Wedge Build w/ Hard Stepped Irons

While I recover from back surgery, I can’t help but think of some improvements I want to make to my bag once I’m back. Here’s the situation / question:

I have a set of NCW irons / wedges with Modus 115x throughout. I was fit into these shafts, but from experimenting with other iron / shaft combos I’ve concluded I don’t need X shafts and I generally prefer a slightly lighter shaft, specifically the Modus 105.

I’ve found the Modus 105 fit me best at stiff hard stepped once. So my plan is to put hard stepped Modus 105s into my 4 to 9. This is the easy part.

My issue lies with the PW, 50, 54 and 58.

For the PW, I’d prefer to keep at 105, so will probably go with a standard 105s since I can’t hard step that (right?). Ideally the shaft stiffness would be the same as others, but not sure how to achieve that unless I soft step an X twice (which would also introduce more weight)?

For the 50, 54 and 58, I do want to keep a bit of extra weight for feel around the greens. They currently have the weight with the 115x, but I don’t need the stiffness. Would the easiest thing be to buy 115s and install them straight in? Or, is there anything else I should consider? I do like being able to play my wedges down which the X helps with, but the X feels like a board when trying to play touch shots, which isn’t my favorite

thanks for any thoughts / advice

Most sets are today are built with the Pw only 1/4" shorter than the 9i and usually use the same discreet length shaft.  So you should be fine there, just get (2) of that shaft for 9i and Pw.

For the wedges just install the standard "wedge shaft" from the the 115 'S' flex set, which is the shortest discreet length they offer

Have you read @Howard_Jones thread on spinner shafts for wedges?

Normally you’d go

105x 8i —> GW

105x 9i —> SW

105x PW —> LW

You can hard step those into your PW, GW, SW. That would leave you with just the LW to figure out. There you could try a another 105x PW and tip-trim it or maybe a Modus wedge shaft.

You might consider these...

These are 115-gram S300 shafts which deliver mid-launch and mid-spin for mid-tempo swing.

IF you know a clubsmith, you might see if s/he has any Callaway shaft pullouts: namely, the DG TI 115 S200 Reds (MD4) or S200 Blues (MD5).

Either the DG S300 or S200 shafts would be 10 grams heavier than your Modus 105s, but would be less firm than the hardstepped iron shafts. (You wanted "feel around the greens.")

Because I am a feel player, my wedge clubs are set up a bit different.  T100s set has 44' PW and 48' W, which go nicely with 52' Gap & 58' LW.  I wanted a bit heavier feeling in those clubs, so each of the latter 3 clubs were lengthened to 36.5" = PW length, some Tungsten powder was added, with 3 wraps and grip, increased swing weight feeling of each club, without messing with respective static weights.

I have seen the thread, but have never dove into it.

I guess my only concern with this would be weight, since I do want a bit more static weight in the wedges.

Could I do this with the existing 115x I already have as follows?

115x 8i - 50 degree

115x 9i - 54 degree

115x PW - 58 degree

I can also take this to the main thread but figured I'd ask here.

Someone more knowledgeable than me in the similarities between the 105 and 115 might have to chime in.

I could see it working as you’d be going slightly heavier and slightly softer(no hard step). Similar to X100 players who use S400 in wedges.

Sounds like a 105S wedge tip trimmed ether 1/4" or 3/8" would work for the PW

and like you mentioned the little bit more weight in the wedges may not be a bad idea so you could do the 115X

115x 8i - 50 degree

115x 9i - 54 degree

115x PW - 58 degree

worth a shot since you have the shafts, if you don't like one of them but like the other go get that shaft and plug it into the one you don't like.

The idea is to go up a flex from the rest of your irons.  Maybe X to TX??  In my case, my 620 MB irons had MMT 125-stiff shafts, so I put MMT 125TX 8 iron shafts in SM6 Vokey 52 & 58 wedges, cut to length.  It has a different feel, but worked fine.

No downside to playing around with the 115x shafts you already have. If you really want soft in the wedges, you could even try the 6 or 7i shaft. But I'd plug the 8i into one of those wedge heads, choke up a little, and see how it feels. Adjust from there.

I just got my 4-9 irons in 105 stiff hard stepped once. Next, for my wedges, I'm going 105s straight in for 46 and 50. Then going 115x soft stepped twice (8 iron shaft) for my 55 and 60.

Trying to keep it simple.

Thanks for chiming in. Sounds like we are thinking alike. I think I am going to try:

4-9 iron: 105s hard stepped once

PW: 105s as is (don't think I trust my local shop to tip trim...)

50: 115x 8 iron shaft

54: 115x 9 iron shaft

58: 115x PW Shaft

This will allow me to use the shafts I have on hand and use the 105s set up I've liked so much in my other set.

Thanks everyone for the help.

Sounds like a great place to start. Curious how the wedges feel, esp the short ones. I have gone to an 8i-and-up strategy (albeit in the X7, which for me play hard in the short irons).
3-8i straight in, and perfect. Then keep the 8i all the way 9i through the LW. That gives me a consistent feel through the short irons and wedges, with just a little more feel as the heads get heavier, offset by the shortening of the shafts (which makes them play stiffer). Overall feel is consistent, 3i through LW.
