Who Has Switched To LHL And Stuck With It

Just curious how many people have switched to left hand low and haven’t looked back since. I’ve experimented with it here and there but I think it might be time to stick with it.

My personal experience- I can putt with just about anything LHL. It’s probably the only way I feel confident putting with a blade. The two big stand out things I’ve noticed are that I hit the center of the face more often and hit my line more often. And of course those two things are pretty much all that matter in putting lol

I did, 15 years ago.

Crazy yips putting righty, then I was palying with a hockey buddy who putted lefty. He said, "Try lefty, you play hockey lefty." 1st put I sank a 30 footer. Immediately went to the store and bought a used lefty. A year later I bought a used Plop so I could do fringe and crazy breaks righty. The last 5 years I've been exclusivly lefty, I had a Odyssey blade but for the last 2 years I've used a Del Mar. The guy I played with yesterday called me "deadly" and was going to try lefty.

I'm not deadly but I can have good days. I'm never going back to righty.

I switched probably 6 months ago and can’t imagine going back. I’ve never been a bad putter or anything but have always struggled with tension in my hands. I was at the practice area one night and my sister called for something important, while I was listening to her I was rolling putts right handed and it felt really natural so I started experimenting and I have been putting better than ever this season. I didn’t really have a huge transition period or anything, it just kind of clicked and I feel a lot more fluid with my stroke.

I tried lefty because I’m left eye dominant and RH. I couldn’t get used to looking at the hole from the other side- I switched back to righty but kept the grip. I can’t swing a putter and hit the sweet spot with a standard grip anymore- it feels sooo awkward.
BTW: I seem to have fixed my left eye dominant issue by not using an alignment line on the ball and having a putter with minimal distractions- just a simple alignment line. I just pick a spot a foot ahead of my ball.
But back to left hand low: the thing I like the most about it is that my dominant hand is at the top of the putter, which helps me with feel; my left provides the stability.

I switched to LHL wrist lock about 3 years ago, but now using more traditional LHL with a Lab Link and really liking it.  I really try to think about initiating the backswing with the left hand which keeps my line much better.

Question for LHL putters....does your wrist of the left hand touch the fingers of the right hand or do you keep space between them when you grip?

I also switched around 15 years ago. I'm trying to remember what pro was doing it back then because obviously he was an influence on a lot of us it appears. I'm predominant righty, but I play billiards and hockey left-handed. LHL just felt more comfortable to me the first time I tried it.

That said, I suck at putting, so LHL and a center-shafted putter are probably the absolute worst things for me.

About 20 years ago when I lived in Michigan, I decided to work on it over the winter and commit to it.  I practice constantly on my basement putting mat.  That next spring, I took a trip to Pinehurst and went with my LHL, and I was terrible at it, gave up on it before the trip was over.

Fast forward about 15 years, I started playing with a guy who putted LHL and he was very good, then I started to get really shaky on short putts, decided to give it a go again and got some tips from him.  This time, I stuck with it.   It took awhile to really feel consistently comfortable, I mean, like a year then it was second nature.   I will say this spring I was unhappy with my lag putting and started goofing around with traditional style, and it did feel good.  But then on short putts, I remembered why I switched, I almost had the yips from close range when I tried traditional style.....and figured out why I was having trouble with long putts LHL (wasn't keeping left wrist firm on lags).

I am firmly back in the LHL camp.......   What  I figured out for my stroke is that the left hand is the "brace", and my stroke is really felt with my right.  When I first tried it years ago it was all left side driven, which just didn't work for me.......

Tried it for a season but ended up bailing, probably not enough practice. Felt great for stuff like 20 feet and in and putts that were relatively straight. Had a hard time with lag putting and stuff where I had to aim outside the hole.

For those that stuck with it, what size grip do you use? I prefer something along the 1.0 SS size with a taper, but I had more success LHL with bigger grips like 2.0 plus.

I made the switch on and off for about 3 years and then committed full time the last two years. The main thing that stood out was my ability to get the ball started on my intended line. I found through practice and using a line on the ball, more often than not I would get an end over end roll. With that locked in, all I have to focus on is speed and I get instant feedback on if my green reading was right or wrong. I have had my best rounds lead hand low for sure and it takes time and I think success in pressure moments to truly know it will stick.

Same for me, maybe 20 years ago.  for the question above on grip size, I'm presently using a super stroke tour 3.0   have used that size for 5 or 6 years.  Just works for me

Switched to Lead Hand Low about two years ago and have used it since then. It immediately felt better on short and mid length putts, but there was a learning curve on longer putts. That has been improved and I now struggle to putt with a conventional grip. Also, when switching, moved into more counterbalanced putters like StrokeLab or lengthening with a longer heavier grip and it feels like the putting stroke is much smoother now with the LHL grip.

I started left hand low, but for a bit of a different reason, I switched after a broken left wrist from a high school hockey injury.  I spent months practicing putting in a cast and the only way I could comfortably hold a putter was left hand low.  After the cast came off it was far too uncomfortable to go back to a normal grip.  That was about 18 years ago and I haven't even tried to go back since.

I have been LHL for 3 years. I sometimes dabble with a claw grip on the practice green but LHL is the most natural. Took a while to get used to distance control.

I recently just switched to right hand low (I'm a lefty) while rolling putts in my basement this winter. I was a fairly handsy putter with a conventional grip and was looking for more consistency and less hand flipping. So far it's been a great and needed change for me. I don't see myself ever going back to a conventional putting grip.
