Odd fitter recommendation wedges

justcallmemoses

Recommended Posts

I play KBS $ taper 120 stiff iron shafts (fitted by Mizuno)

Went to buy wedges in a store recently and the fitter recommended Project X 5.5 115g shafts for my wedges.

Seems like KBS shafts are hard to get. Is this just a next best thing or just random suggestion?

The wedges in stock wedge was a dynamic gold spinner 115g and I found them too light

Golfworks has both .370 & .355 $ Taper S flex in stock right now. Did the fitter say why they recommended the PX 115 R flex for your wedges?

no reason just said to trust him for something to feel heavier and would check what’s in stock

Did you get to hit the wedges with those shafts in them, or did he literally just tell you to trust him in blindly ordering something?

didn’t hit them. Just to trust the blind ordering depending on what’s suitable in stock. I’m thinking project x is different feel to KBS?

If the stock DG 115gr shaft feels too light, I don't think the 115gr PX is going to solve that problem.  Most players will find the KBS $ and the PX to feel different.  The PX, even in a 5.5, will be stiffer in the tip than the KBS.  If you like the feel of the KBS $, I would pick up some KBS $ or even KBS Tours.  Mizuno may not have them but they are available elsewhere.

Depends on which KBS model, but I haven't found anything in their line up that feels like PX.  I wouldn't just go blindly with what the guy recommended without trying the PX first.

This isn't a fitting.  This is an employee trying to make a sale.  Unless you like experimenting on the course and are ok with likely having to reshaft later, this sounds to me like a bad idea.

Guys, chill.  Put the pitchforks and torches down for a second.  The fitter is not that far off.  They are fairly similar.  What they were likely trying to do was simulate what a lot of people suggest to do in wedges, which is go softer for more feel.  The PX is stiffer in the handle and the tip section than the KBS, hence, why they probably recommended going down a half flex.  Now, where they messed up is you typically go HEAVIER AND SOFTER, but there are a lot of PX guys that drop down a weight class in their wedges, a famous guy named Rory is one of them.

Calm yourselves, breathe deeply, and chill.  All is well.  The OP would likely be more than fine going with these and would not suddenly enter Chunksville, Shanktown County if they did this.

I can't quite get my head around one 115g shaft feeling too light and a different 115g shaft not feeling too light. I know the balance points might vary and make the swingweights a point or two different but it's two shafts with approximately the same static weight.

IMO, there's nothing wrong with 115g shafts in wedges and there's nothing wrong with 115g PX shafts in wedges. But if that weight doesn't suit you, then don't even consider spending a bunch of money on wedges with them (unless you can give them a thorough trial first, unlikely with wedges). These wedges are too expensive to just make a random purchase you don't really expect to like.

What part of OP's "I found them too light" did you not understand?

EI profiles are great if you're into that sort of thing but shaft fitting starts with getting the weight and balance right. The most wonderful EI profile ever created by the hand of man doesn't matter if a club (and a WEDGE, no less) feels too light or too heavy when you swing it.

I understood it fine, thanks.  Shaft weight has little to do with feeling too light or heavy unless it is wildly ill fit; and we can logically assume if 120g in the irons worked well, 115 is not wildly far off, is it? In these situations, it is usually the overall combined static weight that feels that way (too heavy/light).  By process of elimination we can safely assume the OP is talking about the Jaws wedges, which are supposed to be D3.  We have no idea what the static weight and SW was of the best fitted iron was either.  So to say it was too light does not necessarily mean the shaft was too light, it just means exactly as they said, the club felt light.  Does the OP need 0.5" over length and they only swung standard length?  That could be the answer right there without getting too uppity about it all. Hell, you can take an X7 at 2" over length and throw 100g of counterbalance under an EVNRoll Gravity grip and you can transform the heaviest wedge in the world into something that "feels too light".  This is why fitting to a weight is such a tricky process, there are so many variables that contribute to this value and something that feels correct that are not always so obvious on the surface.

Now, I will direct you to the preceding sentence, where I stated:

So, IF the OP finds that the PX 5.5 is in fact unusable, even at the proper length, lie, and SW appropriate based on a sensical progression from the irons, then they should probably look to something else.  Some suggestions might be the KBS Hi-Rev 125 the $-Taper 125 S+ 8i shaft, a standard S200 wedge shaft, and so on.
