Launch Monitor For Range Use...

Long story short... I just got denied membership at our local CC and so now I have more discretionary income to spend on golf gadgets, lol.

 

Was curious, I'd like to get a good launch monitor for my 12yo son who golfs a lot. And so without that CC access, he has to practice in our backyard. Which means a more basic setup... We have tons of clearance in front and back, so can set up a net for him to hit to his heart's content. In which case, I'm looking for a monitor that gives him the data he needs to see how he's hitting. It feels like my options across the various price ranges are Mevo+ vs Flightscope X3 vs Trackman.

 

I'm guessing Trackman is overkill. But is the Flightscope still overkill vs the Mevo+, i.e. will Mevo+ get me everything I need? And is there anything else you'd recommend instead? To be clear, he would be hitting mostly in our backyard into a net, combined with about 1/4 of his non course time at the range, where we'd also bring the LM, if possible.

A lot of support for the Mevo+ on here. If you're going to take an LM to the range there is an argument for a monitor with a built in screen that you don't have to hook upto a phone each time you use it, eg BLP, the new voice caddie etc. 

 

Anyway we will need to know why you were rejected for CC membership before we can advise further.

He needs to be able to set this up by himself.

Mevo+ with pro package will give you everything you need. But on the range, if you're hitting from.grass then you'll have to re-adjust the device to ball setting. If you're hitting.off a mat then you're good to go as long as you have the right space and setup variables behind the mat. 

 

Flightscope and trackman are effectively the same thing. If you have the funds for them then do it. They're easy to setup. 

 

BLP would be easy to setup and adjust. But I think you have to use the face dots to get path and face to path info (assuming you have that subscription level)...which is why you go gc3 if trackman is even in yhe conversation.

 

But I agree with the poster above...spill the beans on the CC denial...

the mevo+ with pro package is great! however if trackman is even in the convo i'd get that or the gcquad. if you want to "save" money" i'd go with the gc3.

I would seriously look at the new MLM2 from Rapsodo. Aside from that BLP is likely your best bet. Mevo+ will be really good at the range but not as good as the camera based systems into the net.

I can read perfectly fine, my recommendation remains the same. It's the best bang for the buck option for this use case IMHO

Ok... so, my club (we're social members still) can get me a deal on the Full Swing KIT for ~$3k. That randomly came up as an option today after I'd posted this thread. So I think I'm leaning there because it means my son can just use the monitor without another device to get the data, as he would with the Mevo+.

 

As for why we got denied... TBH, we're not sure. I suspect it's when we got on the waitlist a year+ ago, it was more of a low-key, but very nice club and the new board is intent on turning it into a very high-end, high-roller type club, i.e. there are now a bunch of sports celebrities who were fast-tracked to membership in the past 6 months. That said, I've moved on. It's not my scene, I don't really want to play golf with a bunch of "bros" and the savings from the initiation / monthlies will more than fund my son's golf development going forward. Even if it means it's a bit more inconvenient now. Plus, me and my son are the type who need a chip on our shoulder, so he's already said he's using this to push himself harder in golf. Such is life...

Keep in mind the quality of the range balls you hit will have a dramatic effect on the quality of the data

I agree with this if your talking about ball data but not club data.
