Chef is in the Motor City cooking for Rickie.

Checking in from Lake Hartwell. Zero cell service and poor Wi-Fi but we have a lake and a boat so there’s that. Went fishing the last two days but have gotten skunked. Native American History in Detroit

Detroit occupies the contemporary and ancestral homelands of three Anishinaabe nations of the Council of Three Fires: the Ojibwe, Ottawa, and Potawatomi. Through the Treaty of Detroit, the Ojibwe, Ottawa, Potawatomi, and Wyandot tribes ceded the land now occupied by the city in 1807. Throughout Detroit’s history, members of these tribes have continued to contribute to the city’s development.  

During the early 1900s, many Native American families moved into homes along Michigan Avenue in Detroit.

Detroit was an important part of Pharmaceutical research.

 

Parke-Davis and Co. established the first pharmaceutical research lab in Detroit in the late 1800s. Their first building was located in downtown Detroit, but by 1873, they were getting too big to remain in downtown.

The company moved its lab and manufacturing facilities east to near Belle Isle. Between 1891 and 1946, Parke-Davis and Co. built 26 buildings on their campus. In its heyday, Parke-Davis and Co. was one of the leading pharmaceutical research institutions in the world. It helped make Detroit the national center for the growing pharmaceutical industry.   

 

Detroit was a major alcohol importer during Prohibition.  

 

With the passing of the 18th Amendment in 1919, the sale, consumption, and manufacturing of alcohol became illegal. However, that didn’t stop people from drinking it. Detroit was strategically positioned to prosper from Prohibition. With Windsor just across the Detroit River, Detroiters had easy access to alcohol. (At the time, Canada has lax alcohol laws). It’s estimated that 75 percent of the alcohol smuggled into the US during Prohibition crossed the border at the Windsor-Detroit funnel.

 

 

Detroit was crucial in the WW ll effort. 

 

With its booming automobile industry and sprawling plants, Detroit was the stronghold of US wartime production. The city only had 2 percent of the US population, but it produced 10 percent of the material for the war. Chrysler produced 25,000 Sherman, Grant, and Patton tanks at its Warren assembly plant. At one point, the plant made 1,000 units per month. Ford Motor Co. made 8,500 B-24 Liberator bombers at its Willow Run factory.

HH was founded in Taylor, just outside Detroit.  Our nearest Hungry Howie's is in Raleigh about 40 minutes away.  We lived in Wixom, MI for 3 years in the early 90's and HH and Buddy's were our go-to pizzas!  Haven't had either since but we'll have to make HH happen sometime when we are in the Raleigh area.

Thanks for sharing the article P48.  I admit I did not about each region but I found the piece about The Refuge in Mississippi interesting.  They have chosen the Longleaf Tee System which utilizes a more varied range of tee boxes which in theory should fit a broader range of golfers.  For example, a 5400 yard forward tee is not a good fit for many folks and a newer 4200 yard box could prove to make the game more fun (and quicker) for many.  Longleaf is a club in Pinehurst which is owned by the same people who own US Kids Golf.

While I am not as excited about watching another hurting tournament. I will say Kudos to Touch and his fond memories of a city and town of child hood memories. As a sports town there were very few highlights but the memories which were made I am sure offered a long lasting mark on the hearts and souls of many Lions, Redwings, Pistons, and of course those Detroit Tigers fans and the 84 Series to recall when the Padres and Goose Gossage refused to walk Kirk Gibson and Gibby made them pay!

Thanks doc.  Don't forget the Tigers also won the series in 1968.

 

His is the voice I listened to on my portable AM transistor radio for so many games growing up.

Well I need to outdo that Gotterup pick from last week and go contrarian once more

Thus I am taking the much maligned guy with the Puma hat Mr Rickie Fowler

Let's see who else is playing in Detroit Rock City?  Bob Seger is second my fave Detroit native rocker, because I have moved on to Jack White and his first break through band with Meg White, The White Stripes, he makes you want to listen at full volume.  

 

I guess I will conclude this post with a last pick before heading out to Fairfax Va courthouse to request records of all my past misgivings so I can get my loveley bride to be a K1 Visa which is like trying to get into Harvard after you day dreamed in High School for 4 years, and then said oh yeah, my parents will cut me off if I don't fill out these application papers!
