It doesn't matter! After the 10 sec it is "deemed" to be at rest...no matter what.

Check 13.3 to if you want to see how the rule reads

 

Edit - sorry the rule uses the word "treated" not deemed

That was interesting. I thought it might devolve into a 16.3b/1 – Taking Embedded Ball Relief When Spot Immediately Behind Ball is Not In General Area, but apparently not.

Interesting putting vid. Ball was overhanging for 32-33 seconds. Player is allowed some unspecified "aw shucks" time, time to walk to the hole, then 10 seconds before a falling ball is in the 13.3a penalty zone. This suggests the "aw shucks" time is at least 20 seconds.

Why do you say that?  He was penalized...so I think the allowed time was no more than 5-6 sec (it was ~15' putt). Ball didn't fall in by 15-16 so he was assessed 1 stroke pen.

Anyone remember the player/situation where a guy literally waited something like 8+ min? And the ball did eventually fall in...

 

I want to say back in 60s/70s?...the original impetus for the rule i believe.

Thanks, that's my Sunday morning news here, my first intro to the Saturday PGA play was the vid in your post.

Good! That is how we are told the rules need to apply - player should constructively move to the hole then start the 10 sec clock - but there have been some dramatic failures to apply this rule in big pro tournaments before.

Back then if they thought the ball was mov they couldn’t play it….must have been moving reeeeeeaaaaalllllyyyy slowly to wait 7 minutes!😏

The late Arnold Palmer wrote about this incident in his book Playing By The Rules. He just embellished the story claiming the ball eventually fell in after 8 minute waiting.

Yep...and free relief for anything resembling a divot the fairway (or most likely they roll it all the time anyway)

Unbelievable...Victor has to be within 2-3 inches of where Connors hit it yesterday. 

And he asked (just like CC did) "are you sure bout that?" That going left would be closer to the hole..

I watched that with interest, too. (Some years ago I worked an AJGA major, the Wyndham Cup, where today's final group referee, Ted Antonopoulos, was their SRO. That was a real treat to spend time with him. His hair was big and white then, too)

Yup. Amazing. Same hole, same bunker, same skulled 9 iron that basically took both of them out of the game.

 

I didn't get microscopic on it but it almost looked like Hovland's ball was touching the sand before he picked it up.

 

The official was right there so one would think he had a better look than *I* did, BUT, I saw the ball from behind it. And I thought it might be the 16.3b/1 rule that @sui generis mentioned earlier in the thread.

 

The official seemed to be looking downwards from above the ball so I'm not sure he had the best look.
