Srixon Black Chrome Irons

Just wondering about the new Black Chrome finish that Srixon has introduced in their ltd edition ZX7 and ZX5 irons. Does anyone have any intel on what kind of finish it is? All it says on the website is..."and a durable finish that reduces glare at address."  Black/darker finishes are hit-and-miss in terms of longevity. QPQ and PXG's finish tend to last longer, but others (Titleist) age badly. What's the word on the Srixons?

I don’t know anything about the finish but they look gorgeous. If I had a few extra bucks lying around I’d pick them up.

Just by the looks of it I don’t know that it’ll be as durable as the PXG finish, but I have to find out either way. Ordered the ZX5 flavor this morning!

Custom in the sense that I ordered lofts at 2 weak and changed the grip to Lamkin Sonar+
 

Went with the “stock” C-Taper Lite S 110 in the ZX5

 

EDIT: oh, also I order 1/4” short since srixon irons tend to measure long compared to other OEMs

We need pics when they come in man! And hoping that the finish is quite durable for you. they look awesome in the marketing photos!

Definitely.
 

The badge area on the zx5 looks a little clumsy in photos, but I’ve sworn to myself I’ll lean toward one step more forgiving than Players Cavity clubs from here on out. As good as the 7 looks, I knew the 5 would serve me better. 

 

FedEx says I should get them Monday. Unfortunately I think since they’re marked as 2 day delivery they’ll get shipped from SoCal to Memphis, back to more south SoCal. I’m only 60 miles from Huntington Beach, and I doubt they’ll just come straight here. 
 

Regardless, I’ll get some in hand photos of the 4-PW in daylight ASAP.

Got mine coming early next week.  Very excited to get out on the course with these.  Went to my local Edwin Watts at the beginning of the week and they got a set each of the 5 and 7.  They were sold on the spot.  Barely got them out of the box.

Received a package today!  All of these are ZX5 mk II.  They truly are a black chrome.  Chrome with a darker hue, not really a black like some other OEM dark irons.  I should be able to get a range session in within the week so can show what the wear looks like afterward.  Pictured are 6i-PW.  I got the 4 and 5 but left them in the wrapper for now.  I could see myself using the 5, but I have a U505 4u that probably won't give up it's slot.

EDIT: they are all 2* weak so there will appear less offset than normal. Reduced offset was not the sole purpose, it was target lofts and spin addition.

I’ve always felt black finishes slimmed down irons. Crazy how much thinner those zx5 look to my eye! They look awesome. Enjoy them!

This is a wonderful post for the stubborn folks on here that love to say changing loft by a couple of degrees doesn’t affect offset. Those things look very, very good weakened. The black adds to that magic. Would love to see some pics after use as this is an interesting subtle black they’ve done.

I got impatient and went to a nearby range for a bit here in SoCal.  While I did these irons no favors with my extreme toe strikes (been a problem for the last 10 months - the phx clinic with @MonteScheinblum can't come fast enough!), anywhere near the middle felt so good.  I tend to like the feel of an iron with a bit of tech more than a pure solid blade anyway.  Sue me!

 

I'll try to get some photos of the wear tomorrow.  They will definitely show more wear than the standard chrome I think, but I do think they'll look better over time than a finish that starts even darker.  The shiny-ness might camouflage it a bit.

I love black or dark irons but i cant stand when the shaft is black also on the iron. Thats just me. I need the contrast.

I agree with you on the dark colored shaft.  That’s why I did a custom order and chose a regular kbs steel shaft.

These are the 8i and PW after about 10 balls on the range.  Range was grass but has some small rock debris and the balls were not the greatest.  You can definitely tell that the finish will wear away from the ball contact as well as lower on the face where it gets contact with ground and grass blades.  But because the whole thing is a chrome treatment, I think it will be less offputting than if it were a matte black finish.

Yeah unless itd the diamond black finish like cobra does where it is baked in... non of these black finishes will truly hold up.

OG poster here. Thanks for the photos! By the looks of things after only a few balls, that's kind of a deal-breaker for me. I get it, "tools not jewels" but that's not impressing me, especially at the premium price. But, hey, I don't want to rain on your parade. Not everyone cares about wear, and I hope you really enjoy hitting them. I'm team Srixon, but I'll pass on these.
