2024 ball testing….

Hit the 5iron today. CT still felt great. Now that I have narrowed that down as the ball I plan on trying to dial in distances.

for those of you that have dialed distances in before what numbers do you keep track of? I’m going to make a note card size chart for my yardage book.

thinking:

distances of

full

3/4

1/2

1/4 for the wedges

thinking of doing carry/roll for example 204.8/209.2

my mevo + has a pretty cool feature where I can do wind and direction. Was thinking a second chart of into the wind @ 5mph and 10mph as well as wind at your back?

for anyone that’s curious here are my 5 iron averages today….

CT: 205.8 carry, 4,590 spin, 102.6 club head, 136.8 ball speed, 13.6 deg launch, 43.2deg descent, 93.4’ height.

Definitely good plan on your wedges. I’ve seen guys put a label on wedges with the different yardages, and also Lee Westwood writes his distances with each iron with a sharpie in the cavity.

You had less greenside spin with the Z-Star Diamond compared to the Chromesoft X LS?

No I had more greenside spin with the Diamond than the LS, which while I loved the LS I couldn't deal with the lesser spin.

My apologies! I should have proofread my post!

I have also been extensively testing the Callaway 2024 balls this year. I have posted my data results below which I am interested in views on.

My testing set up:

is indoor only so far and off a fiberbuilt matt

measured with GCQuad and FSX Pro Software. shots are downloaded into excel post session.

done across several weeks so clearly some variances among the swings of the day

driver, 3w, 7w, 4h are ping G410/425 - ping stock shafts for all

Srixon irons ZX5 (5,6) ZX7 (7-PW) - steelfiber i95 r shafts for all

Cleveland RTX wedges - steelfiber i95 r shafts for all

my observations:

the CT spins MUCH LESS than the CTX. way less than others have seen I think. ~1000rpms less for many clubs.

ball peak height seems similar between the CT and CTX

CT feels better to me (softer)

I realize spin rates are from indoor testing will be different off grass. I wonder if the 1000 spin rate difference will be closer between the 2 balls as I still dont understand how it's so big vs. other tests I have seem people do.

I am going to start the year using the CT in the bag as it feels better, and I can get a few more yards from each club I think and my SS isn't the fastest as you can see.

I welcome any comments or thoughts on this!

Looks like the distance differences could all be attributable to the differences in spin since your club head speed when hitting the CTX was always higher.  Nothing really to set them apart and I would go with the CT just because it's a softer feeling ball.

Played CT for 9 holes today. Felt great. Did not spin as much as I had hoped/felt it should.

played the CTX on the back 9.was HARD feeling.  Spun the way I expected but was about a club shorter for me. But it was also into the wind on everything on the back side.

neither ball moved much in the wind which was great. Will probably need to play another round to decide for sure.

Been comparing the CT and the new AVX. Both are long, for me the split between these two is greenside spin. The AVX is much better when chipping and that’s the scoring difference for me!

I just did a ballnamic fitting and this is what it suggested.

Looks like I will try to get my hands on a wilson staff model and try the ProV a little more.

When digging into the data between the 3 all are within a yard or two on distance and also distance into a 30mph head wind!

That’s beyond ridiculous. The V1 and CS are polar opposites.

Marketing also says that the CTX should spin more but with my swing the CT out performed it by a long shot. I inputted the data from mevo+ into the system. I found it interesting, I didn't care much for the ProV when I tried it in my testing. I will try to get my hands on a Wilson ball to see but for the small difference I will probably just stick to the CT which is the ball I picked out based on all of my testing.

No luck finding a Wilson staff ball to test without buying a whole dozen. Found one guy and he tried to charge me 100 bucks for a sleeve! Then said fine 35 you pay shipping!

but,

am still enjoying the CT. I wish it had more spin like the CTX. But I just can’t do the firmness of the CTX.

CT has good durability and has hit well on all shots

In further testing and just playing rounds, the CT has outperformed the CTX tee to green.  Without a doubt!!

CTX just out performs CT around the greens.  Dan have you tried the new TP5?  They fixed that ball imo lol

I did try the tp5. It was a great ball but performed slightly less than the CT did for me. Ball speeds were a little slower and distance 5-7 yards less. Man did I love the feel though.

I have never been a huge spinner of the ball on chips so I am used to roll so the CT doesn’t really bug me much. Believe me I’ve tried to learn that chip that one hop stops or the bunker shot that flops and checks. For some reason no matter what I try call or swing I can’t do it!

im a soft ball kinda guy. If the CT had the CTX spin around the green, I  would have bought stock in callaway!!!

What on earth is that guy smoking???!  100 bucks for a sleeve???  As for firm balls, it may take some time to get used to the feel but you'll get over it.  The biggest issue is off the putter.  It's really tough to control distance going from a soft to firm ball and vice versa, IMO.

That’s what I thought when he told me his price!!!

yes, I struggle with the difference between soft and firm. Have always liked a muted sound more than a “click”

I can promise you, there isn’t a golf ball made that’s worth $100 a sleeve.

Ballnamic said based on my swing the CT is the ball to use even when I changed my preference to more spin and green side spin.

Ya ct was my choice but I tried it today pitching and chipping and it wasn’t great. Can only imagine what it is off short/mid irons. Sticking with BX.

I am at a cross roads now. Played the CT today and although it feels great and good distance I can’t stop a ball to save my life. I should be able to hit a 7 iron into the wind and have it stop.

might need to get used to the “click” of the X

Best bet would be to just get used to the firmer feel of the CTX.  You can test other balls, but it could end up being a waste of money and time.
