... You guys and your pictures remind me of the summer between my senior yr in high school and freshman year at ECU. I was a lifeguard at Myrtle Beach along with the middle linebacker I played with in HS. Not a bright guy but a ton of fun. We made a $10 that whoever gets laid first wins the $. First morning I called over this beautiful girl walking down the beach and asked her to let the lifeguard at the next stand know he owed me $10. A little later that morning I sent 2 adorable twins to let him know he owed me two $5 bills. He came down the beach and said he concedes and stop sending beautiful girls to his stand. 

... So after lunch I sent an overweight, homely looking girl to let him know I owed him $10. 🫣

... We went to the bars most nights but I had a girlfriend. I strayed once with a cheerleader from ECU that was teaching at a Jr cheerleading camp. A stunning red head and it would be more appropriate to say she chased me.  😇

8am - 5:30pm 7 days a week. They brought our lunch to us in a jeep and we ate on our stands. "lunch" was mostly something like bologna and cheese on white bread and a plastic thermos filled with koolaid. At least they rotated the flavors. 🤪

Believe it or not, most LG's never went in the water. But my Hotel was right next to a campground so I went in 4 times, really just helping 3 of them but saving a young boy I a rip tide once. Mitch never went in. The days started to blend together and the only way to keep track was a bunch of Lilly white people on the beach Saturday and an equal amount of bright red people on Sunday. For awhile I tried telling adults to take it easy the first day and wear sunscreen but after being told to STFU mind my own business, I stopped.  

The reality is, even though Water safety Insructor certification was required, we were salesman. Our real purpose was renting Beach umbrellas, chairs and heavy duty rafts. We set them up in the morning and broke them down at night. And living the life was one dude that had been there 20 years and as much as I like to identify as a hippie, this guy was a REAL hippie living at friends houses in the off season and doing a lot of hitch hiking the entire country. Our rooms were tiny and filled with sand and the air conditioners often broke down so one year as a LG was enough for me, but it was a ton of fun at 18.

I remember one year out at the beach we noticed some lifeguards training, they were wayyyy out in the water. Could just see their heads were little dots. So, we were eating dinner and they were out there the whole time! And then even for another hour it seemed like as it was getting darker and darker, they were still out there! Pretty awesome to be so comfortable swimming in the ocean like that.

... At that age we were invincible. Huge storm one day and the beach was closed so we surfed 12 foot waves. I had no fear of the Ocean at all. Much later in life I found out I should have. As you said, it's no joke. I remember something I learned in college that always stuck with me. if you double the velocity of water, you increase its carrying capacity 64 times. I finally understood why Floods, Title Waves and Rip Tides take so many lives.

It has changed a lot here since your days. A couple of years ago a person drowned because the Lifeguards were busy renting beach chairs and umbrellas. Lacks Beach Service along with the City of MB was sued. The city passed an ordinance that now Lifeguards were not to sell rental stuff and the service has to have a separate person or persons to do the rentals. NMB passed the same law too. Recently especially NMB in the last 2 weeks they have had an abnormal amount of rip tide rescues.

I do not know if I mentioned this or not but my aunt and Uncle ran the beach service and lifeguard house for John's Beach Service here. My Uncle did all the float and chair repairs etc. My Aunt ran the house. I had a dream summer in 69 I spent 2 months down here with them. They had a record of being turn around specialists in stuff like that. In the 70s they moved them to Delray Beach Fla to turn that operation around. The summer of 69 was neat. We were up early and ate a hearty breakfast cooked by my Aunt. Then we were off with the ancient WW2 Jeep pulling the trailers with chairs and floats etc to their respective stands. Sometimes in the dawn my Uncle let me drive the Jeep on the beach. We also did a lot of surf fishing and pier fishing. June and July were great that year then I had to go to Grannie's in Greenville in August to visit and of course help with tobacco harvesting. But it was neat there too I got to drive the tractor and pull the trailers they slung Tobacco in. Also took turns on fire watch at the Tobacco barns when they were curing Tobacco. It was fun but not as fun as the beach. I always made a vow to move back here which I did. But it is not the same in fact it has changed drastically the 23 years I have been here
