Hole in One - Do you count them if it was on a Par 3 Course??

I have none actually lol

I see it like this. Hole in ones are fun, and rare. Why try to rain on someone's parade because of a technicality? Just seems pretty crummy to me.

Not in disagreement with you.  But the hole-in-one maker needs to have some discretion in how he/she brags about it.  I have one legit hole-in-one.  And 2 on a second practice ball.  205 and 155 yard holes.  Sometimes I will mention it, watch a mouth drop and then quickly qualify it.  I personally do not count those as holes-in-one.

I've played only one par 3 course, and some of those holes are only 60-70yds.  I personally wouldn't count one of those, but if it's a legit 100yd+ hole, you bet.

I once shot a 58 on a par 3 course.  Does that count for anything?

What's the difference between a par 3 on a par 3 course versus a par 3 on a course that also happens to have par 4's and 5's?

To argue that hole in ones only count if that hole is in the vicinity of par 4's and par 5's is a ridiculous argument.

You get to groove your par 3 shots for 18 holes.  It begins to be like hitting on a range.  We'll give you up to 6 par 3 holes on an 18 hole regulation course.

So the qualifier is how many par 3's are on the course? Because you get to "groove your par 3 shots"?

Does that mean that a hole in one on a course with 4 par 3's matters more than a course that has 8 par 3's?

Yes on the 4.  8 doesn't count... not regulation.  What's par?  68?

I think that today, with the ability of the average hacker to buy a 12 HC with trampoline drivers, range finders, and non shank irons,  that we can "grow the game" with another HIO rules change. "Inside the Leather" should count as a Hole in One for a 20+HC.  2 on a par three and getting a stroke?  HIO. 😆

I just can't find the reasoning or logic behind your perspective.

It would make slightly more sense if all par 3's were exactly the same, but they aren't. Not even close. 18 holes to "get your groove" doesn't make any more sense on a course full of par 3's as it does for a "regulation" course.

... Either DMM is playfully trolling all the HIO threads or ... or ...  I guess I don't have an "or". 🤪 Obviously any HIO is a HIO by definition so what a stranger on a golf forum thinks is irrelevant. Golf is difficult. Every swing is different. I am a + index, have two Albatross and play 4-5 times a week year round. I have never had a HIO. The Golf Gods did think it would be humorous to allow me to spin a 9 iron off an island green, re-tee and hit it in the hole for a par, and I have slam dunked two tee shots that both popped back out of the cup (that I had to repair) but still no HIO's.

... She-yit if a kid hopped a fence at a private club a beat up old ball he found, teed up between the tee markers and hit it in the cup, that would be a HIO in several different ways! Some people see the glass as half full, some as half empty and some on this thread would say "Hey! Who stole my water?"

  • 2 weeks later...

I do not count mine from a Par 3 course.  (8 real ones, one “Par three course” one).  The Par Three course one was as a kid.  Mom would drop us off on a Saturday Morning and pick us up in the afternoon.  If the course was clear and Mom was late, we would play 1 and 18 over and over again.  That was how I made my first Hole in one.  I consider it akin to a driving range hole in one.

It was the late 60’s.  We did not know how dangerous the world was yet.  Sometimes we would bicycle to the course.  Without helmets!

Parents knew we would come home if we got hungry.  If for some reason we did not come home, we had plenty of other siblings since my parents practiced they Rhythm method…..

Nothing quite like a golf course as a babysitter...

... A golf store comes close. My ex pard was a Golfsmith manager and their putting green had a nice little waterfall. Moms used to drop off their kids, go shopping and come back an hour later. Of course some kids behaved and others came close to getting a police visit. People wonder why stores keep Camerons/Bettinardi's locked up and turn off hitting bay LM's and these kids are one of the reasons. Having an 8 yr old that doesn't play golf spraying balls all over the store or clanging a new Scotty off the rocks was a nightmare.

If it's anything but a pitch and putt course (i.e. holes are like 50 yards and in) I would say it counts. Guess my litmus test would be, if the hole is of a length you'd reasonably expect to find on a regulation course, count it.

In which case, I suppose the yardage may vary depending on the tees one traditionally plays from (Jr, Sr, etc).

I've had two. One freshman year of HS in a match on a regulation course. Another right after college at an executive style course I was managing (par 3s and 4s). I count both.
