Best courses near Philly airport.

My group is heading to Portugal on a golf trip in a few weeks. We have a long layover in Philly and since none of us have played in the area we’re looking at where we should play. Any advice?

A while back I lived in Swarthmore, not too far from PHL, for a short time and found that good public golf was hard to come by in that area... it's mostly private courses.  I'd periodically go down to Rock Manor (in Delaware, about 30 min south of the airport), which was a quirky but fun course and usually in good shape.  No idea the condition now.  The other courses I'd frequent are all probably too far from the airport, but it depends on how long your layover is.

Looks like we need to call some friends to try and get us on a private course then. Thanks for the info.

Riverwinds is directly across the Delaware River from the airport. About 20-25 minutes away. Not going to blow you away, but a solid course and probably one of the closest public options thats worth playing.

Glen Mills and Paxon Hollow are probably the nearest public courses worth playing in my opinion. River Winds is just across the river from the airport but overpriced for what it is, if distance is a main factor then it may be worth a shot. Otherwise the area within 20 minutes north and west of the airport is sort of a dead zone for public golf in Philly metro.

You can play at Broad Run in West Chester - probably 45 minutes. 

 

How many do you have? I belong to a club about 20 minutes away. (Not Merion) 🙂

DE: White Clay Creek, Rock Manor  
  
Rock Manor is about a 30 minute I95 drive from the PHL airport. 
Check website for tee times.  You can book online.  If you call after hours, Golfnow 
will answer and book you.   It's busy in the AM, book early if going.   
Conditions are good.

What date are you guys coming into town?

Most logical option is Riverwinds right across the river from PHL. About 25 min up and around by car. Expect a 4.5h+ round.

Would recommend Springfield over Paxon Hollow this season. Slightly closer to PHL as well.

Riverwinds isn't that bad.  It's a nice course.  Not that I've played it in the few years.  

 

Scotland Run is 35 minutes from the airport as is White Clay Creek.  Both are good.  I prefer Scotland Run.
