DIY Ricky Putter

So to some extent I had been thinking about doing this for a while. I’m more of a cheap, just for fun club builder/experimenter. But with all the hype around the Ricky Jailbird, it finally gave me the spur I needed to get some some lead tape and add it to my putter. 
 

I bought into the hype with the Tommy armour Impact 3, more because I loved the shape than anything else (I have a weird thing with putters and needing a short blade length). But its a very light feeling putter. I also got one that I’ve always felt was too long for me. 
 

so I decided why not go the Ricky route and makeshift a heavy, counter balanced putter. So I covered the bottom of it with layers of lead tape, the a good 15-20g (I was entirely imprecise with this process) of lead tape on the top of the grip, and choke down on the putter. And first impressions have been awesome. Then I figured why not go the whole 9 yards and see if the versa paint scheme helped me at all since I don’t always align the ball well. So I threw some athletic tape on there, just to test it out.  And once again loved it. So much so that I actually might try to find a way to paint it that color. So if any has an experience painting their putter then HMU.  
 

And as for the last pic. I just wanted to see exactly how close I could get it to look like my own jailbird. And the answer is pretty damn close....and I do kind of like that second line on there...maybe something to tinker with later, but that later of tape isn't staying.
 

Those suckers are out here spending 1500 for a putter that I made with with a $50 used putter from 3 years ago and $10 of lead tape....jk. If you made it this far, thank you for entertaining my idiocracy.

i dont think i would want lead tape on the grip where you will be touching it all the time. I really cant even believe they still use lead tape being how unsafe and hazardous it is.

Basically since I've had the putter (maybe 2-3 years), I have gripped it towards the bottom of the grip.  I've actually found now that wrapping my finger around the bottom lip of the grip is the most comfortable hand position for me. I really haven't touched it at all since I put it on. But I could probably throw some electrical tape over the top for good measure.

It looks like your putter has literally been in Jail, got beat up for 30 days straight and was released on bail under compassionate grounds.

Lol this is exactly what I was hoping for with this.  The tape is most definitely temporary, just to test out how the vertical lineup aid worked for me, and the first impressions are positive.  Definitely could see a point where I sand it down and paint it white.  Lead tape was 90% of it. Honestly it's provably saying like this for a while.

Dont let the haters get ya, everyone was hatin on rickies equipment until he started tearin it up. I like the experiment.  I do think its funny to see counterbalance come back into style again. Golfers are really mental lol and that includes me.

I'm here for the haters.  Why else would I post this monstrosity on a public forum. I'm about what I'm about, and that's this kind of stupid project. It looks good at address and that's all that matters....lol  But the feel is really good.

With regards to golf it's something to be aware of, don't kiss your putter after draining a bomb and wash your hands after a round.

Also a dumb question but a question nonetheless. What's all the rave about the black and white alignment aid on these? Is it just supposed to help see if the face is squared? Is the contrast between the green and the putter face not enough?

It's just a higher contrast line.  I actually noticed that having the second line there really helped.  I'm not sure what it is but it just frames the ball a little better.  I feel like it did help a little bit, but that may just be complete confirmation bias. IDK  Thats why I put tape on it and didn't just jump straight to painting it.
