New 2024 Jones Rover Stand Bag!

Recommended Posts

@madeinguam81 do you know if “field Khaki” is darker than their “le creme” colorway? I like how they look but I’m hesitant on a light colored bag and how difficult it would be to keep clean so I’m leaning towards the charcoal.

Went with the navy.  Very happy with the look and totally has the Jones vibe.  The weight and how it sits on your back is really good.  There is no handle on the back of the club compartment so didn’t realize how much I used it to put the bag upright.  The pockets are not very big, can barely/if at all fit a rain suit with top in one pocket and pants in the other.  The valuables pocket is almost unusable when using a cart as the cart strap goes directly across it.  There is an attached bungee above the valuables pocket that you can put a bag tag on, but when you do this it covers the zipper.  All in all, if you walk most of your rounds and don’t need to carry much gear, this is a very good solution.

It looks good. But, I agree about the importance of the handle at the top of the bag.  I didn't notice how much I used it even to hoist the bag on and off my shoulder until I didn't have it.  Helps lessen fatigue for sure.

@NDSwim thanks for the quick review, you’re probably the first to own it. Do you have 14 clubs in there and how does it fit? Also, is there a decent pocket for a water bottle? I’ve got a Trouper 1.0 that I’ve carried or used on a push cart so I’m interested in having this bag for carry days.

Yes 14 clubs and fits just fine.  Slight club tangle but that is expected with only three compartments.  As for the water bottle, a good spot at the front of the bag.  You have a zippered pocket and then right behind it, a large almost pouch that fits the water bottle.

This bag seems to be an update to the discontinued Utility Stand model, which conveniently I have been using for the last year-ish. I was surprised nobody else mentioned it, but I suppose the Utility Stand wasn’t very popular.

The Utility Stand is a solid bare bones stand bag and I have liked it, though it has a few flaws. There is no handle at the top for setting the bag down. The three way divider stinks, and I use standard size grips on all 14 clubs. The middle section always gets smushed together while carrying and those clubs get tangled. Those shortfalls have not been addressed here. This new bag also does not have a full length large pocket, which is a little strange to me.

The upgrades this bag has are the new upper valuable pocket, which looks great. The added hip pad is a welcome change. The straps are the newer versions they developed for the latest Trouper update. Good. I’m curious to see the price point because the Utility Stand, and now the Rover stand, fill a niche market that happens to be the exact stand bag that I like. More on that below.

Per the Jones website, they are full length.

https://www.jonessportsco.com/collections/rover-stand-bag

The features that drew me to Jones are minimal branding and more matte colors. Otherwise they’re just golf bags.

I carry all my rounds including several months when the highs are 95+. An extra pound isn’t a big deal IMO considering a fully loaded bags weighs a little over 20 pounds. I used a single strap with my Utility Stand and never had an issue with weight.

A couple photos of the Utility Stand:

Here’s a photo showing 14 clubs in the Utility Stand - splitting the middle third into two would make a big difference.

the bungee cord is for an umbrella....there is a flap near the base you stick the tip of an umbrella, undo the bungee, then wrap it around the umbrella to fasten it to the bag.

I've carried Jones bags for years and have always like them, regardless of their quirks.  I currently use a Utility Rover and it works perfectly for me.  I'm not in the mainstream as I don't care for stand bags.  It always seems like the stand gets in the way, doesn't deploy reliably, gets tangled up with my towel, etc.  I don't mind laying my bag on the ground old school.  It's what I am used to.

For those of you missing the handle, you can easily grab the club divider cross bar in lieu of a handle.

@NDSwim Thanks for posting that, it was my favorite colorway - wanted to ask about the top color, they call it Soft Blue but looks white or pretty light. Kind of hard to tell in the photos. Can you comment on how that color looks in person?

It’s light but definitely has a blueness to it.

I might go for one of these as an alternative to my Trouper. Can anyone recall when the Jones sales roll around?

Don’t recall any other sales besides their annual Black Friday which usually goes 40-50% off.

Thanks guys. I jumped on a Masters weekend sale at Carl's Golfland and got a G4 bag that is a rebranded SM 2.5 or 3.5 for $130 plus tax. I haven't had much chance to inspect it but it is definitely a lightweight bag.

Any issues with the stand? My stand bags always seem to have leg droop over time. I have Jones bag without a stand and love it, but would like something with a bit more storage and a stand when it's wet.

Enjoying the rover stand I picked up. Was using a Vessel Players . Like the 3 way dividers in the Jones better . Like vessels pockets better, but that’s understandable as it’s quite a premium bag.

How’s the carry balance?

in terms of? Sorry Only carrying for me is to the range and a short bit more. I ride 99% of the time, too hot in FL . I do notice in the cart the clubs shift to one side, not sure if that’s me or the bag

I’m in Orlando and I carry most of my rounds, but those are early morning to beat the heat.

I’ve owned a Jones Trouper and the balance felt a little off. Even after multiple strap adjustments, the clubs felt like they could slide out when walking if I’m not paying attention.

I haven’t gotten that with the rover. They are pretty secure imo, but again I don’t walk. Most of the courses I play really aren’t walkable, quite the drive between tees. More power to you, even in the morning, it is hot lol.
