I got lucky with Petty. Another case where I wasn't a big fan at the time, but a friend who didn't drive had a spare ticket, so I drove. Turned out to be a fantastic convert, and I became a big fan because of it.

I am sure many have passed on a concert at one time or another and wished they could rewind time and change our minds.  My ultimate concert rewind was in June 1983.  It was a cold, rainy day in Colorado.  A high school buddy of mine asked me if I wanted to go see a concert at Red Rocks because his girlfriend didn't want to sit in the cold rain.  The group wasn't very familiar with me and I may had heard a song of theirs.  That group was not on my musical play list (at the time).  I passed because, for the lack of a better phrase, I was a complete idiot.  Yes, I passed on U2 at Red Rocks.  My wife has told me that, "You were an idiot, I was there with Lori."  There were around 4,400 people in attendance but the concert was the one the U2 video was made and Sunday Bloody Sunday was the music video MTV continuously played that launched U2 into world wide acclaim.  U2 has become one of my favorite bands and I have seen many concerts but U2 isn't one of the groups.  They are near the top of my bucket list.

If only I could rewind that moment.  UGH!!!!!

U2 @ Red Rocks in ‘83… iconic. Sorry you missed it.
I caught the ‘Unforgettable Fire’ tour in SF in ‘84 and it was epic.

Saw U2 on 3rd album tour, "Sunday Bloody Sunday" that one, 3 times. Played Woosely Hall at Yale, a tiny theater. Bono shimmied up balcony and walked along railing around the place. Crazy. Saw them at The Pier in NYC, and SUNY in LI, there we were outside passing the stogie, bus pulls up, we scream "Bono!" he gives us the thumbs up as they walk in. They went big time after that summer.

Seeing a band at an “intimate” venue prior to them “blowing up” is the best.
*Lots of quotation marks in that one! Lol

I saw Styx on their Cornerstone tour, and I had tickets for the Paradise Theater tour. Got to the Auditorium Theater in Chicago for the concert, a fantastic venue with outstanding acoustics. 'Saw the Eurythmics there from the 2nd row, and have attended numerous plays and Joffrey Ballet productions as well. The show didn't start on time due to technical difficulties with the AV equipment, and after a long delay the canceled the concert and rescheduled it for the following night. Grrr. Go to see a "rock" band and they can't play because of video issues? Bah. Unfortunately I had tickets for a concert the next night, so I didn't get to see them a second time. Still bummed about that.

I was fortunate enough to see Tom Petty twice. Both times were excellent. My biggest one is missing David Bowie. My wife and I were dating at the time. Both had a long day at work and weren't feeling great. Our exhaustion kept us from making the two hour drive to Philly. We should have toughed it out. He passed away before we got another chance.

I watched 60 Minutes the other night and one of the segments was on Rick Rubin. He told a cool little story about Tom sending him a demo of 5 songs back in ‘93 to get some feedback on. Of the 5 songs the only thing that stood out to him was a few stray guitar chords that Tom played between songs… He told Tom it was the best thing on the tape and it turned into Mary Janes last dance.  Wild to think about Rick telling him the demo is blah, but you are onto something with the little riff you played between those two songs. Write that.

Amazing how many great songs started as a little finger stretching exercise, e.g. Sweet Child 'o Mine.

The Eagles are coming back to Tampa next month and my daughter asked if I wanted to go again. Looked at the price of decent seats and I decided to pass.

It was a great show last year but $800-$2,000 per seat is just nuts, and those are not the most expensive.

Great topic...I actually think of this often.

Right now I have 3:

1.  Backpacking through Europe in my University days. I was in Dublin, Ireland and remember seeing a poster for Van Morrison playing that weekend at a local club/venue.  Would have had to change my travel plans by a day, and decided not to.  Idiot.

2.  Tragically Hip's final concert in Toronto, 2016 (I'm in Alberta).  Tragically HIp was the band of my youth/University Days.  In the early 90's they were such a great small venue band and were just started to become huge.  The 2016 concert would have been for nostalgia and I knew that it would be their last concert (Gord Downie passed away from cancer soon after).  Regret missing it.  Idiot.

3.  U2's Joshua tree tour.  I like U2...especially their early stuff, but I loved the Joshua Tree album.  One of the greatest albums of all time in my books.  They toured this album for the second time around 2017.  My oldest daughter was old enough that I could have taken her and this is something we could have done together.  Decided not too.  Idiot.

  • 1 year later...

Sitting in a brewpub enjoying a juicy burger and a very nice barrel aged Belgian quad. The brewpub is piping classic rock through the overhead speakers. They played a couple of live Who tunes in a row. I wasn't a big fan of the band back in the 70s and 80s, but I appreciate them now. I had a chance to see them on the Who's Next Tour, but took a pass. Dumb move.

One of my wife's bucket list is Heart.  We were supposed to see them back in 2018 (IIRC).  She got sick and I took our daughter to the concert at Ball Arena in Denver (former Colorado resident here).  The lineup was Heart, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts  opening for Heart, Elle King opening up for Joan Jett.  It was a terrific concert!  On Friday she will see Heart with Cheap Trick opening at the Amalee Center in Tampa (now Florida residents).
