Sunglasses for golf after cataract su

Recommended Posts

I cannot believe we are on the second page of this thread and no one has recommended Maui Jim, particularly their ultralight, rimless frame designs like the Sugar Beach which is what I have.

I keep a pair of these in my golf bag that is exclusively for playing golf (I once made the mistake of wearing them for a mountain bike ride and they never made it home so this pair NEVER leaves my golf bag).  These glasses virtually disappear once you put them on, you can hardly feel them and they cover my entire field of vision. I consider that pair of glasses an essential tool for my golf game just as much as my putter.

A lightweight design like this requires being a little bit careful with them, but I think that's a small price to pay for their remarkable performance.

FWIW they have over 20 different rimless designs with a ton of different lens and frame options.

I’m debating between having regular glasses with “readers” built in. Or just carrying readers with me.  What do most of your patients prefer?

For golf most prefer regular distance glasses without readers built in.  You really don't use readers much on the golf course. But for everyday glasses its about 50/50 post surgery. Some people are so used to wearing glasses they want to wear them full time again. Other people are happy to not have to worry about them anymore and are ok with just readers. You tend to know which person you'll be in the post op period after the procedure.

You are correct.  I played for a long time in sunglasses with no readers built in, liked it that way.  Now with  new  lenses won’t need glasses, except to read, which I really don’t need on the course.  I’ll probably go with glasses, clear on top and readers, so when I watch tv I can also read mi iPad!

Thank You for your thoughts and observations.

Prior to surgery I wore RX Oakley Flak 1.0 with Prizm Golf. After surgery bought the non-RX replacement lenses and it let too much light thru for sunny days, good for cloudy days. Ended up buying Flak 2.0 with Prizm Dark Golf, works well on bright days for me.

Of the named brands I own and use Oakley with Prizm lens, Maui Jim, and Serengeti. I like them all and they have their pros and cons.

I'd simply suggest that you avoid the lower tier, discount brands like Sun Dog and Reks. Their lens material is trash. Speaking from a place of experience, once you take them to the beach and/or swimming pool their lens material degrades due to the chemicals and abrasion. You may never take your shades to the beach or pool, so I'm providing commentary on their lens quality.

there are stick-on Bifocal lenses, available in assorted strengths. they stick to the eyeglass/sunglass lens and can help you read a scorecard. might be of help to you.

Great thread. For those of us maybe a little less into the extreme "oakley" look but interested in the lenses, what frames might make a good choice? Also, I'm torn on which golf lenses vs the field lens that has been mentioned. I'll need prescriptions in mine, for the record.

I’ve had Oakley’s and they are good. However, I have used Tifosi sunglasses for the last 8 years and they are every bit as good as Oakley’s at a fraction of the price. They have lots of options and styles as well as golf specific lenses.

I just got a pair of Tifosi's off Amazon with the "golf" lens' and like them so far.  There's snow on the ground, so no "real" testing, but the fit well, and didn't interfere with my wide brimmed hat.  Hopefully they don't suck for reading greens and tracking the ball in the air, because I need to start protecting my eyes more.

They are very good. No distortion at all and do a good job seeing grain.

Has anyone tried the prescription Tifosis? If so, what lenses and color? They are WAY less than prescription oakleys (~130 vs ~700)

Very interested - amazing thread!

I wore them driving around in blinding sun due to snow and really liked the fit and clarity.  If they work as described on the greens and watching the ball, I'll be buying another pair to keep up north in that bag so I always have a pair.

Tifosi's at Amazon

These are the one's I got.  Smaller frame, so if you have a huge or wide face maybe a different model with the golf Enliven lens' would be better but these Seek 2.0's fit well without hat interference for me.

I tried a pair of ShadyRays, very good..check them out on their web page

Did you try their golf specific ones or just a regular pair?  I’ve got them for my daily wearers mostly because they were cheap and have found myself wearing them golfing quite a lot.

I’ve been curious on their golf specific “green wolf” glasses but haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

To follow up, I played last weekend and it was really sunny. I usually can't stand wearing sunglasses when I golf, and I forgot I was wearing them.  I kept them on the whole round.

I putted well, so they didn't hurt my reading on the greens at all.
