Bag recommendations? Stand or Cart Bag?

Recommended Posts

I'm in the market for a new bag and would love to get some input from this knowledgeable community. I currently have the MNML, and it has been a really good bag - super durable and good looking. I just could use a little more space (so a little less MNML and a little more MXML).  I use a Foresight Forecaddy follow cart 80% of the time (LOVE that thing) and ride 20% of the time. I think I would prefer a 14-way divider.  I like magnetic pockets (which the MNML bag utilizes very well). I also prefer a dedicated/specialized putter well - I have a Lab DF 2.1, so with that big of a head and grip, it seems like it would do better with its own bigger slot separate from the rest.  I also keep my clubs in the back of my SUV all day every day to go play a quick 9 after work when I'm able.

I've heavily considered the Ping Hoofer 14 - It has a great reputation in most ways but also has one really bad reputation trait having club tangle issues.  It also doesn't have a dedicated/specialized putter well.

I've also heavily considered the Titleist Hybrid 14, Callaway Fairway 14, Motocaddy Hydroflex, Sunday Ranger.

What do you think about these options? What other bags would you recommend over these?

One of the biggest questions I have is:  Should I be considering more of a cart bag (non-stand bag) since I only use it with a follow cart or riding cart?
I've only ever had a stand bag, so it's hard to think outside of that - I need a push if that's the direction I should go.

Titleist Hybrid 14 is a great bag, but for your use a cart bag would be better. You haven't stated a use for the stand on the bag, so getting a cart bag will give you more space and better functionality. I would go back to the drawing board with the goal of finding the best cart bag to fit your style and uses.

Cart bag is nice for storage but stand bags are nice if you practice or hit the range a lot. If you get a stand bag for cart use look for one with a pivot base not a lever or hinge to deploy the legs. Something like a Kradul Lux Stand bag which has a medium side pocket and a larger pocket as well.

For a push cart, there is nothing better than a Sun Mountain Sync. Not heavy, plenty of space, keeps clubs organized, just fantastic for the Push Cart Mafia!

If you use a push cart regularly and occasionally carry and occasionally ride, get a Sync for pushing and riding and a lightweight bag (Sun Mountain 2.5, Jones, Sunday) for carrying. That’s the best setup IMO.

I don't know how the long term durability will go.  But I just swapped out a Nike Air Hybrid (14 way) for the Callaway Fairway 14.  One of the main things I like is how it fits on the Clicgear.  I try to walk as much as possible and fit on the pushcart is most important, as well as the 14 way top.

I like the Nike a lot.  But hated the twisting on the cart.  So far the Callaway has been good.

You need to decide whether or not you want a stand, and go from there.

When I stopped carrying and went full time with a Clicgear, I tried a C130.  Great bag, but after it fell over in the parking lot/house/range for the umpteenth time I’d had enough; it now holds surplus clubs in the hall closet.

Deciding that a stand was a must, I got a Bagboy Chiller; lover the bag, but it was the least durable bag I’ve ever owned.  So I got a C130s and used it for several years until I replaced the Clicgear with a MGI electric cart; I never could get the C130s to sit right on the MGI without twisting.

So for a couple of years now I’ve been using the Titleist Hybrid 14.  Excellent bag, literally made for push cart use, with a double srap and a stand, but big enough to work as a cart bag.

Personal opinion:  Stand bags with an external foot mechanism, like Callaway and Sun Mt are a PITA on pushcarts.  You can make them work most of the time with the Clicgear bag cozy accessory, but it’s still suboptimal.  Ping and Titleist stand bags don’t have tha problem, and just work better, especially on electric carts.

Motocaddy Hydroflex. Fully waterproof, and although designed to fit onto Motocaddy electric carts, the indentation in the bottom of the bag designed to lock into the cart also works on MGI carts. Also has a mechanism to lock the stand from deploying, and quick release/attach double strap. And they are really cheap right now - $99!

Another vote for the Sync. I absolutely love mine.

Ogio Woode is an excellent bag.  I walk 3 days a week with a follow cart.  15 way individual dividers.  Zero club tangle. Every club stays organized. Lots of well placed pockets.  I use Jumbo Max extra large grips and this is an excellent bag.  Has 2 "snap" open/close pockets.

Thanks for the heads up on this!  At that price, I went ahead and ordered; if it doesn't work well on my MGI, I'll donate it to the First Tee.  The reviews indicate it's a good fit on all electric carts, so I'm hopeful.

Payback Bluedot - finally! I have taken your advice on so many things the last few years - from face-on putting, the BG F22, Sparms, - gosh I can't think what else. If the bag is a disappointment DON'T let me know - I want to feel I contributed a very little something to your game!

Sorry, don't know how to IM (troglodite here) - I am playing in the Durham Senior Amateur and am going to set up a practice round for next Tuesday (May 14 if possible) at your course - don't suppose you would be available to join me? I'd love to watch your side-saddle technique.

I had both a Titleist Hybrid 14 and Cart 14 over the past couple of seasons.  The Cart 14 got the most use, since I was using it with a Clicgear/Alphard pushcart.  Loved everything about it, except using it at the range due to the single strap and the placement of the strap on the underside of the bag - it's just awkward.  The storage and pockets are great and plentiful.

My Hybrid 14 was broken by Delta Airlines on a trip last year, and I switched from the Alphard to a Motocaddy during the off-season, so I opted for another Hybrid 14 and got rid of the cart bag.  Hybrid 14 has less storage, but still enough for my purposes, and is versatile for walking, cart/pushcart, and the range.  No regrets here with the Hybrid 14.

This is my recommendation from left field:

https://kahmagolf.com/c5-mk11-black-black-prices-aud/

Magnetic cooler pocket

Built in caddyrack system for exceptional organisation (much better than 14 way dividers)

2 dedicated external putter wells (the other can be used for your umbrella)

2 clips that allow you to secure the bag to your buggy/trolley

Last month I accidentally remote controlled my buggy into a deep bunker (long story!).  The bag stayed secured to the buggy because of the straps, the clubs stayed in the bag because of the caddyrack, and nothing fell out of the pockets because they were all closed. The only thing I had to deal with was the embarrassment LOL

Here’s the setup in action:

Hey, glad to hear you’re playing the DSA!  The course is in great shape; you’ll enjoy it.  I had better not commit to anything else next week; I’m for sure playing an interclub match on Thursday, and possibly on Tuesday as well.  You shouldn’t have any trouble getting a Tuesday tee time; if I’m not on the road in an interclub match, I’ll default to my regular Tuesday group, and I’ll hope to run across you then.

No problem.  I am playing 2 interclubs this week; unfortunately will miss one for the DSA. On Monday - sorry to crow - I had my first ever hole-in-one on #15 at Duke in the match! We went from 2 up to dormie...it was pretty thrilling. My partner today wants a repeat!

Outstanding!

Did that cost you much in beer money?
