Have you got an entire set of "backup" clubs?

I have a few " back-up" sets, i like golf clubs and i like a variety of golf clubs.

I like to experiment with different things and one set would not allow me to do that, and you can't get enough feedback on a set of clubs by just demo-ing them, so i buy a few different clubs to take out and try.

I do also keep some sets, that i find "easier" to play, so when my swing is not just so, i can grab a set of those to use and make my day a little less stressfull.

Bit of an understatement there JHR, I have seen the pics, you have an Aladdin's Cave of golf equipment. I guess if you've got the Doh, Ray, Me, why not have the Fa, So, La & Tee.

I have several reasons for having a full backup set. It is insurance against having my main set stolen, lost or destroyed. It is also the set that I practice with much of the time (I often practice at a range near my house, while my clubs are stored in the bag room at my club). I will also use clubs from my backup set any time I want to work on one of my gamers (new shaft, new grips, reweighting, etc.). Finally, my backup bag serves as my "minor leagues." New clubs will come into my backup bag, get a tryout and either replace a stick in one of my bags, or be sold. Any club that is knocked out of my main bag goes into my backup bag. Any club that gets knocked out of my backup bag gets sold.

I have a second full set of clubs, as well as some individual clubs for various purposes:

1. In case my Main bag gets stolen

2. In case clubs in my main bag need repair work

3. For guests that visit and want to play but don't have their clubs with them

4. In case my main bag is locked up at my club when I need to leave for a round on the road (brain fade)

5. As a way station for clubs/shafts I want to try.

6. Traveling. I always travel with my lesser quality/older clubs

7. Range time. Sometimes when I'm doing very repetitive drills, I'll use my backup/older clubs.

8. Rotational purposes - I rotate certain clubs depending on course layouts or wind conditions

9. Bad Mojo - Sometimes a club behaves badly, and needs to sit for a while!

10. Weather/course conditions. Some irons with sharp leading edges will dig , Rifle 5.5when the course conditions are soft or wet. An alternate "bad weather" set with more bounce or a more rounded leading edge will perform better. In addition - a cast set of clubs won't rust as a forged set will.

At this time - the only clubs I don't have backups for are my fairway woods. Otherwise, I carry a backup Driver, Irons, Wedges, and Putters. My intention is to also pickup a 4Wood as another backup/alternate club.

UPDATE: I recently got a wild hair, and elected to purchase some more individual irons to (almost) complete a 3rd set. I had a Tourstage Z101 -5 and -8 iron lying around, and found a J33 Combo -4, -5, -6, -7, -9, and PW from clubfinders.com here in Plano TX. I couldn't resist buying them, so now I've got.....

* Gamer main playing set (Tourstage Z101 3-PW)

* Backup set (Bridgestone J33 Combos 3-PW, I couldn't resist a great deal on a NEW set for $299)

* Frankenstein set (Z101 -5, -8, and J33 Combo -4, -5, -6, -7, -9, and PW)

* Backup Driver

* 2 Backup/rotational putters

* Backup pair of wedges (56/60)

(sigh)

Back-up set? No

Extra set(s)? Yes

Currently it's at 27 "extra sets", but I'm sick! SICK I tell you! (Or my girlfriend would tell you!)

40 various woods, 49 various wedges, 78 various putters, and 33 various bags. Alot of my stuff gets loaned out to friends also - nothing I have is rare or anything so I don't have anything that I refuse to use or hangs on the wall really.

I have an equipment fetish I guess...I love golf stuff. My father has been in the industry for 30-plus years, and I started working for him when I was 11 or 12 years old.

If I wasn't lucky enough to be in the golf industry, I wouldn't have them, but I am so I do. And I haven't paid for everything I have - some were given to me from friends, customers, reps, etc. Some I've traded for with cameras, hockey gear, club repairs, etc. and I keep it all, rarely selling any of it off.

I look at it like collecting something - some people collect stamps, model trains, etc. - this is just my hobby!

This is the set I usually play with (I'll take out certain clubs depending on the course):

My back-up set is actually being played by my father. I loaned them to him a year or two ago while hewas learning and haven't seen them back since.

Actually I do borrow, yes borrow my own clubs!, for loaners to other people. My fathers bag is also where my old drivers go to die. Well it wasn't planned like that, but I loaned him my 983K while I was playing my 540Xd and when I took back the 983 for a round while the 540 was getting regripped I found that my father was fond of hitting off the top of the dirver! Doh!

I only have 1 set of clubs, but have access to other sets if I needed them for friends/relatives that are from out of town or if mine are in need of repair/maintenance.

If I get something new, I hold onto the old club for awhile until I know for sure I want to keep the new club. Once I decide to keep the new club, I sell or give someone else the old club. I do not like having the clutter lying around or keeping something I will probably never use again.

Almost like the "clean sweep" of golfing. I used to keep everything and it just took up space and collected dust. This applied to everything, not just golf. During the last move, I realized that I had too much "high quality" junk lying around that I never used just because I did not want to get rid of it. Old (but great) speakers, stereo equipment, computer equipment, etc. I am a reformed pack rat. If I am not using something anymore, I sell it, give it away or trash the really old/broken (but not if it is a collectible or valuable).

No back-up irons because I try to commit fully to the set I'm using but I have hung on to a few older drivers that I enjoyed. I really would like to own a set of of Titleist 695CB's, Mizuno MP-60/32's or B-stone J33CB's, being a double digit hndcp I would almost certainly retain my MX-23's in case those player's clubs were too much for me to handle.

i definitely do !!!

i have 4 sets of MR23 CBs in mint condition, in addition to my gamer, 2 sets of the MR23 blades, and a few other sets of blades such as 695 and macgregor DW grinds...then i have my mid size blades and irons, such as my MP32s, MP60s, and Xtours, and then i have my super forgiving tourstage Viq forged for when all hell breaks loose !!!!! ive got tons of drivers, fw, woods, but surprisingly only 1 type of wedges and 2 putters and one of those i dont use......

I need one!

I need one set at my parents home (where I spend my holidays) and one set at my place (where I study). Its rather annoying to carry the bag home each time I have a tournament at home course (I have to travel by train + the people in the train are looking at me like I am carrying guns or something).

Another reason is that I would like to have a set custom fit (and all clubs with the same flex).

i don't have a backup set, but i do have many extras:

drivers: 3

3 woods: 4 (14*-15*)

hybrids: 3 (18*-19*)

irons: 1 set - 2-pw

wedges: 52*, 53*, 54*, 58*, 58*, 60*, 60* - two different sets, various lofts and bounces

putters: 6

all my extras were from tyring different things. i've sold everything that didn't work out. i will be adding a new set of irons (possibly later this year - nike pro combo tour after the new nike's come out???). i will say that my hoing comes from used clubs and ebay and i only go after good deals so its not a huge financial burden.

Yes I have a backup set and a few spare wedges. My backup clubs are used to rotate based on the course I am playing. I also use the backup bag for the clubs that get knocked out of the main bag but are still good enough to keep. These are mostly woods and wedges.

Only have 2 full sets of irons.

Biggest reason for 2 full bags, other than club rotation, is that I use one for guests. Living in Florida seems to be an invitation for a lot of visitors.

Just Iron Sets really,

I have a 983K and 975J but would part with them easily - ill never use them again

I just don't see the benefit of getting $50 for selling my beat up 990s when one day I might want to go back

I also picked up a used set of 300s so I will hold on to them

I recently bought LT2s and am giving my 704s to my brother

I have old and worn wedges but not a single rotational club

I take the money that these people spend on all these clubs, and put it towards greens fees. If I lose or damage a club, I would then buy another one. I have a good game and one set of clubs is all I require. That being said, I understand that some people like many different clubs/sets. I'm that way with clothes/shoes! :)

I am playing some rather retro stuff right now.. I am amazed how good those guys were back in the 60's... And people claim that 990's were hard to hit. LOL :)

My 'backup' set are the irons my dad had bragged about and I got when he passed away plus some extra woods I've bought. I'll never get rid of the irons, but I might get rid of some of the woods and drivers I've accumulated. I always played what dad handed down to me and never got rid of anything. Gave a set to a buddy who was just starting the game. Finally bought my own set and put the hand-me-downs away (except for the old PTs -- they are still my gamers).

Sorry to thread-jack, but where do you guys keep all this stuff??

My wife and I golf, and two bags in the house seem like enough...

I do have a really cheap back up set of irons (5-PW...Cally clones)...really a 1/2 set I guess. One extra driver that won't really work with my game right now...it's 12 degrees on a regular shaft, and one B-60 (I think) Ping putter.

Yes I have back up set(s), but I don't really need them - as I always play my competition golf with one set (of irons - driver, wedges and putter are not necessarily set). In fact they're not really back up sets, as they never see the heat of battle so to speak - mainly used in social or bounce golf. I enjoy buying golf clubs and rotating (mainly) iron sets when my handicap isn't on the line. Call it mad or sad but you have to spend your money on something, you can't take it with you. Some will argue its wasteful, but I do not let it get out of hand. I spend money responsibly in terms of making a wider community impact (charitable giving) in other ways. Its certainly better than wasting it on alcohol or betting. There, I've made myself feel better about buying too many golf clubs - would be nice to get my car in the garage though!
