The right shaft weight and length is key for me.

I play my 7W at 41” in an 82g shaft, but I have another I’m testing with a 78g shaft and a little bit heavier headweight at 41”, so far it’s been promising….. I read people having trouble getting a high enough launch, and I’m in the other boat where I hit mine anywhere from 140-150ft peak height, my 4HY is around 135-145ft and my Irons are typically around 125-130ft high ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I remember reading something Ben Hogan said about hitting every club the same height based on some tree he would gage it off of…. Not sure if that’s  something obtainable or common, but I did notice on the PGA Tour Trackman averages, the peak height average was similar throughout the bag 🤔

On the 4w + 7w train, I like a standard length 3wd with an adjustable hosel lofted up. It's one of the only clubs in the bag where I like looking down at a slightly closed face.

I've gamed a couple different 7 woods over the past few years.  IMO, getting the length and weight correct is crucial on this club.  My first 7 wood was a bonded hosel with no ability to adjust the head weight (outside of slapping on a few pounds of lead tape), with a 75 gram shaft playing 41.5".  I could never get a great sense of where the club was through the swing, and it set up with (to me) a very shut face at address.  I never developed great impact consistency with it, and it ultimately became somewhat of a hook machine even when struck well.  Not a bad club at all, just a bad set up for my tendencies.  I typically need more heft and shorter lengths.  Switched to a G430 Max 7 wood this season.  Ventus Blue 8 shaft playing 41".  Have the loft turned down to open the face and switched in the heaviest back weight they offer.  Night and day difference in terms of consistency.

I never had good luck with fairway woods (tend to hook them a bit too much off the deck) but I went for a 3 wood fitting a few days ago and ended up getting a Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Max 3 (been working with lessons on my swing and getting better with fairway woods).

After I fell in love with the 3 wood, I asked about a 7 wood and they had a Heavenwood I was able to hit. It felt VERY good and I was getting it off the deck pretty easily (and didnt have my usual hooking issues that I have with fairway woods). I am still thinking about it, as I REALLY love my utility iron but a heavenwood might be a future purchase to play around with in the bag.

I play a Ping G430 SFT 5w and 7w.  5w is 19* but have it lofted to 20*/flat lie setting.

The 7w is 22* but I have it lofted to 23*/flat lie setting.  So almost you could say a 6w and 8w if there is such a thing.

The 7w I call my 175 yd PW as I have actually backed it up a foot or two on par 3 greens lol.

I used to game a 23* hybrid but the hybrid came in kinda flat and didn't carry as far as my 7w does now.  I am not all that tall 5' 4" so I play them both -1/2" in length.

For us slower swingers the higher lofted FW is a nice asset to have.  i don't even bother with 3w anymore as its just a stroke burner on the course.  shaft is too long, loft is too strong etc.

7 wood is ESPECIALLY good if you cut it an inch short, and use a low launch shaft.  It's like cheating!  Ball stops like a mid iron on the green

The 4w / 7w combination has just been money for me the past few years.  Golf manufacturers love of low spin has made the modern 3w unplayable for me.  The 4/7w combo is the 3/5w combo of yesterday year unless you have lots of speed.

I find the 7w to be so consistent.  If I am playing have have any doubt about a shot, the 7w is my club of choice.  Even inconsistent strikes turn out okay with it.

Put a Cally Epic 7 wood in the bag late fall. Kept looking at the recent Cally fairway offerings, but got turned off by the shallow face.  The challenge was finding one in decent condition. Always liked something I felt comfortable off the tee and turf. The Epic has filled the bill for both shots. Face not to shallow or tall, just right.

Just added a ping G425 7 wood in the bag. It works better than my old 3 hybrid and works great on track man. Should have a near permanent spot in the bag
