Older game improvement irons for beginners

They’re not as forgiving as the G series, but they are still more forgiving than a lot of other brands of that age. If you’re a decent striker of the ball they may offer some growth for you. Meaning as you get better they’ll perform better and you can hold onto them for awhile. Some players I know kind of “grow out” of G series and end up going to i-series as they progress. They’re a great set of irons.

i20s are really nice.  They are not as forgiving as the G line, though.

Adams A7OS irons can be found pretty cheap and are great for a beginner. Check them out.

I'm a 16 handicap. In the last 6 years I have owned:  Titleist 712 AP1, 714 AP1, 716 AP1, PXG 0211, Mizuno  JPX-EZ, Hot Metal, Hot Metal 19, Ping Eye 2+, ISI BeNi, G, G25, i20, G, G400, S58, Callaway Steelhead XR Pro, and Srixon Z565.

 

Of that bunch, I like the Titleist 714, 716 and PXG 0211 best.

The "i" series irons are just a smidge less forgiving than the "G" series irons for the older models. The i10-15-20 sets still featured the progressive (slight) offset on the longer irons. I didn't play the 15's but between the i10 and 20's my handicap went from 10 to 4 over a 3 year period with the Pings. 

They're cast so won't quite get the "feel" of forged blades but sometimes the results are worth the tradeoff. jmo

That is super helpful actually. I would consider myself in the game improvement category. I had played on and off a few times before, but I consider last year my first real season as I played at least once a week. I was usually shooting around a 20 or below and expect to be in the mid teens this season. I am strictly looking at pings now so I may go with an I series. I really like the i20's right now.

Well, I've had my G20s since 2012 and can't kick 'em out of my bag,,,,,,,,,,, though I have tried.

 

I will admit though the look of mine isn't for everybody and if I was recommending a fairly recent G series iron it's be the G25 as they look far more "normal"; at least to me.

 

Being you're only in year 2 and a 20 I'd personally go for the most forgiving iron I like the look of and enjoy the early journey. You've got plenty of time to progress and move into a more advanced(?) club.
