Could lie angle help with posture at setup?

Recommended Posts

Im a tall guy, 6ft 3. I struggle with posture and specifically having my butt too far back to balance at address. I cant hold that position through the downswing and into impact, so i early extend. When i look at my impact position, it is probably where i should be starting from.

As much as i try to, i find it really hard to stand taller with the ball closer - when i do it's shank city!

My clubs are +1 and the lie is standard (i believe). When i have been for fittings, the fitter always says they are good, but that is because they are good at impact due to me having learned to  extended and lift the handle to square up the face.

It feels like when im addressing the ball, the club is lying as it is designed. Would it be worth trying a much more upright club to almost force me into a taller stance?

Anyone had any success here? Or likewise going flatter for those who are too upright?

I am 5'10, and my son is an athletic and taller.  He doesn't play golf regularly, but when he does, he smacks the sh** out of the ball using my backup blades.  He's able to do that because I drilled it into him as a kid, the importance of working out, regularly, regardless.

How each of us addresses the ball, varies.  Presuming clubs are properly fit, if a person's CORE is weak, regardless of lie or height, it will be difficult to hold posture throughout the swing.

My buddy is 6'2, 255lbs with a protruding gut.  When he's over the ball he constantly struggles with his swing cause his balance is off.

I would say probably. The the club head isn’t sitting right at address you’re going to try to compensate be either standing more upright or bending over more. Below is a good reference chart for what your lie angle and shaft length should be. Have someone measure from the floor to the crease of your wrist while wearing your normal golf shoes. Then match that up with your height on the chart and that will tell you both lie angle and shaft length.

Good idea. I measured and i would be a +1inch with a silver dot. I just bought a Ping 7 iron on ebay with that setup. Worth a shot. Thanks

The Ping chart is an excellent starting point.  It's a static fit and may change as a result of how you swing.

I'm 6 3 with a 37 wrist to floor. I've always played +1/2 and 2 up.  However as times gone by the +1/2 had become a more standard length.  So when buying clubs be sure you check the actual length not whether they are + from standard. I play a 37" 8 iron which is standard but used to be +1/2.

No problem at all,  That silver dot will also change the lie angle to be 4° upright to compensate for a difference in the length plus how you stand with your height.

I'm 6'4" with clubs 1+ over standard and probably 1 or 2 up.  When I'm in the correct posture, I actually feel I'm reaching for the ball somewhat.  I'm not.  It's because for years I have stood too close to the ball which really messed up my posture. Hold the club out in front of  you about hip high with the arms somewhat extended.  Bend from the hips while keeping your hips over your ankles until the club hits the ground. Now bend the knees a little.  That should be about the correct distance from the ball while keeping the hips more over the ankles and will likely feel a little taller. When I do this, I'm pretty much  spot on but it doesn't feel like it.

In my experience as far as helping posture...no.  Length of clubs can help with posture...but lie angles do not.

I think the main reason is that how the player lies the club to the ground at address is usually a preference that they are used to seeing.  And if you go with from a 60* 5-iron to 62*, you're still going to use the same posture.  It's just that your swing as such may be better designed for the 62* lie angle when you get into impact than the 60* lie angle.

But with length, you're actually going to be a further distance from the ball.  There's going to be a noticeable difference in feel.  That's why we crouch over more with a SW that has a more upright lie angle compared to the driver that has a significantly flatter lie angle.

In the end, I tend to find that the longer clubs are often too long for golfers and the shorter clubs are too short for most golfers.  That's why I'm not a big fan of 1/2" increments with irons and 45.5"+ stock lengths for drivers.

Possibly but a proper setup probably helps more. My irons are +1/2" and lie is 3 up but there are still times I'll drop my hands at setup. Just need to double check my setup to make sure the iron is sitting flat.

I'm short so the Ping chart suggests -1 inch and 1 degree flat.

But, I know from experience that I'm really good at hitting the inside pitch in baseball.

My fitter suggested  -2 inches and 2 degrees upright.  He bent a club to check.

While waiting for my new clubs I cut the old ones down and they were easier to use.

The new clubs were really easy to use.  I was finally able to hit and hold the small greens on the executive course I play.
