Your golf quirks/preferences

Recommended Posts

I consider myself a practical golfer who prefers walking but will only ride if the course requires it or if I'm in a hurry.

I prefer late morning (11 am or later) as the earliest I'll play but will sometimes pick twilight if trying to save or if no other tee time is available knowing that I'll still be able to finish 18 holes even in the dark (see # 12 below).

Since coming back four years ago after a 29 year hiatus, I've developed a few custom items and/or use unconventional golf equipment that  helps me be a better golfer:

[1] Custom teethered tees consisting of a long and short plastic tee connected by a 6" long 18 lb. monofilament fishing line with snap swivels. Tees are modified with cushioned bumper EVA foam on one side to absorb impact. Tees last at least 16 rounds (18 hole round).

[2] I avoid my Irons from clanking around my bag by using head covers (9 hole round, carry bag) or using my Bag Boy Revolver XP cart bag (18 hole round, push cart bag).

[3] On Cloud Swift 3 running shoes customized with 9 golf spike configuration and club brush.

[4] Shelta Seahawk high-visibility orange hat (fishing/golf). I prefer this color to provide additional visibility for golfers to see me and avoid hitting up into my group.

[5] Custom ball marker (casino chip size). One side has the roman numeral "V" with 5 different logos surrounding it representing the courses where I've won. The backside has the words "Return marker to original position".

[6] Ball rag and custom mini bag with magnetic connector on my belt that I use to clean my ball before I putt on every hole.

[7] Rangefinder pouch on my belt to keep my rangefinder handy to measure first putt distance.

[8] Golf glove with magnetic connector (female). Magnetic connector (male) is on my belt connected to a retractable line. I always putt with my glove removed except during winter season.

[9] Custom club washer (similar to golf cart accessory) outfitted with silicone bristles and two sponges. Irons get brushed then dunked into the washer before being wiped with rag after every shot. Sponge comes out for hybrid or woods if needed.

[10] Leather score card holder with same graphics  ("V" with 5 logos) as ball marker outfitted with a retractable pencil.

[11] Pitch mark repair tool customized with EVA foam for additional functionality as a club holder when putting.

[12] I switch to UV balls at dusk when playing twilight rounds (non-tournament rounds only) and use artificial illumination (outfitted on my electric push cart) after sunset in order to complete last 4-5 holes: long-throw (range: 250+ yards) LED beam flashlight and LED floodlight.

[13] Custom belt clip for my remote (Alphard Club Booster V2 electric pushcart).

[14] Grip tape on my fingers (ring and pointer) on my right hand

[15] Right arm BOA elbow brace

[16] Worx 20V Leafjet outfitted on pushcart (Fall and Winter only)

[17] Thermos (Morning, Fall or Winter only) loaded with 12 oz. Nespresso Lungo machiatto.

[18] 40 oz. Takeya insulated bottle loaded with Lipton Pure Leaf Sweet Tea with crushed ice (Summer only).

[19] Kirkland Signature neon yellow 3-piece ball (tournament use only) with T-shaped mark. Assorted balls with same mark for non-tournament rounds.

[20] Custom magnetic eyeglass straps for my Oakley Trajectory.

[21] Modified Alphard EWheels Club Booster V2 electric unit with DIY external battery port to extend range to 36 holes. Modified internal batteries for external use retrofitted with 10A inline fuse.

[22] Custom virtual yardage book (tournament only, 2 hour effort) with shot selection and shot shape based on my specific average club range including conservative (lay-ups) and aggressive approaches.

 [23] Warm-ups (tournament only):

    > Start with 56° wedge to Driver. # of reps and shot shape is based on anticipated club selection from virtual yardage book. Get-out-of-jail shots including stingers, punch-out and left-handed shots.

    > Short game includes 8 & 9 iron chip shots, bunker shots and lob wedge shots.

    > Putting includes distances from 3, 8, 15, 30 and 60 feet as well as 15 footers from first cut.

  • Headcovers always go back on to my woods/putter before they go back in the bag.
  • At the range, I always start with my GW and work my way to driver.  I may not hit every single club between GW and driver, but I never go back down to a shorter club until after I get through driver...then anything goes.
  • When playing a round, everything I carry on me has a specific pocket it goes in.  Phone, glove, balls (2 max), tees, marker, divot tool, and cash are the only things I keep in my pockets when golfing and they always go back into the same pocket they are supposed to.

These are about the only things I have that I do every time. I wont put a club (putter or woods that is) back into the bag without the head cover on. I've had to fix paint on clubs before from not having head covers, and I dont like looking at scuffs when I'm lining up over a shot. Unless it's my hybrid. I expect that one to be a bit beat up for some reason.

On the range, I do exactly the same thing. For me it is GW, 8i, 5i, 3i or 2h, 3w then driver. Then I go back and hit random shots with the other clubs, and hit a couple more drivers just before heading to the tee.

When I'm playing, always the ball I'm playing in my front left pocket along with ball mark and a few tees (I'm left handed). Right pocket has only an extra ball. Glove goes in back right pocket, or hangs on the cart if it is particularly sweaty to help it dry. My wallet and pocket knife stay in my back left pocket whether I'm on the course, at work, at the store, etc, unless I'm at home.

Glove goes on before I swing, and comes off by the time I get back to the cart. Unless it is less than 30-40 yards, then I don't wear a glove. I live on the gulf coast and I sweat like no human should, so I can't keep the glove on any longer than it needs to be or it will just be a wet mess. Except during winter. I buy rain gloves (in pairs) and if it's cold they stay on. My fingers ache and throb in cold weather, so anything I can do to help knock the chill off I will.

The one thing I DON'T do, ever, is take practice strokes before I putt. I read the break, line up the ball (my red line aligned to the line I'm putting on), address it and putt. When I address the ball with my putter, I Iine the putter up with the line on my ball, then open my hands and just let the club kind of sit there while I look at the line and get a mental feel for the speed. I don't close my hands on the grip until right before I start my stroke. I have no idea why, it is just something I do, unless it is a tap in then I just walk up and slap it.

I commend you on your commitment to being "that guy".  I don't care how good or bad you are, if you ever play with randoms I 100% guarantee that they are telling their golfing buddies about you.

Sounds like you are very original, and proud of it.

I'm all about broken tees, i don't play a 460 cc driver. Thr price of tees annoys me. Im not wasting 9 new ones every round.

At $.03/tee, it would take me 100 broken tees to equal one lost golf ball. I probably break 4-5 tees/round. I'd have to give up golf if I worried about every lost 15 cents! spacer.png

I always try to think out of the box and willingly traded being "cool" a few years ago to sticking to a proven formula albeit unconventional, that is constantly evolving as long as it's within the accepted rules and doesn't cause any significant delays.

I'm not really concerned about fitting in but my main focus is to give myself the best chance to win in tournaments or play better in one or more facets in this game even if my overall score is not that good when playing non-tournament rounds.

Pace of play is easily the most important thing on the course to me. I don't care how good or bad you are. I'll play with anyone. I can't stand being the group holding the whole course up.

And have fun. We are playing golf after all. A negative attitude isn't enjoyable for anyone to be around.

Agreed.  Not sure most of these posts represent typical quirks, per se.

Some of these folks might benefit from a change in diet and perhaps a full course of antibiotics.

I despise slow play and lack of any form of pace.  I subbed on a league last night and we took 3 FREAKING hours to play 9 holes.  Needless to say, they just lost a substitute player.  That was mind boggling.  That's a decent time for 18.  😡

I've got an unconventional one for you with an odd preference of mine.

As a relatively "older" 51 years old, 15 handicapper, I hit long irons better than I do fairway woods/hybrids.  I prefer and often do hit 4 iron off the tees at some of the courses around here.  I also love to hit those low, piercing, fast running shots down the fairways that roll up onto or near the green. That's how I learned to play golf from the beginning, going back to my childhood when I used my dad's old MacGregor blade irons.  This goes against most all of the golf experts and teachings out there that say that golfers of my type should hit fairway woods and hybrid instead of the longer irons.

Back then, I never had a lesson, never watched a video (no social media/internet back then) and it was many years later into my adult golfing life before I started reading in golf magazines that I'm not supposed to be able to hit long irons; that mid handicaps like me shouldn't even try and to opt for the fw/hybrids.

With that said, I do have a couple of fairway woods, although I don't carry them during most rounds.

It almost sounds like a police officer's duty belt. I'd be curious to see it as well. I'm not sure I could be comfortable playing golf with stuff hanging off my belt like that. And I have to be honest, I don't think I've ever seen or heard someone say they use a range finder on the green.

The rangefinder gets holstered on my belt only when putting. Same is true with ball rag bag.

I've had significant improvements since adopting the range finder use on the greens. The most recent being able to hole 93 feet of putts which is my career best since I started measuring my putts a couple of months ago.

I've had significant improvements since adopting the range finder use on the greens. The most recent being able to hole 93 feet of putts which is my career best since I started measuring my putts a couple of months ago.

I'm glad it helps you. I am the opposite. I am very much a feel player, especially from inside around 75 yards. I wont pull may rangefinder or GPS if I am less than 100, as it really doesn't help me from my experience. Outside of 100, I very rarely use my rangefinder and mostly just a quick glance at my GPS for a center of green yardage. I find that knowing the exact distance to the flag has led to me missing more greens than playing to center +/- a little depending on pin placement. At a 7 index, I'm not consistent enough to need exact distances.

Might get to a 5 if you busted out that range finder on the green. Maybe a 2 if you turn the slope on! 😏

While I always pull my rangefinder from 50+ out, I do agree that having exact yardages makes me feel like I am trying to throw a dart instead of playing for the center of the green.  Sometimes this gets me into tough positions when the flag is tucked, even when I know it is tucked and there is danger.

I often wear cargo shorts because I can carry extra stuff.  Dedicated pockets for tees, extra ball or two, divot tool/marker and cell and handkerchief.  If I play a nice course with a group I might wear more "civilized" attire.

I've stopped relying on ball alignment lines for lining up putts.  I tend to trust the alignment line on the putter more.

I'll disagree with this I think taking the glove on and off stretches it out and shortens the life.  I never take mine off.  Nicklaus putted with a glove on and he did ok, who am I to think I need to do differently.

I don't worry about the life of the glove. I buy the Kirkland gloves which are quite nice and a hell of a great deal, and they last enough rounds that I don't even know how many rounds they last because I've never even thought about counting them. Not even just removed for putting. The glove comes off after every shot, because...

If the temperature is over 75, my glove comes off after every shot.   If you sweated as much as me, you would understand.   When it reaches the mid 80-degree heat, if I didn't take my glove off it would last maybe 2 or 3 holes before it was too sweat-soaked to be playable.

...I too sweat a fair amount. Especially this time of year as a Chicagoan transplant, in hot Southern California temps.

So yeah, the glove comes off.

Same same. I have some sort of weird mental block looking down at a hybrid or fairway wood. If I'm not taking driver, I'm usually teeing off with a 5i. I just trust looking down at an iron more than a hybrid or fairway.

For my clubs (unrelated odd quirk here, I play single length lol), they don't make a 4i. So my 20* loft club is a 4h. I seriously wish it was a 4i instead. I hit that 4h VERY rarely.
