Why do you need a lob wedge?

This is a great way to say something that I completely believe in.  I'm going to be totally honest and say that I will be stealing it, but not to worry, extraordinarily little financial gain will be had, so you won't be missing out on any residuals of any great amount 🤣!

Weekend golfers would probably do better by just using a 54 (or 56) and chipping/pitching everything with one simple technique towards the center of the green. Most weekend warriors will struggle mightily with a 60. I practice a lot and struggle with a 60, but then again my technique and course are both working against me there.

Primarily greenside bunkers and really tight shortsided chips. Everything else is with my 54.

I've never understood the masses that say a 60 is a waste.

 

I fluctuate between a 6-12 handicap. If anything I'm tempted to bring back a 64 degree wedge into play.

 

Unless I'm just off the green with plenty of green to work with I play all of my shots inside 60 yards almost exclusively with a lob wedge.

One of the set-ups I've played around with is 46/52/58/64 all built to the same length and lie. Using just one method and all 4 clubs works pretty well. I slightly open the face, feet close together with the back foot square and the front foot flared and the ball right between the heels. Swing back and turn through. Petty simple.

I use 58° because I’m allowed 14 clubs and it’s a better option than carrying two putters or two 7i’s.

When I first started out, there was a guy I played with who carried a left-handed 8-iron just for playing shots where he didn't have a swing or a stance right-handed. Of course he also had mixed irons from about three different sets and I think a wooden-shafted wedge in his bag so nothing about his equipment was normal. I think he had 10 or 11 clubs in a bag that was torn so sometimes a grip would stick out through the side of the bag.

 

Every time I face one of those shots (once every few rounds?) I think,"Hmmmm, maybe that crazy guy was on to something".
