Sunglasses for golf after cataract su

Recommended Posts

Look on eBay for the Oakley sunglasses

The Flack 2.0 are the one that you see on TV (Rickie Fowler)

IMO they are the best

You can find a pair, new at half price on eBay

You do have to search for a bit

I am sure that other people have their favorite sunglasses that they will mention, but if you want the Oakley's eBay is the way to go (IMO)

Good luck

Looking for a quality pair of sunglasses for golf.  What you all using?

I’ve had Oakley’s and they are good. However, I have used Tifosi sunglasses for the last 8 years and they are every bit as good as Oakley’s at a fraction of the price. They have lots of options and styles as well as golf specific lenses.

Perhaps the biggest is whether you want polarized or non-polarized lenses.  This is (forgive me...) a very polarizing topic here, but MOST companies that make a golf specific lens make them NON-polarized; this includes both Oakley and REKS that I know of first hand.  The trade-off, of course, is that polarized cuts down on glare, but at the cost of less definition, especially when you are reading a green.  FOR ME, polarized lenses are great for fishing and sitting on the beach, etc; they are decidedly NOT great for reading a green.

So if you won't be wearing prescription lens after the cataract surgery, you might be able to use polarized until you get to the green, then remove them for putting.  If you are intending to wear them all the time while you play, then you'll probably want non-polarized.

agree. Only speaking on oakley lenses. I have a lot of replacement lenses for my Flak 2.0 and Fast Jackets. I wear Holbrook Mix as my DD for work with no hat. I mainly wear Flak 2.0 with the Prizm golf lenses on the course. All my other lenses are polarized and I cannot wear them on the course. I love polarized lenses but not for the course. I can't read the greens with them. they do sell a prizm golf "dark" lens but I haven't had the chance to review them yet. I'd like to for the mid-day bright sun rounds.

I've been wearing my prescription Oakleys for years. I tried the golf lenses in both light and dark and they were Ok but the Oakley field(baseball) lens is amazing.

i've heard that and i may try that for bright sun. light transmission on the prizm golf i have is 30%. the dark golf is 22% and the field (baseball) is 15%. all with a rose base which is good.

Yep, Thats why I tried the field. i wanted more sunlight blockage. The rose base is great but the light transmission is just better with the field lens.

I'll drop in a call for Smith.  I wear them for everything, brown/bronze/copper lenses for golf.  Their chromapop (plastic) and glass lenses are amazing.

Different styles than Oakley, and for the price, they are quite good.  I like the 6-9 wrap for golf, great coverage, less light sneaking in around the edges and I find their polarization to not hinder my green reading at all (IMO it helps find grain on Bermuda actually).

Once you figure out their sizing you can really get comfortable fits, the right wrap, and the lens options are quite wide (including a Prizm like color).

I also have a pair of their photochromic lenses, that get darker the brighter it is, in copper, my go to pair in the summer.

I've got a few pairs of Tifosi and they work well.

when I feel like spending on progressives - I'll get them through my optician. I still need cheaters as I went for the distance correction.

the improvements post-surgery were amazing.

weird to be able to read the ball logo on the ground but the scorecard is still blurry - LOL.

I wear Oakley Radar's with Prizm Golf lenses. Work well in bright grey skies as well.

I had the surgery and the Dr. recommended far sight and the use of readers.  I asked him if there were other options, but he said the basic lens would be best for me.  So, I’ll have to use readers .I've always played in sunglasses, with prescription, but my sight got so bad that even that didn’t work.  So I’m. Looking for quality sunglasses, equal to my original prescription. It’s nice to hear what others are using!  I sure appreciate everybody’s input, it’s much appreciated.

I use Holbrook XL Oakley frames with their NON-polarized Rose colored G30 sport performance lens for golf.

I tend to recommend sunglasses with wrap for my patients after cataract surgery provided they don't have a lot of astigmatism. It's going to be very bright directly after the surgery so wrap sunglasses help less light get in.  Most sporty sunglasses tend to have more wrap to them anyway like the flak jackets. Oakley IMO is the best sporty brand.

I’m debating between having regular glasses with “readers” built in. Or just carrying readers with me.  What do most of your patients prefer?

As one that does use those type of glasses, let me share the benefits.

1) - your eyes are always protected by wearing glasses. very little dust or particles on a windy day will bother you.

2) - if you ever need a distance vision correction - you just move to progressives with the reader lens at the bottom.

3) some people get accustomed to wearing glasses and like to keep the look with some snazzy frames.

4) the on-off of readers can be irritating.

I'd worn glasses since a very young age. it seemed more like 'me' to keep wearing them.

I can't imagine wanting to grab for readers every time I was looking at a scorecard, yardage book, menu, magazine.

big plus - you always know where your glasses are - 'cause they're on. LOL

Thank You for sharing your insight and experience!  I am leaning towards wearing glass, as like you I’ve wore them for decades.  It looks like always having to fumble around looking for readers, would be a pain.  I thought that once you have INL implanted they would not need to be changed or your reading distance, would remain the same.  That appears to be incorrect.  Sure appreciate you sharing your expertise!

my reader Rx hasn't changed since surgery 6 yrs ago, but the distance correction needs have slightly changed. doc says that's normal.

my first glasses post surgery were clear tops and magnifier bottoms. it was about three/four years later that I needed a bit more precision from the uppers.

the distance difference between clear and blurry has remained constant - if I want clear vision within fingertip reach - it's the magnifiers., anything farther than that is pretty good , even without glasses. sometimes for TV, it's nice to leave them off. any close work, computer screens - it's glasses all the way.

your eyes may change over time.

I’ve dumped the majority of my Oakleys for Roka. They’re ultralight, and stick to my face. I find them easier for long wear times.  I have a pair of Matador’s in their purple golf tint, and a polarized Torino for days I feel like wearing Polarized lenses. That being said, I still keep my Oakley Sutros in rotation, just not for golf.
