Tendency if trail hand too strong?

Let's say we are talking about average amateur golfers, so not people of tour level ability and tour level time commitment.

If the left hand is neutral to slightly strong, but the trail hand is really strong or very under the grip, what would the movement tendency tend to be? I recognize that someone can reroute the club and do anything from any grip position, but i'm asking what would the movement tendency to be.

My finding from my own observations on myself, it seems like when the trail hand is under, it seems to want to promote a more inside takeaway without some sort of re-routing. From there, either steep with a closed clubface or try to hold off the clubface from closing down along with some early extension and then miss both ways depending on timing.

Does this make sense?

I’ve seen the same as you’re talking about.  Strong right hand (right handed golfer) has a tendency to take it inside too much or almost flip it back and then come over the top and you can get that 2 way miss.  All depends on timing.

I have to watch out as I sometimes flip it inside (break the wrist almost) when it’s too strong.  I’m being more careful to be neutral or just a slightly stronger with the right hand.

Sounds eerily like me.  My typical miss is left with everything. I have the grip you describe and tend to also "grab" or overpower with the right hand near impact. And I fight a too inside path, both ways.

In my opinion ( worth nest to nothing ) the right palm mirrors the clubface.  Or the desired impact position.

if you have an underneath right hand , you need to start with an open clubface ( not ideal ) or turn your body so far out In front of it that you can’t possibly get it hooded to your path.  I personally think it makes much more sense to have a neutral right hand at address that matches the club face.  Then just return it to that spot on whatever path you need for the shape. Draw fade or straight.

all these adjustments off of square don’t make much sense if you think in math terms.

edit - I do adjust my grip stronger by a knuckle for a 45 inch driver.  It just seems to need that slight bit more to get square or slightly shut to path on the extremely long club.  If I do that with a pitching wedge it’s to hit a big hook to recover from trouble.

The right palm mirroring the clubface and facing the target is what i am moving toward. Feels like it makes my trail hand weak, but its probably not. With this grip, its the first time I felt what "releasing" the club feels like rather than the hold off move I have.

It’s weaker.  Not weak.

every one is different.  And different times have seen different fads with grip strength.  The one I describe is what works for me.  And I hit it both ways , and pretty darn straight . I think in 3 shot shapes.    And all you have to do from a neutral place is change the face at address and just barely  move the path in or out.

My tendencies if it gets too strong are inside takeaway, across the line at the top and then dump the right shoulder in transition to avoid a massive pull hook. This leads to early extension and anywhere from huge push to massive push-over draw depending on timing.

I actually had a previous instructor lead me down this route as he did all his students. I now reference him as the instructor who ruined my enjoyment of golf for 2 years!

Now, I play with a slightly strong top hand and neutral bottom hand. This fits my anatomy and natural shoulder internal/external rotational alignment but won’t suit everyone.

  • 1 year later...

Coming back to my thread from almost two years ago, still suffer from the same issue of letting my trail hand get too much under the grip. From there, i block or push slice everything.

Going to what i feel is a weak trail hand fixes a lot of those problems. However, that "weak" feeling trail hand is about the same positioning of the trail hand as with those molded training grips, so its probably closer to neutral.
