Miura vs Kyoei

GolfisLife1

Recommended Posts

I’ve owned multiple sets of Miura over the years. CB57, MB101, MC501 and now have the MC502.

im curious.  How does Kyoei compare to Miura in terms of feel, forgiveness and performance?

im thinking about buying a KK CB set or maybe MB.  Just hard to splurge when there’s almost nothing about them to read or watch on YouTube

I hate to admit it but I play a different set of irons probable once a week. I enjoy playing well with different sets.  In any event, I prob have 7 sets of miuras in my garage now.  mostly varying blades, BB, 001, TB, 501 etc to a cavity back I can't honestly remember as it was an impulse buy due to the sale price tag.

I also own the original KK MB Kyoei's.  They are the best by far and away.  Way smoother.  Way more forgiving.  No comparison at all.

I liked them so much, i ordered the newer version KK heritage from tourspec a couple of days ago.  I wanted 5-pw in the heritiage and a 4 iron in the dual wt's but tourspec said they would not break up sets even tho the dual wt 4 iron is ordered separately from the 'set'.  Goofy.

If I could do it all over, i would save thousands by owning just the Kyoei in the 'raw' finish and calling it a day.  Can't go wrong with kyoei "KK type of iron" series, old or new in my opinion.

I posted this the other day. Didn’t get any replies and went ahead on impulse and bought these.  They are a raw finish

A friend of mine is a Japan forging junkie. He loves his Miura and dabbled in Kyoei and Fourteen. He’s always said Kyoei is super underrated. I love my Fourteen clubs but my eye is starting to wander.

I’ve always heard great things about Kyoei. Primarily about them being softer. They seem to have more offset than I’d like so I’ve stuck with MCW MC501’s and have felt like they’re perfect.

Maybe on some models but I found Kyoei looking for irons with little to no offset. They have some models with the least amount of offset I’ve been able to find anywhere.

Offset on the Kyoei KK MB I had were minimal. In hindsight, I should’ve just learned to hit a straight ball. The clubs were beautiful.

this is the set of kk's i have.  exactly to the red paint.  I love the turf interaction with the bounce grind.

My new ones have the same grinds, a little different in the muscle back but to me, they are so close, it is hard to tell a difference.

I am headed to scottsdale in february and have a 'shaft fitting' with true spec out there to let them fit me for the shafts for this new set.  I spoke to the manager a few days ago.  He is great.  absolutely the way to go if anyone decides to go out there to play golf with a fitting on the side....

In any event, I am looking forward to the true spec golf experience.  They were insightful and friendly.  I asked specifically about increasing launch on my 4-5 irons and maybe 6 but keeping the launch window the same on the 7-pw on the new set.  Allen had good info.  I would recommend him to anyone.

I have some raw KK MBs (that were for sale if you check my post history) and have played MC501s as well.

they are night and day different. Miuras are dense, low pitched, solid.  Kyoei are much much softer, lighter sounding, higher pitched, with a delightful poof 💨 when you hit the (quite small) sweet spot. Despite the small “sound spot” the Kyoeis were extremely forgiving all over the face.

despite the playability the Kyoei were a little too sharp in the leading edge for me. If no one buys them I will happily keep them in the closet as they are also the best looking irons of all time

Have never played a set of irons that I liked more than the MB blanks 4-PW finished by Corey Paul.  I believe they are Kyoei forgings. PW is 46 degrees with 4 degree gaps between heads.

Bought the heads used from EBay, paired with some KBS $-Taper 120 S shaft pulls and added BB & F ferrules, Mid size SuperStroke Black Traxion wrap grips.  All in for under $600.  Replacement cost is probably over $2000.

No logos, clean as can be.  The only thing stamped on them is on the hosel it says Japan Forged.

I frequently get questions about them because there is no markings to identify them and they are stunning looking.

I really like the transition form the hosel to the sole and top line.  Minimal offset. The top lines are thin and the soles are narrow, the longer irons get progressively smaller.  They feel super soft and are extremely consistent with spin and carry distance.

The pictures enclosed show them in my bag and also the 7 iron compared to a Cobra RF Forged MB 7 iron.

Bought the heads used on EBay for a ridiculously low price.  They were like new.  I’ve got two sets of Corey Paul finished Cavity Back irons.  One of which is also like new.

Yep, I waited a while for him to drop some irons and he finally did a few months ago. Once he mentioned Kyoei forgings I couldn’t pass them up. He grinds, torches, stamps the heads himself. I believe he’ll take some custom orders and will also put some up on eBay. He mentioned on IG that he expects to be getting more iron heads in soon. I’m assuming Kyoei MBs again.

This isn’t really on topic but has people contributing that may be able to answer:

Has anyone hit / owned both the Kyoei dual weight and the KK CB? I can’t find great info or any real comparison…the website suggests the CB is a smaller profile head but the dual weight doesn’t looks like a GI club by any means

CP has some MB heads up for auction on his IG site right now. Looks like he got more Kyoei heads in so prob a good time to reach if you’re interested in some.

Hello all. I've been around for awhile, just now finally setup an account... I recently did a fitting at Club Champion that was a little less than spectacular. They didn't have a lot of the stuff they advertise, but we found the best fit with what they had. Recommended was the Srixon ZX7 MKII, or the Muria 201. I play both Mizuno MP29s, and Titleist 718 AP2s now. I'd like more forgiveness and a softer feel. The 201s felt great, now thinking about the Kyoie stuff. What's the difference between the CB and dual weight? Also, where can I go to hit the Kyoie stuff? If I am gonna spend the money on it I need to hit em first. Or, is anyone willing to send me a 7 iron head that I can build and try (in my sim), then send back. Other than the MP29s, I don't know much about the Japanese irons. Looking for soft feel. Any help is appreciated Thanks.

After a lot of research and few results I opted for the KK CB irons.  Its been over a week now and still in transit from Japan.  Once received I will shaft them with 110 Steelfibers.  I plan to give a review of these since it is very hard to find opinions on these irons.  From what I've read, most everyone states that Kyoei is softer than Miura, but I understand this is subjective.  This far, I've played Miura CB-57's, BB's, and most recently the KM's.  Out of these irons, I liked the Cb's the most.   I can't say any of the Miuras were super soft unless I was hitting a premium ball on a hot summer day.

My next purchase will be Kyoei blank MB's assuming the CB's perform as expected.
