Decisions...decisions....

Looking for some educated suggestions for the top(ish) end of my bag. More specific the top end of my irons.

Currently have a G425max 5wd with Tour 75x shaft; 230 carry as my most lofted wood.

Irons are Ping Blueprint with PX LZ 6.0. LOVE LOVE LOVE these irons, however the consistency does fall off with the 4 iron....and to be fair 5 iron could be a bit better. Yardages on GC Quad over winter are; 7i-170, 6i-182, 5i-193 (avg of 10 shots each) BUT the 4i doesn't go much further than the 5iron, like 5 yards unless I SMOKE it! Then it will go 205yds.

 

Even then....I wouldn't mind closing the gap with the 5wd and 4iron....so thinking something more forgiving like an i210, i500/525? What about a crossover or U85...but in my head these 'driving irons' will be a bit too hot for gapping with the irons and will need a 5utility for a 4iron. PERHAPS a...*gasp*...hybrid?

 

Not getting any younger and in my late 40s but still hanging on to a 0.6cap so striking is ok.

 

Anybody able to put some blinders on me and focus my direction?

Sounds like you could use a bit more help from shafts in 4i and 5i. You have two options within the PX family.

One option would be to shift to PX 5.5 and softstep.

 

This would involve a PX 5.5 4i tip shaft in your 5i, and 5.5 3i in your 4i. The shafts would be a bit lighter, and the tips a bit more flexible which would help launch.

A second would be to shift over to PZ IO, which is a flighted shaft. This means the long irons shafts get a slight boost in launch, while the short irons shafts launch a bit lower to prevent ballooning.

 

Also, the PX IO 6.0 would be 10 grams lighter and the IO 6.5 5 grams lighter.

As for your "in my late 40s" worries, our thirty-something head pro (he's a bonafide gym rat) went from heavier to midweight shafts last season. He said the the heavier shafts were too tiring if he got to play two days straight.

It’s got to be between 7 wood, 23 ish degree hybrid or a stronger 4 iron. Probably comes down to the conditions you play in and preference. 
 

I’m in a similar situation, hybrid carries 230, 4 iron 205. Im thinking of strengthening my 5 iron 1 degree and switching to something like a  T100 or T100s 4 iron looking for around 215 carry. I don’t mind hybrids but 21ish degrees is the max, I don’t like the look of the higher lofted versions.

If you're still a good striker and have the speed, I'd look at either 4/5 I210s or i500s (no experience with 525s).  I've had sets of i210s with both a 4i and a i500 4i.  I could hit either just fine, but the i500 gave me a higher flight that let me land it softer if needed and didn't get caught in the wind unless it was just blowing hard and didn't matter that much.

 

I'd say i210 first, great iron and not likely as high a flight as it might put you off from an i500.  Haven't tried out the blueprints, so can't comment on flights from that perspective.  But you should get a bit more distance out of it with a higher flight and lower spin than the BP.

You’ve got a few options, I would definitely recommend you take out the 4 iron. From there you should look at one off the following options:

 

Ping i230 4 iron (retro loft) gives you the same loft gapping in a more forgiving head

 

A 24* long iron replacement, or i525 5 iron (24* loft) May fly a little further than the i230 4 iron but decrease the gap between your 5wd

 

A 25* hybrid. Will fly a little higher than the long iron replacement and also decrease the yardage gap of your 5wd.

 

The hybrid will be the most forgiving, then the long iron replacement, then the i230 4 iron.
