When/why is the exceptional score differential used?

My original comment was simply to the effect that I much preferred the new term "demonstrated ability" to the previous "potential" (having or showing the capacity to become or develop into something in the future) - which, as you implied, cannot possibly be measured; only guessed at.

 

ANY score is a demonstration of my "ability". My WORST score is a "demonstration of my ability"; not a very good one but a demonstration nevertheless.

For hopefully the last time 😄… the "in the future" was literally the next round you played. Part of the reason you so disliked the word "potential" is that you seem to have misunderstood what they meant by that. They weren't talking about five years in the future, they always meant the next round, basically. Or the next few rounds. It wasn't so much measured as predicted — which is about all you can ask of a handicapping system.

 

I'm glad they changed the word so that you like it more.
